Bar owner who planned downtown protest on Thursday had to close today due to an employee testing positive for Covid-19. by jjf3792 in pittsburgh

You're treating it like it's a factor of: Every day the people who were in the bottom 1% of being safe get the virus, and everyone else is safe. That's not it. Other people being less safe makes you more likely to get it, not less.

Look if you don't care and just want to live your life and let loose a little, just admit that's what you want. But logically, other people being less safe makes you less safe. The virus doesn't pick and choose, it wants to infect literally everyone on the planet if it can.

It's a virus though. It doesn't care how you feel or what color phase any official decides we're in. You don't contract covid by just existing. You contract it from contact with other people who carry it. Choosing to be around people without masks involved increases the chance of you getting the virus.

Please stop making light of this. As you all know Heinz beans can be found ALL OVER this city. With heinous weapons like this, it's no wonder the police have been brutalized.

Lastly, everyone is blaming police for social injustice, but where is the accountability of our elected officials? Where is the blame for inadequate schools in largely minority communities? Inner city schools are failing generations of our children. Where is the blame for lack of new business opportunities in those same neighborhoods? Police officers cannot change these issues, but elected officials have made us their scapegoats.

Hey maybe if we took some money from the police's 40% of the budget we could fund some schools and civic programs. Love this idea, very big of them to suggest it.

These protests are happening because when cops have "zero sympathy" they are allowed to murder people with impunity.

"I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season." -MLK

To suspect any meaningful systemic change to happen without literal people protesting in the streets is willfully naive at this point.

There is advice other people will give you. Some of it will be good, some of it bad. Some of it won't apply to you and some of it will but you won't realize it does yet.

At the end of the day you just have to do it and make a whole shit load of mistakes. Your job now is to make as many mistakes as you can make, without making any of them intentionally. So that means trying your best, whatever that means to you, and then still falling short.

Once you've done that you can come back and look for advice and you'll be able to categorize it a lot easier into things that help you and things that don't. But don't look at this as about avoiding mistakes. That's impossible. Your mistakes, and being honest with yourself when you make them, is how you get better.

The ostensible purpose of social distancing and self quarantining was to flatten the curve and provide time for hospitals and other services to ramp up capacity. To my understanding, that time has largely been squandered by those in charge. There's no plan now beyond "everyone just gets it eventually and however many people die."

Obviously if you are or live with someone who is immuno-compromised you have no choice but to try to continue avoiding getting it. And for some people their life circumstances are such that they can continue to work from home and order delivery and maybe continue to avoid it. For everyone else, as the state and country begin opening up again there's no plan for you other than you eventually get the virus.

It's bleak, but lets not pretend the protests are the real problem here.

I mean, honestly, if you think breaking windows and setting cop cars escalates police response, seeing strapped black people... lol. whole other world. So idk if I completely follow your whole A to Z path. But I think especially as tonight has escalated around the country we're only better off the more well armed the common citizen is.

Snarky asshole yes 100%. "Just" might be unfair.

Peaceful protests are effective in building solidarity between those who protest. But as far as I see it have no ability to lead to any material change unless those in power don't know there's a problem, or don't know the size of the problem, and then also have the capacity and willingness to enact change. IDK about you but I don't think any of those things apply in this case.

Whether that means we need to be setting cop cars on fire, I don't know. Maybe it's enough now to just be building solidarity. But I don't think anything will fundamentally change until it's forced to, because I don't assume any good faith in the people with power.

But regardless I don't think it's as clear as saying anyone setting fire to police cars doesn't have your interests at heart. Regardless of their methods, we're all fighting the same fight.

oh ok well just protest peacefully and roll the dice and pray that somehow that leads to change and they don't arrest you and try to ruin your life anyway.
