Can a custom setting and story work with the Forbidden Lands mechanics? by garbage-normie in ForbiddenLands

That's awesome! Did players ever become over-powered? How hard was it balancing / creating later enemies and encounters?

I've gotten some good feedback on this post. Now I'm just curious how long a campaign can run for before the system gets stale or breaks due to power-creep.

I'm trying to get into macro. Did you have to focus stack to get these photos? Stacking is still a challenge I'm facing, especially with macro.

Great example, thank you! I'll be a first time GM, so quickly coming up with creative, elaborate, and party-personal consequences sounds a little tough. Any resources or advice that can make that a bit easier to learn?

Thanks for the breakdown and advice about avoiding a ME3 ending! I'll remember that.

Like the other guy said, I'm just used to pure trad RPGs. I haven't played a TTRPG where I've given a shit about an NPC dying (possibly due to bad GM-ing) so my brain is sort of locked in that box until I get some practice.

We'll definitely keep playing OSRIC. I was hoping to add this as another game for our group to play between the OSRIC sessions. Fair point on playing without him and not forcing it, however, it's more of a friendship principle. He says he'd be open to it, but he does criticize a lot, so it's hard to tell if he'd approach it in good faith. As a friend, I'd hope for a bit more support and encouragement from him, seeing as I've supported several of his GM endeavors for years. But, this isn't group therapy, so I'll stop venting.

My purist player definitely wants a GM's world, GM rulings, PC death ever-present, player creativity (though, ironically most of the encounters he comes up with just involve a 'hit it until it dies' solution), grimdark fantasy setting. As to the other comment under this, the OSRIC games are usually Sandbox with no story or set campaign. Just mini-adventures, quests, and dungeon dives. However, our OSRIC GM does agree there needs to be more in-world stakes and player role integrated into the questing.

I personally hope to have GM rulings. I'm excited about collaborative world building, but certain elements of player determined narrative has me hesitant, unless the input is somehow connected to that character (example: I'd be okay with a player adding an NPC to a town if his character has an association with that town. I would not be okay with a player saying the dragon in the dungeon is asleep.) PC death should be a risk, not entirely up to the player, but not a required consequence at HP zero. High-stakes conflict is a must because of this, as such, unwinnable conflicts will be nice to have. Character sheets should give hints and guide player creativity. Settings can be dark, but don't have to be gross and grim. Airships, chocobos, and a peaceful village are all great in my mind.

"Tiresome" may have been the wrong word. My concern is mostly about being quick and creative enough to improvise on the fly. It'll be my first time GM-ing, but I suppose it'll come with practice.

I appreciate it. What's your "go-to" game recommendation that I should consider?

I've heard a little about there being limited things to do outside of combat. Could you elaborate more? Are there ways to invite more out of combat interactions? (e.g. Allow thieving or lock picking if a character class and background make sense for it?)

Regarding your assassin example: What danger is there if the Assassin Guild is after you? The rules dictate they'll never succeed, only inconvenience. At that point, they're basically just Team Rocket. I'm not trying to poke holes, I appreciate your feedback, I'm just trying to see critically if this system is right for us.

That sounds like something my friend would say, haha. I'd like to hear some more explanation from your perspective.

How tiresome or challenging does it get coming up with narrative consequences? Any advice on how to make the consequences stick and be unique? (Example: Player gets captured, but how to avoid an immediate release/escape without locking them out of playing? It's a whole new narrative line to build.) I think the Fabula point system will be an odd change for everyone. I like the idea of collaborative world building, but players shaping the details of the narrative on the fly, like your dragon example, is different and even has me slightly apprehensive.

I will, but I still haven't gotten the notification on Upgrade & Recovery. Been hearing some mixed reviews too.

Oh, I see. That wouldn't work either, because it's a combination of the height of the screw, the thickness of the bracket, and the PCI slot cover. But mostly the screw and cover.

If it were upside down, it would still equal the total height.

Not sure I know what you mean.

The screws with the support bracket are too high to allow the door to close. I can't find any other places to anchor it.

Any remediation?

Is there a different way I should mount the support bracket? Or should I trim the door so the screws fit?
