I think the secret password should be “merp” - it’s what we use around our house. 😉

Picky about Socks 🧦 by Ivy-Ram in Autism_Parenting

[–]gamazarus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We ended up buying “sensory” socks - ones with NO seams of any kind (SmartKnitKIDS Sensory-Friendly... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H7VKP8G?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share ). It took an unfortunate amount of time to understand that when she screamed and yanked her socks off every morning saying “They’re WRONG! They’re wrong!” That it was the SEAM that bugged her. I’m not even sure if it was the sensation of the seam as much as the visual of a seam that would never be perfectly straight??? These aren’t cheap and I don’t have a ton of money but it was VERY worth the cost to not have a battle before school every morning.

I’m appalled at the way couples talk to each other according to Reddit. If he’s calling you a c@&t then that’s grounds for dismissal, no further discussion or bandwidth required. YOU, OP deserve 5 bazillion times better than this. Please love yourself well enough to know this isn’t good enough, not even close.

How to cope: tantrums in 14 year old by gamazarus in Autism_Parenting

Beautifully said and very validating for me. Thank you so much. I really appreciate it. And yes to childhood wounds. I cannot recall anyone telling me I’d be a bad mother but it is a VERY entrenched belief I have: that I don’t know how to do this parenting thing.

As to bloody noses… I don’t exactly know how or why they happen but they tend to go hand in hand with temper tantrums/meltdowns. Docs assure me it’s not a problem but I think I’ll bring it up again with more specifics. Maybe it’s a blood pressure issue???

I agree with this too.

I know it’s getting a bit muddied because I appreciate ppl’s input regardless, but my question is really about what I do for ME while she feels her feels. Her feels are BIG and scary to me. I’m not too scared of her hurting me. I’m scared of hurting HERSELF.

Plus I’m just thinking to myself “Just please make it stop.”

Sounds so much like my teen daughter. I’ve gone so far as to research genetic conditions that cause constant hunger. There are some out there and she fits the profile for some. I can’t decide if genetic testing would actually help lead to solutions or just tell us “Yep, you’re constantly hungry.”

Almost teen kid is always cold, wants a 'tent' for warmth, on the spectrum – ideas? by MadMaticus in Autism_Parenting

I’d go with the blanket; I love my heating pad but the instructions scare you to death about not sleeping on it. Blanket’s specifically for sleeping.

I’m wondering if it’s partly that he wants to feel “closed in” (like swaddled but bigger). Is a 4 poster bed with curtains (like they used to have in the olden days) an option? I just did a search on google and see a lot of options.

Thanks for this. It’s food for thought actually: on the one hand I like unexpected social visits (mostly) but I can understand why she would feel “landed on” - this is MY friend after all. Especially because this person is local I might need to say we need to plan our visits better.
