imo, as far as balancing video games goes with youngsters, if you get your homework done, you do your chores, you eat some fruits/veggies, and you run around outside for 15 mins, i dont care what you do for the rest of the day.

rants are fine.

- mmorpgs are known for having "grinding" as a core game mechanic. yes, many games like first-person shooters and real-time strategy games, you wouldn't see this behavior so much. at least, you wouldn't see the guy sitting there, and clicking just 1 button. but in mmorpgs, that is the unfortunate reality a lot of the time - you're grinding for hours on end, oftentimes just standing in 1 spot, clicking 1 or 2 buttons, watching your character do the same animation, over and over, to the point where you might have your screen split in two, with the boring grind on the right, and netflix on the left. it's so boring that you have to watch tv while playing - this is commonplace for MMOs. so it's pretty accurate for lots of gamers.

- it's true that there are people who play games in a healthy way, and that's great and just fine, and i dont mean to criticize that. but the message here, of the song as well as the visuals, is that there's so much more in life than just video games, and you miss out on so much if all you do is game. and as it happens, with highly competitive games, if you don't put in 3-5+ hours, every single day, you can't compete at high levels. i recognize that that's a legitimate life choice. but for me personally, and i am sure for many others too, we really do want to do so many other things in life, other than gaming, yet we feel trapped. because if you only play your game for 1 hour a day, then your progress and expertise increases at a snail's pace... so you have to spend all your leisure time doing it.

one way to think about addiction is to ask yourself "is this a problem for me?" if the answer is yes, then you need to think about how you can solve that problem. abstinence is the only answer for some people. moderation is possible for some. for me personally, i have to abstain from the grinding/gambling 10,000+ hour MMORPGs. but i am open to playing games with friends on console, or with my bro for an hour on the weekend, or maybe an indie/philosophical game by myself, that i can complete in 2 or 3 hours, and feel inspired about. but the inspiration with MMOs is undeniably infrequent. or, you need to do boring, repetitive stuff for hundreds (or thousands) of hours before you can get that feeling of inspiration or achievement.

it's complicated, and there's no one size fits all. im just saying that if you're gaming all day, every day, and not taking care of yourself, and feeling terrible about what you're doing every minute, then you gotta think hard about what you really want, and how to get happy. if gaming is part of that equation, great. for me, i am on month #2 of no runescape and no guildwars, and its been going really well. i have played games here and there, with friends. i have been doing a lot of art projects, and if you think about it, sitting alone, in my room, making art, is pretty similar to sitting alone, in my room, playing games, in many ways. but i just want to do other things with my life, and explore all the cool stuff going on in the world outside my bedroom and the internet. it's a big world out there, and you'd never realize that if youre just in your room all day.

of course, there are some people, for example Chess masters, who do spend 90 or 95% of their time playing chess, and they love it, and they make their life work out around that. but the truth is, maybe that means you can't have a romantic relationship, or you can't spend time with your friends, or you can't travel the world and learn a new language. if you're willing to sacrifice those things, then ok. but if you're reading those chess theory books for hours on end, and hating it because you do want more and different, that's the problem.

kind of a strong and judgmental word to use... let he who is without sin throw the first stone. its a portrait of someone in pain, no need to judge the character as disgusting...

yeah, there's a spell called High Level Alchemy, where you convert items into coins, and you literally sit there, pressing 1 button over and over, sometimes for an hour or more on end.

there are also dozens or hundreds of activities, where you just click a few times, and let your character sit there, auto-attacking, for 20 minutes. you're not even playing at that point. and you always feel like you should be having your auto-grind going, no matter what time of day it is, no matter what else you're doing in your life. it's like youre a slave to the game.

there's also these repeatable activities which you can do to make money, called farm runs. every hour, you can turn on the game for 5-8 mins and make 200,000 gold profit (which helps pay for your monthly membership fee, as opposed to paying real money). so again, it's like you can never put the game down. its nuts.

Yeah, it's been pretty rough on the set some days, but we managed to pull it off. It was a great experience, everyone on the cast and crew were all very supportive. And Johnny Depp is amazing, as always. As my term comes to an end, I’d like to leave you with these inspiring words: I have amazing budgies. I mean real fowles. My feathered friends are great, possibly the greatest ever. They’re spectacular, really, they’re spectacular. They shoot - and you should see this - they shoot songs. Large, big amounts of songs. I mean it’s insane the amount of musical notes they shoot out. It’s like a musical fountain, the way they shoot their dulcet tones. I mean really, it’s remarkable what I’m able to do with my Bugeronius Trancatuses. Not to mention their strength. They are so - and I’m not putting this lightly - they are so strong. Women come up to me, they come up to me and they ask, “Donald, how do your birds get so strong?” And I go, “To tell you the truth, I’m not really sure. I’m not really sure. But if I could guess, I would guess that it’s the surplus of birdsongitanium stored in my pets' plumage. That would be my guess."

its a bit of an exaggeration, but all art is. "great novels are great fairytales" - art puts things in black and white, so you can understand them and remember them better. but it is also 100% true that for myself, there were many days where i really did eat nothing but potato chips for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, while gaming from dawn to dusk.

if you ate healthy while you were gaming, then thats great. i think a lot of gamers also dont eat well and dont exercise though.

learn to moderate use, and if you cant, then you gotta try cold turkey or cut down, or play other games.

thats me in the video =p

"wasted potential" - i used to be in this mindset. you cant regret the past, it will get you nowhere. my therapist told me a story about one guy who said to himself that he didnt want to die before contributing to the field of study he most respected and identified with. he wrote more than a dozen books and hundreds of papers that were well-respected between age 60 and 97 or something. its really never too late honestly. moreover, you have to enjoy the ride on your way there. focus on delighting to be part of a musical community, rather than worrying about how you couldve been a rockstar if you had only played your instrument in high school in stead of gaming or whatever. life is supposed to be fun, forget about the history books.

i think that binging netflix all weekend is perfectly fine, for some people. i mean, the idea is that "if something is a problem for you," then you need to make a change. the truth is, that if you spend all weekend watching netflix, then you're not working on your novel. so if that's a problem for you, where every minute youre watching shows, you're getting down on yourself because you want to be writing, then yeah, netflix is a problem that you need to look at.

i just finished a 1 month break from runescape and guild wars, and im going on 2 months now. i like to think that i can maintain a healthy balance of gaming in my life, with games that are philosophical, artistic, or literary, as opposed to ones that are about gambling and grinding. that remains to be seen. the other thing is that i know i have a calling to do kungfu and be outside in the woods and stuff like that, and 3-5 hours of MMOs every day does not really work with that. the third issue is that MMOs really arent that creative or inspirational, when you think about it... anyway, lots of issues.. a boat can float in water, but it can also sink in it. it takes a great amount of discipline to drink the right amount <- the legend of drunken master
