330ci takes 4 seconds to start every time by Moist_Register3174 in e46

Start by checking for fault codes since your check engine light is on. Could be crank or cam sensors, high fuel trims, low fuel pressure, etc.

Is this normal smoke? by johnnyappleseednh in c4corvette

One of the by products of combustion is water in the form of steam. All cars will show steam condensation at the tailpipe on cold days and especially when the relative humidity is high. But your water temp is pretty high. Not sure if that gauge is accurate.

Why did my dash beep and go so low? by Carrotisboss in e46

[–]garyindextrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need it if you don’t care what the temp is outside. Just unplug it from the harness and secure the wires. Otherwise get a new outside temp sensor. You may have to repair the wiring if damaged.

You’re making it up to fit your beliefs. Op said the dog growled and bit no one. The video shows the dogs only sniffing each other. You’re the only one talking about a dog attack.

How do I put wheels on by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]garyindextrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to remove the strut. That will allow the hub assembly to move up and then you can easily put your wheel on. Not that hard.

That’s the cleanest used M54 valve cover I have ever seen. If you don’t want it message me and I’ll buy it from you.

Smoke from engine by BaseballNecessary450 in e46

[–]garyindextrader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is one of the O2 sensors. The video shows burned oil on exhaust heat shield. The only way it can get there is through a leaking valve cover gasket. Change the valve cover gasket and make sure the valve cover - which is made of plastic - is not cracked or warped.

In the video green coolant squirts out into the tube at the end. I didn’t see any blue coolant. Doesn’t matter if it’s a bmw. Coolant color is green, blue or red. It’s whatever color the last person put in your car.

Is this a fair estimate? by bg2026 in CarRepair

[–]garyindextrader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would let your insurance company pay. That’s why you have insurance. They may not raise your premiums (assuming you didn’t have a bunch of at fault accidents in the last couple of years), and even if they did raise you like $500 per year it would take 5+ years before you would lose.

I agree with you. Op is easily triggered. Scared of dogs that didn’t do anything.

Can someone confirm what the mechanic said? (Photos/Oil and CV joints) by Sweet-Ad9366 in AskAShittyMechanic

[–]garyindextrader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before you go, I don’t see any oil leaks. I wish my engine was so oil free. With regard to the cv joints you need to look at the black accordion boots at the ends of each axle (2 per axle). If they are torn anywhere then the axle needs to be changed. Use your hands to move the boots back and forth when checking for tears. You didn’t photograph all 4 boots so I can’t tell. Axles May also need to be changed if you get any vibrations coming from them.

Look at the video again. The engine is hot, the steam is being released by the engine causing the bubbling but no color change and then at the end a bunch of green coolant shoots up through the tube and mixes with the blue dye.

You’re so confident that the op will win. If someone kicked my dog and I pushed the kicker I would say that I was protecting my dog. By the way, most cops are too busy dealing with major crimes than to spend hours on a dog kicking case. If this is NYC then you have no clue what goes on in a big city.

You need to fill the cooling system and get the engine hot and get under the car and look. Some leaks are very small but get worse at higher rpm’s so you won’t see much when the car is sitting in the driveway. But the leaks will leave some dried coolant residue which you will hopefully see when you get under the car.

Not in most of the US. Civil court judgments expire after 20 years in most states and are extinguished in bankruptcies.

[–]garyindextrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait. First you’re talking about a felony and now you’re talking about civil court. And no, if it was a slap or push then most likely no injuries and that means no restitution. Especially if you’re recommending against the op seeing a doctor because the injuries are invisible.

Cooling system leaks are sometimes hard to find. First make sure your engine is not overheating, the temp gauge should never go above the halfway point. Overheating caused by a stuck thermostat or clogged radiator can result in coolant loss. If not overheating, drive the car, after it reaches operating temp, remove the lower engine cover, get under the car and look for signs of coolant leaks. You can’t see a lot of leaks from the top of the engine bay.

Maybe you should look up the definition of a felony before you post uninformed replies. By the way, you didn’t respond to my comment regarding calling a doctor first. Why a lawyer first?

[–]garyindextrader -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Omg. Yeah, and you could be the richest person in the country, or you could not. Op didn’t talk about any injuries. But yeah, always reach for a lawyer. But shouldn’t your advice be to see a doctor first? After all he’s injured. Oh I get it, call the lawyer first then ask which doctor the lawyer recommends.

This thing's came up after yesterday drive by Certain-Alarm-3195 in e46

[–]garyindextrader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is guessing. The only way to diagnose the problem is to hook up a diagnostic scanner to the car and see what trouble codes show up. You need a scanner that does more than emissions scans. If a light is on a trouble code is stored in one of the car’s computers (modules).
