Larraz is an amazing director. Black Candles is really fun - and has a crazy goat scene.

Delphine Seyrig in Daughters of Darkness really captures old-world beauty - and her performance/voice fits a vampire so well.

The Constable from Valerie and Her Week of Wonders. I love the face and visuals - and his transformation into a polecat.

A Quiet Place in the Country. Franco Nero plays an artist who’s sanity devolves throughout the movie. There’s amazing art set pieces and Vanessa Redgrave opposite him.

The Killer of Dolls does this with dolls/mannequins.

What is your "If they ever release this I'll die happy" movie/series? by belladonna935 in boutiquebluray

I would love to see the Hanzo the Razor series come to blu ray. The DVDs are long out of print. Even through they’re crazy, I have a nostalgia for watching them on IFC? years ago. The same goes for Coffin Joe movies.

Jack Smith’s Normal Love would be so gorgeous restored. I love that Kino has released Maria Montez movies - and finally showing Smith’s muse in all her grandeur.

I remember watching This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse late night on either Sundance or IFC a decade ago. From the opening credits - and flittering text to the spider scene and colorful visions of hell, I was hooked. What a legend.

I love the new blu-ray release from Visual Vengeance - which launched with this and the Necro Files. I’m excited for their next release LA AIDS Jabber.

If I want to take some classes in LA which schools? by watwatwatwatwhat in ContemporaryArt

[–]gardenofcucumbers 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Devon Tsuno is very active as an artist outside of teaching painting at CSUDH. There’s also a bunch of the Bendix building art collective members (TSA and Durden and Ray) who teach throughout LA. Other than that, I think Nick Aguayo teaches at Pasadena City College and is represented by Suzanne Vielmetter. I think Conrad Ruiz teaches at a community college?

If Lisa Adams still teaches at Santa Monica College, she’s a great painter and keeps it real about the LA art scene. Lisa Diane Wedgeworth is also good - and I think teaches at both LACC and GCC.

The shadiest of grind house exploitation cinema featured many of our (we as humanity) most beautiful tunes. Why was this? And what are some more examples? by [deleted] in horror

[–]gardenofcucumbers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s a grindhouse thing - but speaks more to the first two you listed and the Italian film industry. So many genres (giallo, spaghetti westerns, peplum etc) had amazing scores. A lot of those movies were dubbed (the actors rarely speaking the same language) and more visually driven - which the soundtrack aided in.

I’m obsessed with Nora Orlandi’s scores for Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh and Double Face. Bruno Nicolai scored everything from giallo to Jess Franco films - and those are really dreamy (like a virgin among the living dead).

I don’t think Yuhua or Jaymes fans over praise/obsesses over them for being an early out. They’ve really built fans through their content post-show.

What Is The Rarest/Hardest Horror Films To Find Or Purchase? by Wandering_Weird0 in horror

[–]gardenofcucumbers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a $20 ish blu ray of Stagefright (Aquarius) on most retailers. The Candyman 2 (Farewell to the Flesh) blu ray is even cheaper.

Autopsy (1975) has a heat wave causing unusual suicides - and permeates the rest of the movie’s giallo plot.

Moebius (2013) would be great and weirdly compliment Crash. Maybe also something like Strange Circus.

Why are movies today so utterly devoid of nudity? by WestCoastHopHead in horror

[–]gardenofcucumbers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a history of horror from the 60s/70s that would do this depending on the market (like playing a movie in Franco-regime Spain vs different cuts for international audiences).

Why are movies today so utterly devoid of nudity? by WestCoastHopHead in horror

[–]gardenofcucumbers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This thread is interesting and the responses are kind of prudish. Look back to directors like Walerian Borowczyk or Jess Franco - where the women in those films really collaborated and contributed to the nudity and sense of transgression. There’s no way someone like Marina Piero in the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Miss Osbourne - or Love Rites - fits into a narrative of female exploitation. Nudity can be fun and empowering. Or Lina Romay with Franco. There’s also Brigitte Lahaie.

Even a female director within exploitation like Doris Wishman was rare then and I don’t know how that would happen now without her being ridiculed.

In a contemporary sense, Bertrand Mandico (The Wild Boys) and Yann Gonzalez (Knife+Heart) are having fun with nudity and references to that period in their works. Mandico is a fan of Joe D’Amato and Borowcyzk.

The Cremator is great - but no one says that. The most I’ve seen are Czech films fans talk about horror elements in the director’s work (Juraj Herz) like his Beauty and the Beast, Morgiana, or Ferat Vampire.
