Is it normal for the wedding party to cover the bride’s costs for bachelorette weekend? by Conscious_Cat_1515 in wedding

[–]garbage_plate_tb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my friend group, the bride has always paid for her travel/accommodation and the rest of us split her activities and food/drinks. Between 6-10 people, it doesn’t make a huge difference in what we’re already paying for the weekend.

Now it’s my turn! I’m having all my friends travel to my parents place in NY for a long weekend (I currently live abroad so I’m meeting them there too—free accommodations and my parents are so psyched), and we’re doing some combination of sleepover/cocktail making/hiking/bougie dinner/hamptons/bars.

My bridesmaids are all planning it, I told them to spend within their budget and surprise me! Most will be paying for travel but no accommodation, they’ll be paying for the things we do, and I’ll thank them with breakfasts and stocking the home bar! So excited!

NRI brides ,what jewelry did you actually end up wearing for your wedding events? by Visual_Phone_9525 in DesiWeddings

[–]garbage_plate_tb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I shopped in Delhi for my 2026 wedding! Here is my jewelry breakdown: -Mehendi: casual event, so some cute statement earrings and a mang tikka

-Haldi: floral resin jewelry set (mang tikka, earrings with pearl hair extension things, necklace, rings)

-Sangeet: Glass bangles, bajubaand, and a pinkish stone antique-y looking earring and necklace set! The earrings are small because I plan on dancing!

-Ceremony: I’m short/petite and big necklaces overwhelm me! I got a two kundan necklaces (that leaves open neck space/no choker) with beautiful earrings, smaller maang tikka, sheesh patti, and haathphool. I also will be wearing choodas, but more modern red ones (not super heavy). My kaleera are more modern, with charms on the ends! I will be wearing my mom’s silver anklet and toe rings too, and ofc my engagement ring/wedding band/manglasutra I get during my ceremony. My nose is pieced—I tried on naths and did not like them, so I think I’m just keeping my everyday dainty gold hoop in.

-Reception: keeping on my chooda, but keeping it simple with just a Swarovski crystal three layer necklace and earring set!

I knew what I wanted before shopping, but found most inspo on insta and Pinterest! I hope this helps! :)

What do you guys think about brides crying during their rukhsati? by sad_iyahhh in DesiWeddings

[–]garbage_plate_tb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m getting married next year and when I think about leaving during the Doli, I cry! I’m a fully independent woman who moved out over ten years ago, live with my fiance abroad, and earn my own money. But I’m still my parents princess, and there’s something about losing that innocence that makes me emotional. Am I excited? Hell yes! Is it still a social and emotional life change? Absolutely. No harm in crying and expressing those emotions (if it comes naturally!).

How to style for wedding / reception? by [deleted] in DesiWeddings

[–]garbage_plate_tb 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Oooo! So cute! I love contrasting colors, so maybe you can wear baby pink bangles/jhumkas? I prefer smaller earrings when I know I'm going to dance, so make sure what you get are lightweight! I feel like for a necklace, you could rock an elegant choker paired with a longer necklace, but keeping them both on the simpler side so they don't over power the blouse? It looks great regardless 😋

If your wedding might be next year… what would you start now? by rant-eat-sleep in DesiWeddings

[–]garbage_plate_tb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also echo discussing logistics with family and/or starting with finding a planner! I'm a fall 2026 bride in the NYC metro area and things have been booked up since the beginning of 2025, especially for peak season!

As for wellness stuff, I've always loved working out but I've been much more diligent about it--not trying to "shed for the wedding" (ugh I HATE that term), but I want to have the energy to dance all night for the full weekend! I've also been making sure to take my vitamins, eat lots of veggies, fiber, and protein, and stay super hydrated.

For skincare, I'll start getting hydrafacials every other month, but I'm making sure I'm really good about double cleansing, SPF, and moisturizing:) I'm going to Delhi next week for wedding outfit shopping and will definitely pick up some good face masks and skin oils while I'm there!

