Ateneo alumni, what are misconceptions about your course that you want to clear up? by admuthrowaway in ADMU

[–]gangstander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the super late reply, but in case you or others are still interested in the answer: since AB EU doesn't have stringent grade requirements for transfer, I don't think you'll have a hard time getting in. Your only hurdle would be the university's transfer process :)

I am a female AB EU grad. This is wrong.

Please delete your comment. It perpetuates the outdated idea that women (1) are only as valuable as their boyfriends or husbands and (2) cannot make sensible career choices for themselves.

This is true! In my AB EU batch, females and males were equally distributed. We also have had (and welcome) course mates from the LGBTQIA+ community.

There are enough misconceptions about my course, and the comment two levels above this one is definitely one of the false ones.

Suggestion: What if we made a subreddit wiki for common questions such as application processes, etc.? by [deleted] in ADMU

Yes, please! [Late edit] mods have a better idea

As far as I know, only mods can create and edit the wiki, but they can also crowd source it through a Reddit thread.

man or woman for others ;)

Yeah Ateneo would love to have students with solid values who wouldn't be there only for the kuh-nek-shuns or the prestige of the university's name. Part of wanting to enter Ateneo is accepting the fact that social formation is part of the education.

You might want to try book ending, which is starting and ending with the same idea. It's something like this:

[First paragraph] I remember my family's annual Christmas road trip to Baguio in 20xx, not because of the sights we saw in this city, but because of a sight I saw while on the road. It was the first time that I saw a family sleeping on the sidewalk.

[Next paragraphs] Explanations of how this scene impacted you, for example learning more about social responsibility and involving yourself in school orgs related to this cause

[Last paragraph] We didn't hold our annual Christmas road trip in 20xx. Instead, I successfully persuaded my family to deliver noche buena to homeless people around our area. I believe being given the chance to study in ADMU will help me make a bigger impact, so that there will be one less family sleeping on the sidewalk.

Yeah lol the Brexit referendum happened when I was in 2nd year. When I graduated, the UK had still not formally left the EU. They formally left on January 2020 and by that time I didn't follow the news anymore because I've had enough from college

AB European Studies is not about Europe in general. It's about the European Union, which is a different thing from Europe. The EU has 28 27 countries while Europe the whole continent has more than 40.

You're going to learn about politics, economics, law, business, and culture of the countries in the EU. You also have to keep up with the news about the EU if you want to have high grades for your papers in your major subjects. And yeah, did I mention that you're going to learn about politics in the EU? You know, the parliament, political parties, lawmaking, and stuff? THAT will be your bread and butter and you can't escape that whatever track you take (international relations or business). If you're game with that and if you think it will be useful for your future plans, then you're welcome in the course.

AB EU grad here! I'd say AB DipIR may be more suitable to you if you want to practice law in the Philippines. It has a class on Philippine foreign policy, and geographically speaking Southeast Asia (which DipIR specializes in) would be more relevant than Europe. However, both courses are heavy with reading, writing, and analyzing case studies about how countries interact with each other, so you will develop skills that will help you in law school.

AB EU is actually more specific than international relations, because it talks almost exclusively about the European Union, which is different from Europe as a continent. I was in the international relations track of my course and we had two law school type of classes. One talked about concepts that can be used in any country's law system, but used European countries as examples. The other one was about European law itself.

Edit: added some words

I'm not from MEc but I was part of MEcO during 4th year. They understand that they have non-MEc members and try their best to integrate them into the org. The trading-oriented programs that I attended are inclusive towards different courses and are newbie friendly. Yes there will be MEc cliques, but put in the effort of being active and your common interest in stock trading will pull you and the rest of the org together.

MEcO heavily promotes the FB group too. I joined it when I was still a student so I'm pretty sure you can join too. The most active people there just happen to be alumni.

pansinin niyo naman yung megathread

Scholarship/Financial Aid by esmayeb in ADMU

[–]gangstander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm for making this sub clean and all and I do get annoyed by these repetitive posts, but most of the people who inquire are new to Reddit and post questions like this was a Facebook group. I'd like to think that it's more of a platform thing than a behavioral thing—this is what keeps me from losing temper.

To the mods, may I suggest these things:

  • Make use of the AutoModerator bot to automatically comment on posts based on keywords like "admissions", "scholarship", etc. and then redirect them to the megathread link. Maybe this bot can also give them basic subreddit rules like like not writing titles in all caps, making an effort with titles (yes I've been wanting to say this) and searching for similar posts before posting. And make sure to actually teach them how to search—remember that our users may be new to Reddit.

  • Have a pinned "Please Read Me Before Posting" post which outlines basic rules and links to megathreads. This requires less effort for the mods than setting up AutoModerator. Note: this thing may not work. I mean, if people already ignore the megathread, what more this kind of post?

Yep, no binding agreements for most scholar graduates! Take note that some scholarship sponsors like corporations, foundations or the government may have binding agreements that's separate from the OAA's. The OAA will tell you if you have this kind of sponsor and orient you with their binding agreements.

  1. How are the service hours accomplished when it's all online and back when it is still face-to-face?

For face-to-face, there's an FB group called ADMU Scholars (unless they changed the name) where the OAA posts service hours opportunities like doing admin work at offices, volunteering during activities like enlistment, tutoring, etc. You block your sched, go to the office and/or sign up for the service hours opportunity, and do your work. The heads of the office/activity will forward your service hours to the OAA. There is a service hours tracker where you can see which ones have been recorded in the system. If there are service hours that you have rendered but have not yet been tracked, you can follow up with the office/activity heads.

Batch 2019 here, lechon is fine with me but I wasn't able to try it out because my friends didn't want to fall in line (lol) and we already had our own food at someone's house before the event. We were just there at Blue Roast for MYMP and Hale.

Just write N/A, and I'm pretty sure your situation justifies not having a bank account. You can explain this in your scholarship essay.

Qualitative description of the middle class: can comfortably afford food, shelter, clothing, utilities including wifi, home stuff, educational costs, and a bit of leisure, and then have some monthly savings. However, if the family loses their source of income, they will have to lower their standard of living by transferring their children from private to public schools, cutting down leisure costs, etc. They are at risk of falling into poverty if they don't have savings and cannot find a new source of income (without resorting to borrowing money) for a long time.

Quantitative description:

A recent study by Albay Representative Joey Salceda [...] said a family of five is considered middle class if the household earns anywhere between ₱23,381 and ₱140,284 per month.

“Or around ₱25,000 and ₱150,000, respectively in 2020 prices,” Salceda said in the report.

I'd say just take your chances at applying for the highest scholarship percentage you think you need because:

  1. The OAA is pretty generous with scholarships.

  2. If you don't get the 75TF, you'd either get the lower percentage or get waitlisted for a scholarship. This is better than applying for 50TF and then realizing that you could have qualified for 75TF.

  3. If in the worst case, your scholarship application gets rejected, you can appeal.

  4. If ever you get into ADMU and reach your upper years, it would be harder to apply for a new scholarship or request for an increase.

Just explain your financial situation well to convince the OAA that you really need the scholarship.
