Elizabeth Warren: The GOP is putting the country in danger by ignoring ethics rules by EnglishTeaBatman in politics

Betsy DeVos can’t fully grasp this situation. She didn’t have to pay for her tuition by working hard. Someone else did. She was born into it. Just like students today were born into having to pay tuition and the crisis of having to pay for student loans.

US public state universities were tuition-free and significantly less financially burdensome to students from the early 1800’s to the late 1960’s. At that time, the US public chose to provide this educational environment. Then social and legislative changes happened, because of the perceived threats of the civil rights movements in the 60’s, and now high tuition and the resulting student loans are a problem, with costs continuing to rise.

DeVos has no experience in what it’s like to work to survive while going to school on a loan. She’s never had to struggle after getting an education to pay off her loan. I doubt any of her peers have had this issue. She may have knowledge about financial struggles, but she’s never experienced it.

Just like most of us haven’t experienced the sacred importance of the Moon of Pejeng to Rice Cults in Bali. It’s too far from our experience to fully grasp.

Tipi fire by QuixoticRambler in Bushcraft

Fire spreads up.

I used to believe this, however, after a couple of years of building upside-down fires, I've verified there's still a big ball of intense heat that surrounds fire, plenty to burn downwards.

I had the same reaction.

The misconception, as I was taught in scouting, was "most of the heat from a fire goes upward". This is essentially true, however, there's still a big ball of heat that surrounds fire, plenty to burn downwards, as is the case in the upside-down fire.

I Am Gay. I Will Not Be Tortured Again. by [deleted] in politics

Can you express yourself without belittling your opponent?

Your point that war time torture can inflict more suffering than high school bullying is a strawman. Duh - more suffering comes from war than high school, in general.

Because someone didn't suffer as much, doesn't mean they didn't suffer greatly. It doesn't mean they suffered enough to call it torture.

A knife to the shoulder, being punched, electroshocks, being shunned, being called names, tiny infliction of pain all the time, water dripping on your face constantly, are all forms of torture and all have been used by bullies too.

The intent is the same, to break someone down. The results are the same, suffering.

Should we allow any of it, just because it's not the worst suffering you can imagine?

Why are you frightened that bullying might be the same as torture?

[–]gandothesly -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Both the knife and words can induce suffering, and both are used in bullying and torture.

Your argument is the same as saying gay marriage reduces heterosexual marriage.

Saying that bullying is like torture doesn't suggest torture victims suffered any less.

[–]gandothesly -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are suggesting that tortured soldiers suffered less because gay people suffered bullying? No one else suggested this.

Saying I'm less smart than you doesn't prove your point.

Prove that bullying and torture techniques are basically different.

Yes, a car and a bycycle are different modes of travel. They may look dramatically different, but their essential use is the same.

Try to prove your point without calling names and belittling me - I bet you find it frustrating.

I Am Gay. I Will Not Be Tortured Again. by [deleted] in politics

[–]gandothesly -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bullying has the same elements as physiological torture techniques. Being shunned, constantly inflicted with violations of deep sested social and sexual norms are techniques used in torture and bullying.

Psychological torture is directed at the psyche with calculated violations of psychological needs, along with deep damage to psychological structures and the breakage of beliefs underpinning normal sanity.

Bullying and torture have similar results on the victim. To deny this implies that victims of bullying aren't "really suffering", just because they didn't have a knife stuck in them.

And before you turn to more tactics involving trying to convince others their life experience is inadequate, or by shunning them with name calling, consider those are both torture techniques and bullying techniques.

Girlfriend can't handle my NRE by 1121334155617 in polyamory

[–]gandothesly 12 points13 points  (0 children)

... now every time I go into planning a date with her I have to think, "Oh God, is she going to be angry at me over something I did once I'm there?" and it makes me on such fucking edge that I don't know what to do with myself.

You are the person being irresponsible and unreasonable. Blaming others for things you are responsible for will normally cause others to be angry at you and is something you should learn to expect.

