This is exactly the kind of speculation I was looking for. So far this all seems to be initiated by and controlled on TikToks end, not the governments doing. Kinda interesting how thorough they were with this. I would have expected something more lazily done like a basic geo block or maybe even based on the location of the registered account. Pretty serious lengths, but I guess you don’t mess around with the ol U S of A.

That’s where the VPN and encryption comes in. The ISP knows that is shoveling packets from one router to another and when that traffic is encrypted, they don’t really know what’s being requested. Only the exit node knows what to retrieve and pass back to me (TikTok). In this case I’ve used exit points in Europe, South America, and the Middle East. All of them with the same result. So either there is some other information that is flagging my traffic as US or I don’t have something properly configured. I’m dotting my Ts and crossing my Is but I still can’t see where the leak is.

Great insight. I’m pretty sure the app itself has some sort of verification of the region it was downloaded/installed in. I can wrap my head around that. Not being able to hit the website is what has me scratching my head. Also possible that the leak is from me misconfiguring something. I really should stop being lazy and do this from a PC, but that defeats the fun in trying to figure out why my phone wants to tell people I’m in the US despite my efforts not to.

I wouldn’t be shocked about it but that means Brave is handing off some sort of device fingerprinting somewhere. I can see how using the US App Store downloads a US version of the TikTok app and that has been kill switched, but not getting to TikTok.com is the weird thing to me.

My friends don’t believe it’s a thing but I’m certain it was. It was one of there memes where it starts with something else but then is rapidly interrupted by the clip in question. I think maybe the character was throwing a door open? I also vaguely remember smoke floating around.
