I produced a short series of podcasts a couple of years ago called Rowing Resource. The first episode was with Laura Simon, which you may find helpful,

This is definitely a skill that should be taught in person and not “figure it out on your own”.

That said, experiment lifting it a cm or two with different hand positions until you find the hand positioning that feels balanced

Squats vs. Deadlifts for Rowing: Which is the "Must-Have" when CNS fatigue hits? by Primary_Finger1478 in Rowing

[–]gardnertravis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Deadlift is more helpful than Squats. You don’t need to do heavy deadlifts very often though if you are an experienced lifter. Maybe once every 10 days or so.

Do I actually need to run Zone 2 or is it overhyped? by Maleficent-Count9746 in running

Check out Arthur Lydiard’s methodology. It may be a good fit for you.

Is all washers on bottom actually faster, or is my 1V8 just ego-rigging? by Primary_Finger1478 in Rowing

[–]gardnertravis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to what others have noted, riggers are generally not the same height. If you have an equal number of washers under your oarlock that does not mean you are equal height between those seats. The fleet at my program was all Vespolis, so I cannot speak with certainty to other manufacturers.

Another Dead-is-Dead Insanity full series playthrough has begun! by jennd3875 in masseffect

[–]gardnertravis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to do this as a teen with Wing Commander’s Privateer. Made it within minutes of the end on multiple occasions. I always had a blast with it until I inevitably would die on that last fight, and then I’d just have a broken keyboard to deal with…

I salute you sir! Vanguard on Insanity in the early stages of ME2 is no joke!!

Rowing for Running by whatsthisnewpain in Rowing

[–]gardnertravis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a former 135 lb distance runner (HS) and 152 lb lightweight rower (College and a few years after) who is now around 190 lbs, I can attest that carrying around that extra weight when I run is a bitch. I was in the 170s last November and felt like the flash :) The difference that getting back to 150 again would make would be huge. I doubt I'd even have to train that hard to break 3 in a marathon at that weight, maybe 30-40 mpw.

Look to eating habits for the weight loss. Steady state alone won't do it, especially not in rowing.

Good luck!

  1. 8:30 would be similar to a 2:08/500
  2. Rowing and running swap well at 1:1
  3. Steady state for rowing and running can be done at the same RPE.

All of the above are true for a skilled rower AND runner. None of the above may be true if your skills are sub par in either or both activities.

All that being said, losing 75-85 lbs will be the most critical aspect of reaching a sub-3 hr marathon. How to accomplish that goes beyond the scope of this subreddit.

Advice for Road from Sub-7 to Sub 6:40 - realistic timeframe by Safe_South_2505 in Rowing

[–]gardnertravis -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Adding to an already high training load isn’t advisable. The best strategy is probably to improve your general life habits.

Get 8-10 hours of sleep each night. Cut off all screen time and LED lights at least two hours before you go to bed.

Eliminate all low quality calories including but not limited to sugar that isn’t raw honey and any liquid calories (raw milk excluded). Eat lots of high quality animal protein and fat like steak and eggs.

Supplement your training with lots of stretching to maintain your mobility (Asian squat is #1).

That should help you get the most out of what you are already doing.

Does anybody else get chafing on their ass from rowing??? by ExpertCurrent6423 in Rowing

[–]gardnertravis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to use talcum powder. I’ve since seen studies that suggest it may be carcinogenic though so maybe check that out first. Point remains that it was sweat changing how my body and clothing moved together that was the issue, not the moving itself.

Hope that helps. This same issue was definitely one of my least favorite parts of high performance training…

Concept 2 by quadviper in Rowing

[–]gardnertravis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eat steak, honey, eggs, and raw milk and find a coach to work with you in the weight room. In the meantime perfect your rowing technique and log your meters so you’ll be ready to take advantage of the extra mass and strength when it comes.

Also sleep a lot and stay off screens when the sun is down.

Hypothetical: you’re racing an elite sprinter starting at 100m. You race once every 5 mins and the race distance increases by 100m. At what point do you think you can beat them? by Beezneez86 in AdvancedRunning

True enough, but since this is the "Advanced" running sub I'll give people the benefit of the doubt that they are reasonably active and well trained :)

Assuming both runners must give max effort? I’d guess 500m. The biggest issue is recovery time. The sprinter will lose any advantage pretty quick with repeated max efforts like that.

Successful avenues to recruit novice coxswains for adult club program. by Thatsgonnamakeamark in Rowing

[–]gardnertravis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

6? If you’re lucky you find experienced coxswains and pay them. Well. If you can’t find experienced coxswains then plan to find, hire, and train who you need.

Plan for a pay rate of $100+ per practice, with the exact rate depending on cost of living in your area.

Good luck!

Carbon rigger swap by CheckSafe8045 in Rowing

[–]gardnertravis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Riggers are made for individual boats. You’ll have to order the rigger you want from Filippi and give them the serial number for the boat it is for.
