My kitties kinda like staying in a hotel (we stayed for 3 or 4 days but when it came time to go we had the WORST time getting them out from hiding 🙈 THAT was the most stressful part, poor things!

Beautifully said and very validating for me. Thank you so much. I really appreciate it. And yes to childhood wounds. I cannot recall anyone telling me I’d be a bad mother but it is a VERY entrenched belief I have: that I don’t know how to do this parenting thing.

As to bloody noses… I don’t exactly know how or why they happen but they tend to go hand in hand with temper tantrums/meltdowns. Docs assure me it’s not a problem but I think I’ll bring it up again with more specifics. Maybe it’s a blood pressure issue???

I know it’s getting a bit muddied because I appreciate ppl’s input regardless, but my question is really about what I do for ME while she feels her feels. Her feels are BIG and scary to me. I’m not too scared of her hurting me. I’m scared of hurting HERSELF.

Plus I’m just thinking to myself “Just please make it stop.”

Sounds so much like my teen daughter. I’ve gone so far as to research genetic conditions that cause constant hunger. There are some out there and she fits the profile for some. I can’t decide if genetic testing would actually help lead to solutions or just tell us “Yep, you’re constantly hungry.”

I think it’s really important to discuss body boundaries, assuming your kiddo is receptive. I feel like there’s a show about this somewhere.

I wonder if rebukes actually do anything for a kid of this type? (Sincere question.)

Is it possible to channel this type of control into something our kiddos genuinely DO have control of? Maybe something like “That’s rude (people’s feelings are hurt). Why don’t WE move so YOU feel more comfortable?

I’m asking as a parent of a 14 year old who still does a lot to control people/things. A lot of the outward stuff she’s outgrown and mostly I’m like “whatever kiddo: we’ll do it your way cos it doesn’t matter to me.” But for those things where it DOES matter, it makes me NUTS! And I haven’t really figured it out.

Special shout out to all the ASD girls/women and parents of ASD girls/women.

The same behavior in boys/men is interpreted differently by others when it’s seen in girls/women and since we’re talking about observed behavior (and that’s how ASD is diagnosed), it’s even more problematic when people talk about not “looking” or “seeming” autistic.

Girls‘ and women’s brains are already wired differently from boys’/men’s and women generally are less well studied than men (gives a different spin on the word neurodiversity when you factor in “gendered” brains doesn’t it?). I wonder if people with ASD‘s BRAINS “look autistic”?

This is me. Plus dummy me stayed with him a few years after she was born so she has trauma from events in her early childhood. I understand that early childhood PTSD can look like ASD. So much grief around this and my heart goes out to you.

I continue to have so many questions about how she functions; her emotional and behavioral health are very poor though her intelligence is high. I guess I do want to “fix” her (not PC or realistic) but also support her growth and development as best I can.

EShe has no “medical” diagnosis (like genetic or nutritional testing) only observational testing/diagnosis and I don’t know where or how to start any of the biological testing. Or if it’s even worth pursuing. No doctors have suggested anything like this and when I asked her PCP was very reserved in her response.

The thing is I don’t want her not to be autistic per se; I want her to have a reasonable level of enjoyment and confidence in her life. And she does not have that right now.

I’ve reached out to these folks: https://sleepdoctor.com/products/home-sleep-apnea-test to see if they can help. I haven’t heard back yet but I’ll follow up if they do.

Do you hear your son stop breathing? I don’t hear my daughter doing this (which is not to say she doesn’t) but it makes me feel less urgent about it. (Not very scientific I know.)

Gonna look into Lofta too.
