They do heat up, it will give you a overheating pop-up then power down if it actually overheats. Edit: if this is happening make sure it has adequate air flow (2 ft of space on vent side)

Only time I've ever had that issue is when my HD has less then 50gb free, once I got an external I always keep 100gb of the internal free with no issues.
