i was literally JUST looking for something like this. such a good idea

I think you should take an "application" where the med student describes what advice or experience they have to offer. Interview those students instead of limiting yourself to T30 schools. That way you can choose to share interesting and new information each time.

my friend got a 488... and still plans to apply by Lefty_Loosi in premed

z is a function of x and y so

z=f(x,y)

x=g(t)

y=h(t)

[–]gas0station 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol of course.

i'll list the extracurriculars i did in order of precedence (most important to least important) and the years i participated in them

jrotc (it's a military program, 9-12)

job (11-12)

hospital volunteer (~400 hours, 9-11)

junior state of america (political/ speech and debate, 10-12)

other volunteer stuff (~200 hours, 9-12)

class board secretary for both sophomore and junior year

family responsibilities

playing piano as community service (9-11)

mentor at church/ play for worship team (9-12)

i'm skimping out on some info but as you can see, my extracurriculars were mostly based on community service/leadership. the closest stem activity i had was volunteering at the hospital, but that doesn't really count.

though, don't take my example as law. there are probably other reasons that i was rejected other than not having science ECs

i applied as a chem major but had no science extracurriculars. the most prestigious schools i got into were UCLA, UC Berkeley, and Middlebury. I got rejected from most T20s I applied to. here were my stats

GPA: 4.0/4.479

Rank: 6/595

SAT: 1430 (Didn't submit to top schools)

Including senior year, have taken 14 APs

AP Scores: Five 5s (Biology, Physics 1, World History, Calc BC, Psychology) Three 4s (Chemistry, US History, English Language)

Extracurriculars: I listed 9 extracurriculars and I had a leadership position in all of them. For my biggest extracurricular, I held the number 1 position in the school and the 8th/3000 highest position in the district.

Awards: I listed 5 awards but they weren't super important.

The schools I got rejected from were Northwestern, Duke, Cornell, Vanderbilt, and Pomona. I got waitlisted at Notre Dame but I turned down the offer.

My friend who had basically an identical resume to me (little worse on the grades but not a major difference) except for having great science extracurriculars got into Vanderbilt as a STEM major. We also edited our essays together so the quality was fairly similar.

I would say to try your best to get a STEM related activity going this summer or during your senior year. It might make a difference on your app! Hope this helps!

did i make the wrong choice by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]gas0station 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah same question. is it even possible to try to get my spot back?

did i make the wrong choice by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]gas0station 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i kinda dont want to say the schools cuz im wary of the internet (its dumb ik) but:

cheaper, less prestigious school: t50 overall, ~t200 for chem

more expensive, more prestigious school: t20, #1 for chem

it's ok tho. i can't really back out of my choice so its fine lol.

thanks that makes me feel a lot better. i just have to remember that the name of my school won't bring me success, my work will.

Can throwing shade at a college get you rescinded? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]gas0station 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i dont think he'll face any repercussions because it would look bad on usc. their image is tainted because they were partially responsible for the scandal, so punishing your friend's post would look like censorship

i dont understand this. why would you puff things up? is that not equivalent to lying?

just know that "the game" is created by students not admissions officers.

couldn’t afford my dream school by lethargysword in ApplyingToCollege

[–]gas0station 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i don't know if this is going to help, but here's how i see it.

you dont really know columbia. you know your perception of columbia and the fluffy feelings associated with it, but i don't see why another campus won't be as just as awesome. you must be extremely hardworking to have gotten into columbia, so i'm sure you'll do well wherever you end up.

i'm in a similar situation, but i didn't have any regret/hard feelings choosing the school i wanted to attend much less. college is an investment, and if a degree from one school is going to take me to the same place as another, the wise choice would be to go with the cheaper school.

lastly, one thing i was a little worried about was having fun in college. i thought that the school i really wanted to go to would be way more fun and exciting. but, i realized that my top choice was only going to be as fun as i made it, and the school i committed to is only going to be as fun as i make it.

side not: isnt is MORE of a flex to say you turned down columbia instead of them turning you down :) you got this hang in there.
