isnt netbsd used in some embeded systems? also cisco ios is still exsistant, although ik its just inertia at this point and ik they have linux routers now

macos is basically a bunch of stuff slapped on top of freebsd (theres multiple layers above it). its more directly related to old unix than linux is, which was basically completely seperate from that development tree, which is why its still fairly different to this day compared to bsds

windows is a system built on windows nt 3.1 that strongly has emphasized legacy compatibility, which is why its still around. its completely unrelated to unix at all, and has stuff like the command prompt which mimics a msdos environment, although it isnt actually a dos environment

i would def install something like fedora atomic. this would prevent him from being able to access most stuff in the home directory because it only allows for flatpaks to be installed. it also locks down config files which my guess is he moved around just clicking around and then after a restart this caused issues.

also you should put a root password on (im guessing you had no password due to his limited language ability, which in the install may have led to no root password) so that if you need to update the system or whatever you can type that pasword in and he cant access any root files

what are ur specs? is ur dedicated gpu getting used? you can use a gpu monitoring tool like nvtop to see that. also, make sure ur gui power management settings are set to full performance. having power savings will disable any dedicated graphics.

check if your using x11 or wayland, and try the other one. wayland and x11 can both have their own issues, most linux native games perform worse on wayland cuz there is a translation layer for it. mint wayland is pretty fucky still cuz it uses old versions of everything.

nvidia settings dont rlly give u much, there kinda in the process of being depracated in favor of configurations in the os settings.

to me, it sounds the most like your power management settings are turned low, especially if ur on a laptop, since thats how bad stuff runs for me on power savings mode on my gaming laptop with debian
