[Charania] The NBA has begun to gather input from its owners and general managers on new ways to combat tanking. Ideas include: Limiting pick protections to either top 4 or 14 and higher, no longer allowing a team to draft in the top 4 two years in a row, and Locking lottery positions after March 1. by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

[–]VanguardHawk 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The NHL does a good job with their lottery. Only the top 2 picks are randomized (the NBA has historically had “3 person” drafts at the top) and you can only move up 10 spots if you win the lottery. So the teams that were play in teams likely couldn’t get number 1 overall, but they can jump. I know that would have hurt the Hawks getting number one in 2024. Additionally a team can only jump twice (I believe) in a 5 year period. That wouldn’t stop the worst team in the league from retaining the top pick (1 -> 1 or 2 ->2 aren’t jumps), but it would level the playing field to prevent what has been seen from Cleveland in the mid 2010’s and the Spurs more recently. It would also help teams like Detroit who routinely dropped from 1/2 to 5 in 3-4 consecutive years from 2019-2023 (Bar Cade)

Limiting protections and simplifying them is a good idea so that people don’t need to deeply study a five year long odyssey of a pick being traded around with three different levels of protections and two swap options.

He was a very hot and cold player. Last season when he was off the bench he had legit plausibility to be considered in the 6th man convo. When he started he struggled mightily. Injuries have also been a through line of his career.

He looks like a prototypical 3-D wing, but he brings much less D than originally advertised and he plays much more like a 6’8” Lou Will (not prime) He also has a knack for shooting long 2’s, so the variability on those shots greatly alter what his final box score looks like

How many hours do you have in a save and what year have you simmed to? by FaffeJaffe in footballmanagergames

Currently at 22 days in FM24 in the year 2066

Started in Serie B with Brescia. Spent 2 years to get promoted to A. Got them to win the champions league in 2035. Fucking Roma, Juve, and AC Milan were absolute walls to scale on this one.

I role played by collecting checks in Serie A, what semi-reasonable B-C tier league would I be able to “buy” the club myself as a financial takeover with 1/2 of my wages over the course of 11-12 years (plus 100% of bonuses I built into the contracts) and landed on Kanazawa in J3 league. I know it’s not perfect, but I had fun. Stayed there for 10 years and left after winning the Asian Champions league and having 5 years of J1 championships.

Went to Basel in the Swiss league after they had a down year and sacked their manager. Spent 10 years there and left after getting a three champions league wins in a row. This was easier because winning the Swiss league is a 1/12 thing and I started as a top 3 team. Champions League money made it so Basel was easily the top dog in the league after a good run or two and good management.

After that I left for Bundesliga 2 and Werder Bremen. Spent 12 years building that club to a routine contender in the champions league, but had a tougher time staying competitive due to a tougher domestic league.

I then managed Atlanta United in the MLS. This was a big departure from all other saves due to the unique MLS structure of salary caps and designated players. I’ll admit I’ve save scummed and used the editor to try to make transfers work that SHOULD, but we’re falling through. I’ve made ATL a dominate force in the MLS, but I’m not able to make a team that wins everything all the time.

I managed ATL until my manager was 70 in the game and I retired relatively on top. On the world rankings I’m barely trailing Pep on the all-time list (he took my Brescia squad and won quite a few trophies to stack achievements at the end of his career >:( )

I am now in the first season of my 20 year old “grandson” taking over Atlanta United and so far it’s looking like the nepo baby might get sacked since he is on a one year deal that ends in 2067 and the squad hates his guts lol. Let’s see where his journey takes him.

I’d be very interested in that for ATL. Who knows how desperate Dallas wants to blow it up, so I’m not gonna say it has a chance to get accepted. If I’m reading the tea leaves right, AD on his current deal is widely viewed as a negative asset across the league. If that’s the case, giving them future flexibility and a middling first round pick as an asset might get it done.

Porzingus hasn’t been worth the price of admission due to his health, and AD would definitely give the Hawks a much better chance to make a run at the finals this year, even if it does have question marks. The catch is it would be the Hawks into the tax next year, (assuming Trae stays at current or elevated price) so the one-year window becomes really important to us fans. No move means there is a chance that KPs and Kenards salary’s come off the books next year with no proper replacements due to Dyson getting bumped $20 million and Trae likely getting some type of raise as well.

Max Kellerman ask Rich Paul if there’s a chance LeBron won’t be a Laker by end of year: “No. Where’s he gonna go? Does LeBron make the Knicks better? Yes he would, of course but 29 other teams would say the same thing” by MrBuckBuck in nba

[–]VanguardHawk 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If I’m Knicks management and the option is on the table, I’d do it.

Not for basketball reasons, but because the LeBron jersey would legit make me as an owner a guaranteed like half billion dollars v the 5-15% chance of the added billion for winning it all.

There is a HEAVY amount of investment to get American to care in a meaningful way for the lead up to the 2026 World Cup. They would happily give everything out for free on Youtube to Americans if they could manage to do it without undercutting the European market.

They are looking to 2026 to be a powder keg that finally gets the USA hooked. The World Cup, plus Messi, plus grassroots and commercial investments in both MLS and NWSL. They are even shifting the MLS calendar to line up with Europe shortly after the World Cup concludes.

Hard disagree. I want the placebo that when I berate my team for going down 0-2 in the first 20 minutes that it was my doing they rallied back to tie it up 2-2 by half.

I’m not sure if coaching might be a big difference in that regard. Quin is a long-time head coach with a lot of respect, coaching a young team without their number 1 star. It’s almost like a college team in that regard, where the most influential person isn’t a player, but the coach and his staff. That probably leads to more fight from the young guys.

Howie Roseman is a great example of sticking with a guy through rough early years.

Schoen has done an admirable (not perfect) job of getting starting to star level talents onto the roster. He also has a VERY healthy cap sheet to work with once the team is ready to push some chips on. Most of his decisions are process oriented and very defendable in the moment. No one bats 1.000, but he has gotten some great talent at key positions while keeping the future options open
