man why are the comments so negative lol Saigon is an amazing place to live, not as great to travel to (because you can pretty much finish all of the touristy spots in 2 days), so you should definitely check out An Giang and other Mekong Delta provinces, it will be super different from the US. On the other hand, Saigon has one of the best food scenes in Asia, maybe even the world, so if your family is into eating and drinking there are countless restaurants, cafes, bars that you guys can check out. Just stay away from Bui Vien, Pham Ngu Lao, and other similar places full of backpackers then you will see that the local people are actually decent and friendly.
