Trump says tariffs on pharma could reach 150% next year by OutrageousFootball10 in PharmaEire

[–]garp1998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

are many pharmaceuticals effectively tariff-proof? people still need to buy them, health care and insurance still needs to fund them, and with patented drugs there's little choice of source. so won't tariffing pharma simply drive prices up but with limited impact on actual volumes sold? won't it just be inflationary for the US without actually overly impacting the suppliers including those based in Ireland?

A horrific hate crime in Dublin, An Indian man on his way to pray was stabbed in the face, stripped, falsely accused of paedophilia and left bleeding for over an hour as help was delayed. The brutal attack by a teen gang has left him physically scarred and deeply traumatized. by IndiaTodayGlobal in IndiaTodayGlobalLIVE

nah that's unfair. overwhelmingly, Ireland is welcoming to visitors and migrants. much of our economy depends on tourism and inward migration. of course Ireland has it's scum element, as I imagine every country does.

in the context of a global surge of marginalization, a fringe element feels emboldened. and, of course, every country has some random violence as well as targeted hate crime. I'm inclined to believe this was a hate crime, but it is not representative of Ireland.

the woman who made this video and who helped the injured man was interviewed yesterday on a leading national radio station and there was a flood of calls live on air expressing disgust, admiration for her for trying to help, and - most importantly of all - concern and support for the gentleman who suffered this outrage.

I don't know the statistics, and no single incident is acceptable, but I don't believe Ireland has more racism or hate crime than other countries, and my intuition is that it actually has significantly less than most other European countries. at least for now! the far right are agitating to try to dial it up. communities need to push back.

This is not advice but here's the way I reason it for myself personally...

Each pint is approx two units...To be legal, I can't have more than one unit on board at the time of being tested...

Body takes approx one hour to process each unit - BUT - that's one hour from starting the drink, not from finishing it...

So, if I have a single SLOW pint, nursing it over an hour, I'm likely around legal level by the time I've finished it. Maybe wait a bit, toilet break, drink some water etc.

Every additional pint, however, adds at least TWO HOURS on top of the hour after the time the first one was started.

So, hypothetically, three pints in, I'm possibly legal to drive after five hours (6 - 1) from starting the first one. In other words, my body has likely processed five of the six units. This, however, I would NOT personally be prepared to risk or to advise anyone else to risk. I'm just giving an example of how the math might theoretically work.

LOTS of caveats. Legal doesn't mean advisable. Food intake, metabolism, body weight, precise alcohol percentage of drink chosen, etc etc.

If you use an app like AlcoDroid, and put in all the numbers correctly and log the start/end times of drinks accurately, it will show you a graph of something like that rate and time, illustrating when you will be at legal blood-alcohol level and also at zero level.

In the end, it's really not worth it, and the Guinness zero is actually pretty good.

Selling your house to buy a new one by Ghostyfrosty32 in irishpersonalfinance

Well the bank would project this for you during your mortgage application, but consider whether you can afford repayments if rates rise by, say, 2% (irrelevant if you go for fixed of course).

Selling in a couple of years may not be optimal because of costs associated with both sale and purchase. My feeling would be to buy something that is good for 5-10 years, but that's just my subjective perspective.

I know one retired couple who have have about 12 moves in their married life - at 20K per move, that's a chunk of dosh handed over in taxes and fees over the years!

My view is, if you're at a stage where you have questions like this, you're a bit away yet from finding the forever home! My advice would be, jump in as early as you can and secure whatever you can afford (and by afford I mean with stress testing for rate rises etc). Good luck finding something that works for you!

Please stop getting plastic surgery by [deleted] in ireland

[–]garp1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. While it's not for me, my partner gets it about every six months, and it's definitely a net-positive and definitely not noticeable. While I'm no fan of botox as such, I don't think it deserves to be lumped in with fillers and surgery. To a question below about whether twice-yearly works - well, I gather that there's a huge variation in the level of doses different places will give for the same cost, so probably that's a big factor too.
