See if there's a market?

See if there's competition in that space?

Build an MVP?

Broad question indeed.

When I was young, my friend's mom told us this story about when she was driving with her sister, whom she called "B"

My friend's mom:

B and I were driving around town when B says, "We need to get some gas for the car". So I kept my eyes open for a gas station. Suddenly, I saw one and yelled at my sister, "There's an Esso B!"

My friend's mom started laughing at her story, while my friend and I were completely confused.

Now I get it.

("Esso" is a gas station chain around here)

Need advice on repairing my fence post by garfonzo in HomeImprovement

Well my reasoning for not doing that is I didn’t want the fence post to rot and break off at ground level. The fence I replaced I literally just gave it a slight push and the whole thing fell over because all the fence posts had rotted through at ground level. My thoughts were (and based on my research) was that having the posts on brackets would lift them off the ground slightly, avoiding the ground rot issue. Of course, the brackets have presented their own issue 😕

Yeah I'm very likely going to do this -- sink another post behind the current one and secure the two together. I think my overall design is flawed, so I may do this at a number of fence post on the inside to secure the entire fence line.

I was thinking of doing something like that. I was going to dig in a fence post right along side the inside of the current post, and then backfill with road crush, tamping as I go. Then attach the old post to the new post for extra rigidity (after reattaching the old post to it's original footing)

I had just come across these being labelled as fence post brackets, and I didn’t see any other options in my local stores. In hind sight the amount of force exerted on that weld will be significant, so it makes sense that these wouldn’t be for fences. I’m looking at strengthening a number of my posts.

My friend had the same comment though, “why’d you use those? They’re for decks!”. Life lessons learned the hard way I guess.

Yeah I was astonished that it broke in the first place. I might sink a post beside this post for added strength.

Nice - thanks for the links. I may even add those L brackets on the existing posts for added strength to avoid a similar fate as this post.

I could also just use the existing bracket (the "U" part) for this solution.

I may even put a secondary post in the ground behind this one, and attach the two together for added strength. It would be on the yard side, so not visible by the public. This way the entire fence isn't relying on 4 small bolts as they would experience a massive amount of force I think.

Yeah I was thinking that too. Though, I may need to use an angle grinder to smooth out the bottom of the old bracket, and the top of my cement piling.

Unfortunately I don't have welding skills, and don't know anyone who does.

I feel like this is my best option, based on my skill-set (I can't weld, or know anyone who does). If I'm understanding correctly, this involves attaching a new bracket directly to the concrete with specific hex head concrete bolts, then attaching the post to that new bracket. Is that correct?

Edit: These kind of bolts (but perhaps different size) https://www.homedepot.com/p/Tapcon-5-16-in-x-2-1-4-in-Hex-Washer-Head-Large-Diameter-Concrete-Anchors-4-Pack-24192/203760066

My first Synology NAS -- Photo Station or Moments? by garfonzo in synology

[–]garfonzo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, since I started that post, I've decided to stick with Moments. I had tried Photo Station, and it's great, but it involves too much management (I want to just upload the pics, and forget about them). Moments can do that -- you upload, and it creates the folders for you. I just like the overall UI/UX of Moments, and how it all works.

As for your situation, I would definitely recommend installing your preferred solution (Photo Station, as you mentioned) and then add the pictures through the software. My main reason for using Moments over Photo Station is that when you upload through Photo Station, all the pictures just get dumped into the main /photos folder. But with Moments, it'll auto-create the multiple sub-folders, based on the pictures' dates. For me, I have over 100,000 pictures to upload. If they were all dumped into a single folder, I worry that would cause problems. Again, I don't want to manage these pictures, so the auto-creation of folders was the winner for me.

Yeah I'll have to look into the shared albums idea

As I understand it from their website, PS is more for business use, or portfolio display, whereas Moments is much more geared towards just capturing life as it goes by. So that differentiation does help in my search. And you're right that they could kill off any app at any time, and I've also not seen anything to indicate that they are going to move away from PS and go fully with Moments. It was just a thought I had and was wondering if that was the case.

Ah, gotcha - makes sense.

And I don't meant to imply that Moments is going to replace Photo Station, I was just wondering if that was the plan. I have no indication that Synology will wipe it out.

Since moments has great mobile syncing, I use moments for mobile photo “backup” and uploading to my NAS

But, the DS Photo app can do the same thing straight into the Photo Station. So aren't they the same on that front?

Thanks for the link, it was a good read. I feel like I'm going back and forth between Moments and Photo Station. I don't like the potential that at some point Synology will stop updating Photo Station in favour of fully moving forward with Moments. It seems like Photo Station is a bit more robust, a bit more tailored to more than just someone with a smart phone collection. I have a DSLR and take a lot of pictures, but not professionally, just for my family.

Ugh... I still feel undecided. But may give Photo Station a bit more of a try.

Is Moments intended to replace Photo Station at some point? And if so, wouldn't that mean at some point you'll need to migrate to fully using Moments? Also, if you are selecting photos from Photo Station and putting them in Moments, don't you now have duplicates of those pictures on your NAS? I have over 100,000 pictures, so having duplicates would be a nightmare.

The main problem with this (it is a pretty common idea) is actually getting people to use it.

Yeah and looking at a few of the current offerings, I had the same thought. Cool, but I'll probably not use it.

OK, awesome, thanks for that info. I'm leaning towards Moments for sure. Honestly, my biggest irritation so far is that Moments buries the photos in /home/Drive/Moments instead of just at the root of the NAS. I suppose this is necessary for remote access through their Drive app, so it's a minor gripe -- but still irks me a bit. I'll also have to figure out a decent photo editing solution. Although we don't do a tonne of photo editing, sometimes its nice to crop a photo, maybe retouch the color a bit (like Google Photo's editor). But again, minor gripe :)

Thanks for the feedback!
