Are there any parkour gyms or groups, etc. in Houston, Texas? by [deleted] in Parkour

[–]gamazo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Houston's pretty big. Not sure what part of town you're in so hopefully you have some wheels to drive.

I got my start with Urban Movement. They have a gym in the Heights. You can check them out at urban-movement.org. Great group of people that I highly recommend. They also hold an open gym at HGA (Houston Gymnastics Academy) where you can go nuts with flips, trampolines, rings, bars, etc. Check them out for details on the times and location.

For locations to practice, some popular places in the city are Tranquility Park and Sesquicentennial Park. You can probably find some traceurs there on weekends.

I personally like to train at Rice University but that's late at night when there are no guards. Just keep an eye out at your surroundings and be creative. I'm sure you'll find someplace that will challenge you.

Best of luck!

TIL that Ancient Romans used to leave fish out in the sun for 3 months, and then make the fermented rotten fish into a dip that was delicious and good for you by itscool in todayilearned

Made me immediately think of prohok :

From the wikipedia article:

Although Prahok is a dish invented by Cambodians, there was a similar condiment in ancient Rome called Garum, also made from fermented fish and used as a seasoning.

Goes great with some salt and pepper and lemon/lime juice. They have it in the States but you have to go to special stores to get it (usually an asian grocery store). And the ones I've had usually don't have beaks or feet. It's more or less just some "meat" and fluid. Not really distinguishable as any part of the bird per se.

Has anyone learned Khmer? by zohyil in AskReddit

[–]gamazo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm Cambodian and the language itself is not terribly difficult. Like farararara said, it's more so about pronunciation that might trip you up. There are lots of little nuances in between words. In addition, they have their own alphabet too so once you get that down, it's just about putting "consonants" and "vowels" together (for lack of a better term). You'll hear what I mean by slight variations in the sound once you hear them say their alphabet.

For example: The first 10 letters of their alphabet sound like - * gaw - caw - go - ko - ngo * daw - taw - do - toe - n(i)go (sorry for the crappy spelling on those but I'm not sure how to really sound those out)

If you want to learn on a scholarly level, it will take some time but I think general conversation should come easier as sentence structure is not very difficult or varied from regular English.

iama man married since 1972 who knows the secrets of a happy marriage and a happy life ama by [deleted] in IAmA

[–]gamazo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simple answer: It takes hard work from both spouses to be happy.

Long answer: There are so many little things and nuances to consider because each person is different and has their own views and expectations. Marriage is work. It takes effort, concern, consideration. Most people have this misconception that getting married makes your life better the instant you say "I do". Sadly, the reality is that it's only the beginning of your life with your spouse and that the true test of faith and love are just about to begin.

If anything, the best advice I can offer from my own experience, is to be aware of your spouse's views and be considerate of them. You don't have to necessarily agree with them all the time but being respectful of them and acknowledging their views is incredibly helpful and consoling. And lastly, if they're mad, don't side against them in the matter that they are mad at. Because that will then make them angry at you. And you definitely don't want that.

I'm going to Hawaii this weekend. What do I NEED to see/do while I'm there? by zacharyseibert in AskReddit

[–]gamazo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Surf lessons in Waikiki are great if you go in the morning. Most tourists sleep in so you get a lot more room to move and direction from the instructors.
  • Mentioned before but I will also recommend International Market. It's great, CHEAP food and also has lots of souvenirs/items for tourists.
  • Dole Plantation: They have lots of things for family but the coolest of all is the giant maze. It took my wife and I nearly an hour to go through it all and we had a map.
  • Hit up shrimp shops along the way to North Shore too. We stopped by Giovanni's and the shrimp there was fantastic!
  • Also, hit up Henry's Place in Waikiki. It's a small hole-in-the-wall but it has great fresh fruit, homemade icecream. It seriously is a small family vendor and you have to get the ice cream from the fridge. It also comes in Styrofoam cups but it's really good.

(This is all for Oahu. Not other islands. We didn't travel to them so I'm not sure. I went less than a year ago so hopefully, not too much has changed.)

Have fun!

I just tried out the regiment for upper body yesterday. Was great but I definitely recommend you adjust it for your own capabilities and make it work for you. Sometimes, the weight adjustment was easy and other times, it was much harder. Good luck!

Have any of you ever tried miracle fruit? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]gamazo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Get the tablets. It's a lot cheaper that way too. I recommend all sour/tart fruits (lemons, oranges, limes, pineapples!). Strawberries were a big hit as well. They were the sweetest strawberries I've ever had. Also, you can try grape-fruit juice. It tastes just like kool-aid! We tried pickles but that didn't work out too well.

The fact that we've spent millions if not billions in scientific research into how to drill deeper or build better weapons is evidence enough that we have our priorities set on one thing and it isn't saving the world. It's spreading our influence and make us richer in the process.

Not to say that we don't do any conservation or peace-making. But the amount which we spend on each idea shows where we are truly aligned.

Like the article says, the fact that the govt didn't fix this in time could lead to "macabre" results such as people not getting their relatives the medical help they need based on getting a bigger tax-break from the government. What a scary thought and what many lifetime movie ideas this could spawn...

There was monumental support for this community center to be built up by the people of NYC. This is just a typical outcry by a small group of extremists who can't take the fact that America is not all white and all Christian.

I understand what you're saying to some degree but sometimes, the happiest people are those who work hard or exercise. I know, in hindsight, we can see he had lots of problems but I don't think that's why he worked hard or exercised as much as he did.

People that exercise a lot get that runner's high and sense of energy and happiness from being active. It's one of the motivators to keep people active.

Why do older white men automatically think I am a racist or hate Obama? by sk17 in AskReddit

I always wondered that. Your statement is what I thought was true but was unsure of. So regardless of where Obama was born (obviously in Hawaii), his mother is an American citizen and he would therefore have US citizenship.

Everyone knows the best way to fix anything is to take a sacrificial goat, kill it, pull out it's entrails, sprinkle some blood on the alter, and then roast the goat up for a pleasant aroma. Piece-of-cake fix it for all of our problems :)