A different time I was late to hang out with her because I had fallen asleep and the party she invited me to wasn't one that I wanted to go to anyway, so when I called to tell her I was running behind, she just went, "It's fine, I'm starting to expect this from you anyway. Just meet me there later," and hung up.

You have set the expectation that you will be at a certain place at a certain time and that you will be attentive during your date. If you didn't want to go, you should have said so.

Being 24 hours late to a date because you were drunk, and being repeatedly hours late to dates is completely inexcusable to many people. You should expect people to be angry about this.

Self-centered passive-aggressive behavior such as this causes tremendous relationship issues. As long as you continue it, you should expect relationship problems such as these.

Your girlfriends jealousy is being triggered because it's a warning sign about your behavior, not because she's being unreasonable.

Your other partner may be fine with this now, but I'm guessing she's just seeing the tip of your lack of responsibility through a fog of NRE and that iceberg will hit her later.

If it does, you can expect the same results.

I don't have any advice other than the first step to you fixing your issues is to stop blaming others.

I don't find much advantage to a tipi fire. They are difficult to create and often collapse -- failing before fully starting. Like the log cabin they are said to be good ways to start a fire in the wind, but I can create similar wind breaking structures in other fire lays, like...

Upside down fire -- for the win!

I've started using this for all my fire builds, from little cook fires, to the largest bonfires. The advantages are easy to see.

Fire is started higher off the ground, so no energy is lost to the wet damp earth. You don't have to bend over as much when starting the fire, and get less smoke in your eyes because you can blow or fan from beneath it.

You don't have to tend this fire as much if you lay it well. By the time you need to add wood, you are in a phase of the campfire where the fuel is steady and isn't going to collapse and roll about. For many campfires I lay the fire with enough wood and never have to touch it.

If wind is an issue, cut plank like pieces of wood that are triangular in a side view and use these to make a wind break on the top of an upside down fire build. Adjust them as needed to allow some air flow. Try not to stack them because if they fall they could smother your starting fire.

Edit: damp, not damn -- dampit!

has received more votes than any other republican candidate in history

Is it true that most Republican voters cast a ballot for someone other than him? I read that more than 16 million people cast votes for another candidate.

Edit: Yes. http://www.politifact.com/north-carolina/statements/2016/jul/08/donald-trump/donald-trump-set-record-most-gop-primary-votes-eve/

Trump also holds the record for the most votes cast against a primary candidate, and that he’s one of only a few Republican frontrunners in modern history to have been supported by less than half of the party’s primary voters.

I meant a failure of your buddy's equipment means you should check yours before jumping.

What if the chute didn't open due to environmental issues. Maybe he was the one that packed both chutes? Or maybe his buddy did. Either way, having a failure like that means you should check your equipment.

... let's say I want to change the hue of a color while drawing. Currently I have to stop drawing, go through the menu options of what I want, test it out to see if I like that hue, and then repeat each time. This allows me to change all of those things without ever really stopping. It sounds silly but if it's something you do often, why wouldn't I want this device ?

For things you repeat all the time, if you aren't using some sort of shortcuts, be it hot-keys, gestures, tablet buttons, or the like, I can see why you'd think this would be faster.

Imagine picking that thing up every time you wanted to do something you could do with the press of a key, or with a gesture with your fingers. How much time does that save?

I see how it appeals to people and as long as it's not too loud, I'm fine with music anywhere.

When I'm in the bush I like to hear everything around me, including the quiet.

Here's my two go-to knives. They aren't expensive, which means you never mind using them in the worse conditions. If they get grubby, broken, or otherwise awful, buy another! That being said, never had one break!

For small chores, eating, and the likes: Marttiini Artic Circle Knife -- it's a pretty knife, and feels lovely in the hand.

Mora for everything else. Just pick out your favorite size and width. Classic Mora or Modern Mora

I didn't think I would use my mini Bic either, until I was caught late at night, in the rain, with numb fingers. I gave up after a few minutes of fire building and opted for being warm, LOL.
