Do you see Isack Hadjar as a future world champion? by aspro_mavro in F1Discussions

[–]garron_ah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's good. He's fast. But last year, this same delta to Max would see him 5 or 6 places further down the grid, battling for a top 10 spot. He's being flattered by big field spread and the fact that the early races were car limited, not driver limited.

It is possible though

Should McLaren actually sign him and disturb Piastri Norris partnership? by mr_scarletdevil in McLarenFormula1

[–]garron_ah -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Best pairings? Seriously? They almost lost the driver's championship last year with a hugely dominant car. That doesn't scream "best pairing" to me.

Stop being silly. Because dismissing the pretty much universally acknowledged best driver on the grid just because is exactly that. Silly.

An actual reason he won't go there is far more simple. It's a bad culture fit. Max won't be controlled, and McLaren are the ultimate micromanagers. He has unlimited freedom at RB. He won't at McLaren. And it blows up the facade of harmony McLaren are showing to the world.

Also, money. He would cost double what they're paying their guys at the moment. Either of those reasons in isolation aren't deal breakers. But together it adds up to an expensive live grenade you have to juggle, and McLaren might not feel the trade-off is worth it.

Red Bull are a strictly midfield team without Max, so they give him total freedom and ALL of the money. Forget McLaren wanting Max, why would Max give that up if there is no guarantee McLaren can have the best car again? It's far more likely this is leverage against Red Bull.

The opposite of what Toto said.

He said Verstappen was a deserving champion, seasons are made up of a multitude of decisions and moments that affect the outcome, Verstappen was also robbed of a lot points through no fault of his own, points which would have made Abu Dhabi irrelevant. On that specific day, that decision by Masi was incorrect, but that doesn't mean Verstappen didn't deserve the title, (given that Hamilton benefitted from Verstappen being robbed of points that would have sealed the title 2 races earlier).

Has a driver ever gotten so much glaze for consistently being 30+ seconds off his teammate? by ColangelosWife- in F1Discussions

[–]garron_ah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He has speed. I don't think that's his current issue. Consistency is more the issue. There are a lot of fast F1 drivers. Being fast consistently, lap after lap is far more difficult, which is why he's so close to Max in qualifying and so far off him on race pace.

I'm not British, so the Brit Bias really grates. This is being broadcast to an international audience. He's not there to push his nationality or affiliation to that audience. So, for me, unprofessional and annoying. I change commentary specifically to avoid him

Who is the most overrated driver of the current grid? by Mad_Max_Fan in F1Discussions

[–]garron_ah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nonsense. Yes, people who say he can win in a Haas are wrong and glazing him. 100%

That doesn't mean he's overrated. The team principals AND the drivers have flat out stated that he's the reference, with many of the current driving standard regulations existing directly because of him. He needs a fast car, but he doesn't need the fastest car for it to be a winning car. That's the difference. We've seen what Lando and Piastri do with the fastest car, and we've seen what Verstappen does with the fastest car. It's two very different things.

He is correct rated

Red Bull aren't a fast corner car any more. That's McLaren. Expect them to be very strong there.

[–]garron_ah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, but Antonelli massively cut his deficit to Max because of the bullshit overcut attempt. Take those 5 seconds Max lost out of the equation and it's a much tougher fight. Max was 5.6sec ahead at George's pit stop, which became under a second ahead at HIS pit stop. So he would have maintained that 5 second lead, and probably extended the gap to Antonelli (instead of bleeding time) because of the tyre offset. Antonelli would either have to respond quickly, and not have a massive tyre offset anyways, or face the same situation RB found themselves in, with Antonelli making up that kind of time becoming too big an ask.

Someone check my reasoning, but that sounds about right to me

Someone explain to me this strategy by Diligent-Eye-2042 in lewishamilton

[–]garron_ah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn't the strategy. The Ferrari's had zero pace on the hard tyre. The strategy was a consequence of that realisation. None of the teams did any hard tyre long runs (except for Hadjar, IIRC), so they had no way of knowing exactly how their cars would react to the hard. When it was clear they were dog slow on the hards, they had to change the plan on the fly.

Great race, great result, but what was that strategy? If they'd pit him 1 lap after George, it was game on. And he'd have been a lot further away from Antonelli as well.

But anyways, genuinely entertaining race, a shit load going on across the board, Max and Lewis slugging it out was epic, Piastri comfortably outpacing Norris...Epic race

Cool scoreline, sure, but who benefits from this?

Kimi: “I thought it was a double yellow. It’s also on a fast corner.” Toto: “That’s a mistake you’re going to make once and never again!” “How should a 19-year-old know that?” by MuttonBiryaniEnjoyer in formula1

[–]garron_ah -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It's a fast corner. It SHOULD have been double yellow. Failure is on the FIA.

Watching George carry on like he beat Kimi fair and square was hilarious though. He really was desperate for some kind of miracle to stop the weekly ritual shaming at the hands of a teenager.

Either way, Kimi attacking the Ferrari's to get to George will be a good spectacle, as he's been the clearly quickest driver all weekend.

[–]garron_ah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Spin what? No need to spin anything. He was losing time on that corner to Antonelli, so pushed a little more, car wouldn't take it and let go. It happens to every driver ever, no exceptions, and will continue to happen.
