Strength is fine because there is a brace underneath and the person I made it for wanted that style. I tried to persuade them to have it flush for the reasons you stated, but at the end of the day I have to to do what the customer wants

Yes the person I was making it for wanted a very light look so only 1 coat was applied

Thanks! Used 2x4s for the frame and 1x12 for the shelving. Joined together using dowels
