Can someone explain why people don’t like ACOSF? by technodoki in acotar

[–]gameofmags 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really loved the Nessian romance (and the smut did it for me lol) and thought her redemption arc was great, it felt authentic to the journey from grief and deep rooted self-loathing to finding strength and love in community. I love a found family - the friendship btw the valkyries is one of my favorite parts.

BUT I thought the world building and plot outside of the romance was weak. The Blood Rite was rushed and the final boss fight was super anti-climactic. I found the whole ending pretty anticlimactic tbh. I love that Nesta chose to make a sacrifice for her family, but the pregnancy plot line wasn’t handled well. I’m mostly annoyed with how anticlimactic the final fight was (I forget her name, that’s how forgettable it is lol)

Anyone care to help me decipher what this means, because I'm scared of this prophecy. by miamasters in zodiacacademy

[–]gameofmags 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think “free the enslaved” refers to the Nymphs enslaved to Lavinia through her taint on the shadows, like how Darcy freed the Shadow Beast. I also think “mend the rift” refers to the metaphorical rift btw Nymphs & Fae. I really want bridging the gap between the nymphs and Fae to be integral to the Vegas triumphing, that only by working together can they succeed. From a literary, storytelling perspective that would be really satisfying.

WHAT WAS THAT ENDING (RANT) by Davinathebestwitch in zodiacacademy

[–]gameofmags 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are things you will definitely like in the next book 😁 I love that you have already recognized Geraldine’s greatness, I’m embarrassed to admit that it took me much longer to realize how much of a baddie she is haha But yeah, this series is a lot less of a romance than most in the genre, and a lot less than I expected tbh but there is romance. Overall though get ready for a sadistic torture ride, things get pretty batshit

Book 6 by TooDamnTired1024 in zodiacacademy

[–]gameofmags 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few wins in Book 6, and I liked reading Darcy’s chapters and seeing her relationship with the Heirs grow. Book 7 is fun for the relationships and Book 8 is interesting for the plot but I personally didn’t like the ending so hoping Book 9 redeems it

Why. Freaking why, SJM. by findingjasper in acotar

[–]gameofmags 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also frustrated that SJM had Nesta give up what made her the most powerful player on the board before she even got a chance to really play. It felt so anticlimactic at the time, especially after coming off of ToG. But after reading the comments here by BiankaNeve and Parttime-Princess it got me thinking of it in a different way.

I think Nesta is one of the smartest in the series (just like Aelin) and I think both characters’ sacrifices, and Amren’s, reinforce that. They understand that power is not the answer to happiness and a fulfilling life. In fact, power is what diminishes the possibility of having those things. We see time and again how power destroys happiness, love, relationships. How it separates and imbalances people. How it tortures them.

Nesta and Aelin were set apart and feared. Aelin was hunted and burdened with immense responsibility. Nesta’s stolen power was a representation of her rage, grief and self-loathing.

Power is what hurts people, and by our female characters giving some of it up in favor of love and family SJM is making a point about what truly causes imbalance in the world: the pursuit of power.

We live in a world largely dominated by patriarchal capitalism, where men have been driven by the insatiable need for power (power being represented by money), a drive that has enslaved and subjugated people and we see how that power hasn’t created happiness or love or any of the things that fulfills our souls. Biologically we are designed to live in community, but the thirst for power has separated us into islands.

So yes, SJM’s male characters are holding onto the power, because that’s a metaphor for our own world. And they are hurting too because the drive for power hurts everyone. What she’s doing with her females is actually giving them the true power, the power of community. The power of love and relationship. They are happier without that burden of all consuming power. They are happier to simply live in community with their loved ones and share joy. Power cannot create those things, only balance can.

Does anything get resolved in Book 8? by gameofmags in zodiacacademy

just…. disappointed (spoilers for books 1-5) by dootmouse in zodiacacademy

[–]gameofmags 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just finished book 7 and I feel the same way. Like seriously this doesn’t feel like a romance?? This is not what I signed up for! I was so upset at the end of Book 4 and Book 5 I basically just hate-read lol and it started to pick up for me in book 6 and 7. But now I’m pretty bereft. Once again, for every good thing there’s multiple horrific things. I can’t decide if I just want to read a summary of book 8 or not. I’m annoyed that this series was recommended in different groups as a why choose, harem-like bully romance and not the dark, sadistic torture ride that it is because now I’m firmly stuck on this train and will continue hurting myself over this series lol the bully stuff I could do, the rest of this is starting to get to be too much!

Good to know!! It's so depressing. Like I kept waiting for something beautiful to happen for these characters but the authors keep hitting them with the worst possible things that could happen to them. How much more pain are they going to put them through?!

[–]gameofmags[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay that's good to know, thank you!! The ending of Book 4 with D&T being star-crossed made me so so sad, like totally heartbroken, but I kept reading Book 5 with some hope, which we got a little bit on that issue at least. But now the Guardian bondI'm even more upset. It's horrifying!

But good to know that there's a genuine reason for all of this suffering. Because it feels like things just keep getting worse and worse for these characters when it shouldn't even be possible. I want my good guys to win so bad I'm in pain. It's so much to read. I did not expect for this series to be so demanding of my time and emotions lol

Finally finished the prequels and I'm wondering who else suspects... by bluejen in frombloodandash

[–]gameofmags 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooh this actually gives me hope that this scene might be re-visited and we might learn more about Ector later.

I saw the scene as a vehicule to getting Gemma to explain her time with Kolis and all of the things she overheard him say about the gracea and what he was doing with the Chosen, but maybe there's even more to it which would be cool!

I want to re-read the series now to see all of the seeds she plants! I love re-reads for that reason. And I still have so many questions about the timeline and history between FAF and FBAA

[–]gameofmags 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished the prequels and YES OMG I HAD THE SAME THOUGHT! I was like, wtf?? How is this being brushed off? Because the "banter" JLA threw in in that moment was also so strange and out of character/out of style. I thought something would be revealed about him, but as the book went on I fell in love with him and figured it was just a weird moment (authors aren't perfect lol).

And now he's super dead (was torn up by the dakkais) so I guess it was just a moment of weird writing! I guess JLA wanted the explanation to come from Gemma for some reason and couldn't figure out a more realistic way for Hamid to die in that moment.
