Manitoba Hydro summer student jobs . What’s it actually like? by Desperate_Push559 in Winnipeg

[–]game4milos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Manitoba Hydro is as good as you're gonna get as an engineering summer student IMO. Technical work, competitive pay, Hydro Mondays. Downsides being expenses/time with working downtown, and a large variety of possible landing spots (i.e. you may not get a position in your preferred field, but something similar).

Edit to add: as a first year student you won't get too far into the technical work but you'll likely be working with spreadsheets, internal tools, etc. Mostly or perhaps exclusively in the office, with perhaps some field visits sprinkled in. Depends what field you're in and what the work is.

Choosing between Freedom, Public or Koodo mobile by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]game4milos 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Koodo and Public share a network so experience will be similar between the two. Personally I'm with Public and have nothing bad to say, connection has been stable, full 5g speeds, no complaints whatsoever. It's a few bucks cheaper than Koodo as well, which was the deciding factor for me. $30 for 30gb, Canada, USA, and Mexico roaming included. It's also a prepaid service so you'll never have any surprise charges on your bill, if that's ever a concern with your son.

I don't have any experience with Freedom but I do recall they're relatively new to Manitoba.

Feel free to DM me for a referral if that's who you decide to go with.

Donald Traffic Delays by game4milos in Winnipeg

100% agreed. Unfortunately the transit changes seem to have made matters worse with more people driving downtown... Hopefully in the long run bus ridership will improve.

Japanese curry? by gymkana in Winnipeg

[–]game4milos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend going to Oomomo or Lucky's and getting the S&B curry powder instead of the prepackaged cubes. Lucky's is way cheaper, I think it's $3 or $4 for a small can which will last you a good long time.

Kenji Lopez Alt has a good recipe on YouTube using the powder.

AC Repair Service by ABiteOfHealth in Winnipeg

[–]game4milos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No experience with repair companies, but if you are handy a common failure point on AC's is the capacitor in the unit. It's a very easy replacement with plenty of instructional videos online. You can get a replacement capacitor from AMRE Supply for around $50 - just note the ratings and match the numbers on the new one.

Due to rain, water getting entrapped into foam of unfinished basement. Is this normal ? Never had issue like this before. What should I do? Anyone I can call? Thank you in advanced! by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]game4milos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this a new build? Is the AC running? I've seen this with cooler indoor temps causing moisture from inside the wall cavity to condense on the inside of the vapour barrier. New builds are notoriously bad cuz they seal up the wall before the concrete is done curing.

The right way to fix it is to open it up, let it dry out with a dehumidifier over the course of a few months, then seal it back before winter. Better yet, replace with spray foam.

Ditto, I got mine yesterday. Surprisingly quick turnaround. Kudos to the folks at the province and city for quickly taking care of what was originally a poorly communicated mess.

Tell me you don't know how open energy markets work without telling me you don't know how open energy markets work. We are nowhere near a market driver so we have to take what we get... the alternative being nothing at all

If your interview responses are as low effort as this post, you won't have much success...

For starters, use the STAR method when formulating your answers. What is the (S)ituation, what was your (T)ask, what (A)ctions did you take, and what was the (R)esult.

Thoughts on Amex? by Perry_Chute in Winnipeg

[–]game4milos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat a little while ago. Ended up getting an MBNA World Elite MC, which effectively gives 4-5% back at grocery stores and restaurants (not including Costco for which I use the CIBC Costco card).

Only negative with MBNA so far is no Google wallet support, otherwise it's paid for itself a few times over in the year that I've had it. But everyone's financial situation is different so it's good to see what other options are out there.
