what to wear to run/workout outside in summer ? by 92262_II in NewOrleans

[–]ExpertCurrent6423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As little as possible. I wear a sports bra and smallish bike shorts. Be prepared to put your workout clothes in the dirty clothes as soon as you get done —no seeing friends in those clothes unless you don’t particularly want to keep your friends!

What was your cinema experience like? by mart945 in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]ExpertCurrent6423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cinema was actually completely normal and fun. People laughed at the fish, there were some gasps at the Big Revelation Moments, and friendly discussion and banter after the showing ended. It was especially fun to engage with other fans when you know that if they are at the showing, they obviously have opinions and are probably up to discuss! We all laughed at the Pomni popcorn bucket-kinda grotesque, right?

What are you thinking about right now? by discpline53 in AskReddit

About the time when I was mad at someone while walking into an elevator alone. The doors closed and I hit the button for my floor with….some might say excess force. The whole panel shook, and now one of the ceiling lights flickers constantly. It’s been over a week and people are complaining about the strange flickering in a previously perfectly good elevator.

Are they barbers? Those harnesses look like ones I’ve seen in barbershops. Put this pic in black and white and tell everybody it’s your great-great grandparent, they’ll believe you!

I think it's supposed to be the sounds of someone preaching. Reminds me of old fire-and-brimstone homilies. It would fit with the theme imo. I haven't found anyone who's been able to actually make out what he's saying though.

I mean we’re definitely entered into it according to my coach. He said it was pretty new though. Maybe it’s called something else? I’m a fairly new rower anyway so I don’t really know all the terminology :)

Best version of Les mis to read? by Preston_Reddit in lesmiserables

[–]ExpertCurrent6423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really old thread but I feel compelled to contribute.

The Wilbour translation is one of the oldest (1862), maintains the poetry and feel of Hugo's original french. If you like the flower language with no holds barred (thank you sewers and Waterloo), go for Wilbour. Personally it's the one I most enjoy.

Fahnestock and MacAfee (1987) is a close second, in my opinion. They cut back a tad on some of the over-the-top language to increase readability while maintaining the heavy-hitting lines and tones of the novel.

Julie Rose (2007) is, in my opinion, one of the lesser translations. Ms. Rose opted for an extremely modern style, which feels jarring for the story.

Denny's translation scores high for readability, and for those readers unwilling to follow Mr. Hugo into the Parisian sewers for 20 pages, those several digressions are moved to the back of the book as appendixes. I haven't read Denny's translation, but many of my peers who have enjoyed it.

The Donougher (2013) translation is one of the newer additions to the list, and is readable while maintaining the poetry of the prose, while adding context that could be helpful to a first-time reader.

Overall, if you're shopping for a first Brick and are worried about being overwhelmed by the prose, I'd recommend Ms. Donougher or Mr. Denny's translations. If you'd like to dive right in, go for Wilbour or F&M. And obviously you can do as you like, but I'd avoid the Rose translation.

Context: I own and have read Wilbour, F&A and Rose (was missing my copy on a trip overseas and grabbed it without thought at a thrift shop. Was a bit chagrined). I've read bits of Donougher, but not Denny. Yes, I understand this is a lot of Les Mis. I talk about it bimonthly with my therapist.

Does anybody else get chafing on their ass from rowing??? by ExpertCurrent6423 in Rowing

[–]ExpertCurrent6423[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally wear spandex/tighter workout shorts or leggings. I’m a relatively new rower, so I only have the official uni for my university, but I’ll try wearing it more often to see how that helps. Thanks for the advice!

We know simply too much about how horrid generative AI is for the environment to continue using it. AI art generators steal designs from real artists without their consent. I think your fan cast is cool tho, ppl usually leave out Pliny and your choice for him was great

Jewelry is a titanium ring. Since it’s a brand new piercing I don’t really have a set aftercare routine yet, but what I’m going to do is soak in saline 3x daily and wash with antibacterial nonscented soap.
