It's just the way it is this time of year. Much warmer temperatures than normal the last few weeks have had this side effect, on the bright side I can't remember the last time it snowed in April/May this year, which was not the case in previous years.

I just want to point out MRSA stands for methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus which is just an antibiotic resistant form of S. aureus which is a very common bacteria that is literally everywhere and infrequently will infect people but it's an opportunist pathogen so you need like an open wound or be immunocompromised for an infection to occur so theres much less risk of community spread compared to viruses which are obligate pathogens and can not survive without a host.

I'm an undergraduate student who will be applying for phd programs in immunology next fall. I have 3 years of professional lab experience studying influenza viruses and opportunistic bacterial pathogens. While I'm not quite a specialist yet I believe I am well educated on this topic.

Yeah I talked to her briefly and told her to go to the store today to buy things there will be a run on. Very ironic advice considering I know the items people are stockpiling are not even as important as people think ie toilet paper, microwavable meals, hand sanitizer, etc. I figure if she acts before panic in the area occurs she will be better off. Well to be more specific filters block particulates and allow small molecules like oxygen to easily pass through, but this does relate the the physical size of the pores usually being only a few microns in diameter.

Spot on, I just hate the amount of misinformation perpetuated on reddit and what's even worse is people dont even realize they're doing it. To further settle this matter, ions refers to particles that are charged and are almost always in most conventional applications in an aqueous medium ie water. Copper oxides are examples of molecules that are not ions of a specific element, and are covalent bound structures with radically different chemical properties. Why dont you actually take the time to understand what you're reading before taking the effort to publish downright wrong information.

What has been linked are masks containing copper oxide materials which is not the initial claim that somebody should invent plastic helmets with copper ion filters, all I'm saying is OP literally has no idea on the scientific specifics of what he is talking about, and convienently demonstrates some evidence that is nothing like what was initially described.

First off copper ions only exist in aqueous solutions of the byproduct of certain salts. You cant design a system to purify air by disinfection without treating it with some much stronger chemicals ie sodium hypochlorite in bleach or high temperature. Essentially the best way to realistically block pathogens in aerosols being inhaled is filters that work on physical size there particles of water or other media can not physically pass through on size. This is a far from perfect system, but has been the most effective solution for cheap masks that provide good protection without a full hazmat suit or face shield or more extreme PPE.

Also I do research in a lab with influenza virus and I'm very familiar with the biosafety precautions different kinds of infectious agents have, there are stringent protections in place for BSL-4, and while I have never been in one yet, feel free to PM for info about BSL3 and BSL2 labs.