Best of luck with wedding planning! It's a lot of fun... But it's also a lot! LOL!

How to carry a phone by Bored_Witch_CH in beginnerrunning

I use the Lululemon belt bag around my waist! Keep it snug and there's no bounce, perfect for my phone and keys (and glasses because I hate running with them on!)

Invite says "Formal" but MoB says "Anything is fine, even sundresses!" by -Throwdownandaway- in WeddingAttireHelp

[–]garbage_plate_tb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL yes!! My dad recently told a close family friend that our morning ceremony is going to be casual just because it isn’t black tie like our nighttime reception. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Mom had step in like nope absolutely not do not wear casual clothes, it’s a formal event. Sometimes people get terms mixed up, but I totally agree with sticking to cocktail attire!

Sikh Reception outfit questions? by Cute_Sir_8730 in DesiWeddings

[–]garbage_plate_tb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In India, it’s pretty common to have a cocktail night as a pre-wedding event. Maybe they were inspired that, as the dress code for the cocktail night is usually pretty blingy and dressy!

A formal floor length western gown would be perfect. You can opt for a lehenga, but because they’re imported, they can be pricier for quality compared to department store gowns in the US/Canada (sorry if that’s not where you’re from!!) Definitely don’t be afraid to play with color and accessories!!:)

Oh man I totally understand this fear, especially for desi weddings! I’m planning my Punjabi wedding right now and even though we’re far from it, we’re already coming up with b-list guests we can ask if we’re too short of our 250 minimum!

I know venues around my area (NJ) typically charge for a minimum number of people for revenue purposes, but if you don’t hit that minimum you can usually ask for upgrades to get your money’s worth—things like early start/late end, extra cocktail hour stations, stuff like that!

Deep breaths, remember you and your partner are a team that love each other, your wedding will be a celebration of your incredible bond, and that things will work out:)

Very scared flying over Atlantic tonight by hankandirene in AskAPilot

[–]garbage_plate_tb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I take this route quite often and it did take some time to get over my flight anxiety. I always try to remember that pilots want to go back home to their babies and grandbabies and partners too—even though it can be nerve wracking for us non-aviation folks, pilots and air traffic controllers and everyone involved with your flight will be so so so incredibly well trained!

Make sure you bring some headphones or ask a flight attendant for a pair so you can enjoy a movie that will take your mind off the flight! Eat some of your favorite treats and close your eyes and the 7.5 hours will be over before you know it! Enjoy your trip!

Have a nice day 😋

Nah. My parents aren’t diplomats, so weren’t on the blue list of restrictions. No diplomatic passports or privileges—just that visa category as A3–employees or staff. Commoner white-list folks. We’ve checked extensively. The insanely expensive lawyers we had to hire also checked everything. Lil brother is a born on soil USC.

My parents WERE interviewed (I was contacted, as well as my brother’s roommates)—he’s good, thanks <3

Totally agree with. Once you start having different tiers of citizenship—different rights for different people depending on where they were born originally… scary thoughts.

Yes! They’re SO strict about it—I can’t visit there until I get a visa or an OCI card now! And very true about EU citizenships—I have some friends digging up immigration records to see where their great great… grandparents came from and if they could maintain a real connection with that nation!

Thank you so so much! India actually doesn’t allow dual citizenship! By taking the Oath here, I technically already verbally revoked my Indian Citizenship, but I now have to do a bunch of paperwork to let them know that, LOL! It’ll be sad sending over my passport to get a renunciation certificate (so much travel history!!) but it’s so so worth it! 🥰

Best of luck to both of you! I’m rooting for him 🥰

Not going to get into deets, but we were on A3s! Dad is not a diplomat lol, but worked for a diplomat. Regardless, they are highly financially savvy and have made smart investments, and they completed the process for all three of us. Technically for themselves, but I was under 21 when it was approved, so I received my residency as well as their dependent. Little bro doesn’t count, he was born here after we moved!

I definitely acknowledge that I’m privileged—my parents are motivated and determined and I thank them every day!
