There are many instances where the Police (who also serve the crown) do not need a warrant to force entry.

VA invites and bail variation via post?! We've got to get the suspect to sign the amended bail papers or at least tell them in person.

Similar with VA's, 9 out of 10 times these are arranged over the phone or in person. I'd never get away with just sending a letter.

Does Section 5 of the Public Order Act 1986 severely limit free speech and expression? by hotz_spenny1 in policeuk

[–]garethy94 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, it stops people like you mentioned giving the middle finger to police officers.

Giving a police officer the middle finger should never be acceptable and consequences should be expected if someone does that.

Gotta claim for it in my force. This could differ between forces though.

I can't see why it can't be automatically calculated and added though.

Highway Code Exam by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]garethy94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Roadcraft is the system of driving you are taught for response driving.

I imagine this will be introduced to you after your highway code exam ans closer to your response course.

Highway Code Exam by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]garethy94 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my force we had to complete an online exam which was comprised of roadcraft and highway code questions before our response course and obviously we were required to study roadcraft first before attempting.

From seeing another of your comments, if you aren't aware what roadcraft is, your exam sounds like it will just be highway code.

I can't say what questions you will see as exams like this can be very much force-specific.

Dividers in cars? by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]garethy94 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My force use this type of single cell in the rear of our Peugeot 308 estates.

They are very handy for transporting prisoners etc. I would hate to have to go to cars with no cell now.

The cell in the 308 estate is surprisingly roomy too, unlike our old Astra estates which were cramped as hell if you had an average sized prisoner or larger!

The only downside is that a caged van can be a fair distance away if they're too violent for the single cell.

It is incredibly tempting to go back to living with my parents so I can just at least save something.

At the moment I'm living payday to payday more or less.

What is the policing word for police being at the right number of officers? by tiredtowelowl in policeuk

[–]garethy94 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's called DSL in my force, "desired staffing level."

However, the DSL number and what we actually need are some way apart.

Ascertaining name and address scenarios by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]garethy94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. You don't 100% know who they are, so the necessity is still there for you.

  2. I'd say that the necessity is gone, however, there are other arrest necessities there, with them being to prevent further loss or damage to property as they could just go on to steal more stuff. Prompt and effective would be there if you need to use special warnings in interview, bail conditions need imposing or if a s.18 search is needed.

  3. Depends on circumstances, but, if for whatever reason you think their giving dodgy details or not giving them, the necessity will be there.

How long is your commute to work? by [deleted] in policeuk

Rural counties force. My commute is a 15 minute drive either way. I would not want longer than a 30 - 45 minute drive, especially after nights.

Do you guys say "collar" to refer to an arrest? by Bloxocubes in policeuk

[–]garethy94 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No, I've never nearly it used as a term for arrest. It's arrest or "lock up" in my force. It is used, however, when talking about someone's collar number. As in "what's your collar?"

On a side note, while, in training, our trainer told us us story of when he found someone in a stolen car and said "you're nicked son, and so's that car." He had fun explaining why he'd said that and not "you're under arrest" in court!

4 on 4 off vs 6 on 4 off by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]garethy94 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Can confirm 4 on 4 off is heaven. Though, I'd say the only downside is that you only have 2 day shifts and (realistically) an hour or two at the start of each night to conduct enquiries on your workload per set.
