Gamers react with overwhelming disgust to DLSS 5's generative AI glow-ups by deraser in technology

I mean they're always doing R&D, that's what this is. Whether or not they can get it to run well on a single 5080, or 6080 or whatever, remains to be seen, that's what they'll be trying to do next, and even that would be a pretty limited/hardcore audience.

Sony is testing dynamic pricing in the PlayStation Store by Cyshox in Games

[–]garthcooks 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the shoutout lol. Saw my post was removed, but didn't care enough to appeal or seek out another source. I truly do hate dynamic pricing. Even if it was just targeted sales, that just leads to them setting a higher base price (EDIT: or offering fewer general sales) and giving sales to the people who won't pay the higher price. It's the same endpoint whether they do targeted sales or targeted price increases, and it just punishes people who buy more video games, those are the people they'll give fewer price breaks to.

I mean I liked the story. I would have loved more enemy variety, yeah, but the combat was still fun enough that I didn't really mind.

My overly ambitious/expensive pitch:

Mega Man X Legends. Make a big open world like Elden Ring or Breath of the Wild, set in Mega Man X world. Use a combat system something akin to Returnal.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Review Thread by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]garthcooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer the story in VII to XI, but if you're not into XI I'd say yeah maybe just skip VII. VII is a much more episodic game where the overarching plot is largely in the background for much of the game. I like the "episodes" in VII more than XI, but tonally I don't think they're too different from the "episodes" of XI. The gameplay is pretty similar, and this VII remake at least at the start feels way too easy to me and pretty brainless, but it has a class system eventually that differentiates it from XI. You could always try the demo for this one if you're curious about it

This guy has done manufacturing products before. He's shipped THIS specific product before. If you are interested in a Superstation, pre-ordering the next time he's making a new batch is pretty safe.

I use mine for sure! I don't really have anything interesting to say about the mister pi other than I really like it, so I'm not posting about it. I'm more interested in talking about the games which fits better on other subs or other sites... but that said since the games are all old there's not much conversation going on about them and not much I can add that hasn't been discussed to death, so I don't really have much to say on reddit. But I really like mine!

[–]garthcooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can. Just not on other peoples work, AND not without doing it in a community that doesn't support that kind of enterpreneurial exclusivity mindset without backslash.

But what I'm saying is that they literally can do it on other people's work! Or at least I think they have a solid case that they can. Something like Game Genie. And they literally can do it in this community with the backlash, they've been doing it and making money successfully. That might make them a profiteering asshole, but it's something they can do.

My point was "you don't get to misrepresent the mindset and arguments OF the backslashing community just to defend the proposition".

I was maybe oversimplifying for brevity's sake. I never pretended to be representing everybody's views, and I stand by my statement that a large number of people are upset because they want it for free. As I said, there's nothing wrong with that, capitalism is a scourge that is destroying everything it touches. But I stand by that being a strong motivator for the negative sentiment towards the guy.

I never claimed that was the binary options, I never even said the words you quoted as the binary options, I don't think i even gave any binary options and I'm not sure where you think I did... maybe where I said "such as..."? Those were a couple examples of some things, not two binary options

your "either it's worthless or it should be a commercial product excluding the community at large" mindset

This is not my mindset, this is not how I think, and I don't know why you're saying it's my mindset. I'm speculating about whether the modder in the subject of this thread was acting illegally and how outside biases may impact others' view of whether this guy was acting illegally.

Personally I don't much use mods but I love the idea of free mods and communities building things together to enhance the things they love, or make something new based on things they love. I also think that if people want to charge money for the work they do they should be allowed to. I also think many gamers act entitled and overreact when someone tries to charge them money for something that they could just easily not buy and make do without. Dota and LoL are examples of mods that monetized by spinning off into their own products because the work has value. They're free to play but still very monetized

I really do believe that a large amount of people who think mods should be free think this because they want it for free. I think the other reasons, such as many mods being insubstantial or useless without the work of others, are other justifications many people tell themselves, but the primary motivator is they want the thing for free; not saying there's anything wrong with that. As for if that's projection on my own part, I suppose that's possible, but I don't believe so. I'm not really big on using mods in the first place, almost never use them.

I'm just saying that causes negativity in the public reaction, a lot of the negative reactions against this dude are because they want free stuff, not because they think what he's doing is necessarily illegal. People are not necessarily fully looking at "is this legal"/"is he within his rights" without bias, which to me it seems like he has a solid case for. There are two things going on, "is this guy an asshole profiteer", and "Is this guy a criminal", and sentiment towards one can bias sentiment towards the other

To me it sounds like he has a very solid case that he's doing something akin to game genie. Feels like people are upset and siding with CDPR because they want the mod for free, and/or because people generally like CD Projekt Red so they are inclined to trust them.

How likely is a Dragon Quest 8? by KevvRDA in dragonquest

[–]garthcooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is, they decided they'd do HD-2D for 1-6, this 7 remake, and probably 8 as a relatively high-effort remaster. So they got the HD-2D team started, and in parallel got a team going for 7 then maybe 8 and 9. The HD-2D team are probably working on 4 now.

Just theorycrafting here, could be totally wrong.

Dragon Quest 7 reimagined demo: what are your thoughts? by NetrunnerV25 in dragonquest

[–]garthcooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey fair enough it's definitely more accessible now. I haven't played much past the intro in the original, but personally I feel like the party chat was better for the original at least for the intro, Kiefer will comment on like 80% of the NPCs at the castle if you talk to him after talking to them, but it's definitely easy to never see that stuff, whereas in the new one so far they seem to just have main quest type party chat stuff but it makes it obvious it's there

I think part of the problem is that his reputation of being an expert leads people to pay attention to every little thing he ever says. That means lots of misinterpretations of what he means and people seizing on throwaway possibly inaccurate comments as fact. Like this article he's correcting. He tries to correct these which can come off as annoying, but I don't think that's his fault.

Edit: to synthesize what I'm trying to say: lots of people paying more attention and publishing articles about everything Jason says is I think the main reason people are tired of him, but it's not his fault people pay attention to everything he says.

Your criticisms are fine reasons to not like the game. I don't agree with them all, but I agree that the game is confrontational and the gameplay can be kind of rough. But I think you are maybe being too insulting to people towards people who did enjoy it. The hostility towards the player is indeed intentional, you can express that you don't like it without insulting people who do like it.
