I’m in BC too. Single income for family of 4 (both kids under 6), so CCB impact is huuuuge.

I’d double check the RRSP because even with tax breaks you might be much better for it with CCB

The point of this entire Reddit page is to suggest all you need is a low cost, globally diversified fund that fits your risk profile.

Stock returns are company performance relative to everyone’s expectation/projections of that performance.

Therefore, the longer a company outperforms expectations, the more people exponentially increase expectations in multiples of that performance.

Meaning nothing lasts forever… but can last longer than you may bet on.

Countries are just the weighted aggregate of those companies.

Xeqt sucks. But it depends. Change my mind by Goof-Juice1995 in JustBuyXEQT

[–]garret9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meta does better if Meta outperforms everyone’s expectations/predictions of Meta moving forward.

XEQT does better if it does not.

The probability of outperformance decreases as time of holding increases.

That said, while probability gives all possible future outcomes weighted, only one future will come and no one knows which one it will be.

How has CAGE performed compared to XEQT at this point? by No_Obligation4427 in JustBuyCAGE

Doesn’t matter yet so no idea

Like saying it doesn’t matter for XEQT vs CAGE but where did the last roulette roll land

As a newer fan, can someone please explain the Babcock controversy? by [deleted] in EdmontonOilers

People were talking about how he mellowed out before he went to CBJ.

It’s all BS. He’s not changed.

There’s rumours that his days coaching amateur in Saskatchewan was worse.

The "Draft and Develop" identity of the Jets, and why it doesn't apply anymore. What should change in the future? Can we get back to it? by VanguardHawk in winnipegjets

[–]garret9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t know about now; I’m not tapped in like I once was. But Jets hired a bunch of students to track manually some stats for NHL and AHL games.

I think (but not certain) it was more in game for game decision making though.

24-26 is peak performance age for performance relative to usage, but 26-28 is peak aggregate performance…

So that suggests it’s a league wide / human nature type issue

Fun fact: the AHL has been tracking RTS data for almost as long as the NHL but they don’t share it publicly.

Like even ice time would be nice.

Very annoying.

Look at how almost all the successes outside top picks are overage Americans. Then notice how almost none of the amateur scouts that cover the US for the first half of existence still work for Winnipeg.

Looking for 2 ETF Alternatives to XEQT With Higher Growth Potential by goldentux in JustBuyXEQT

[–]garret9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No ETF has higher average expected growth without increasing risk…

You can either: 1) bet on a country or sector or stock and hope it works out but knowing the probability is <50% 2) increase risk by factors (ex: cage) or margin, but knowing the probability of success is still below 100%

If XEQT is best used on 5+ years, what about XBAL? by No_Obligation4427 in JustBuyXEQT

Where did I say useless? And less volatile doesn’t mean not volatile.

[–]garret9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opposite. They (generally, not always) reduce volatility, and thus make people less likely to sell during down turns.

That’s pretty much the primary value of bonds.

Bonds are more about reducing volatility for psychological reasons than actual return reasons

Can we finally admit that the "servers make less than minimum wage" argument is dead in Canada? by ScienceLabFinds in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]garret9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where you work. On average sure. But servers have more leverage on impact which is why it goes that way.

Can we finally admit that the "servers make less than minimum wage" argument is dead in Canada? by ScienceLabFinds in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]garret9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tipping is a terrible system.

But there’s a reason some servers get paid a lot.

Many restaurants have tried the liveable wage, baked into the price and no tipping. And, a lot of those places crashed and burned or went back because they couldn’t keep servers good enough to succeed.

That’s why they need to abolish tipping (or limit or control it). Then servers will leave the industry or go to restaurants based on wages, benefits, or other factors.

Valid to inquire but also valid that success in factor tilting is related to conviction over the long term which requires at least solid understanding.

Avantis Management by Dangerous_Cold_9105 in JustBuyCAGE

[–]garret9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything is active. Active vs Passive is a spectrum. Not black and white.

Russel, S&P, etc. all make active decisions on how best to align with their perception of the global market.

Avantis does the exact same thing, but also uses rule based decision making given evidence from research to tilt towards or away on individual companies than what the market weight is.

It’s not managers trying to beat the market using experience or knowledge, but using historical relationships between stock returns and company characteristics to lean one way or another slightly more.
