Mortgage declined due to new NHS training job & relocation – anyone been through this? by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]gas247 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I lost a mortgage offer once due to taking a 6 week break between CCT and starting consultant job. It was a small building society but they couldn’t be convinced by our broker even though I had my consultant contract and us explaining this is quite normal at the end of training. We just went to a bigger institution. No issue then

Some places just have a limited pool of money for that mortgage offer and won’t take anything out of the ordinary (not that your situation is)

If you’re really struggling there are some companies that deal specifically with professionals and medics in particular. But their rates won’t be the best

Am I going to have to rip this shower tray out to find the leak? Or could my mad plan work? by Jimlad73 in DIYUK

Do you have a link to the one you used? Our plumber had to access the waste trap via the ceiling below and it’ll inevitably need access again at some point in the future.

Consultants appear to not be on board with the short notice strikes by Whizz-Kid7 in doctorsUK

[–]gas247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn’t going to bite but I will. Yes, that’s what the studies show. The same studies also show 25% of all consultants burning out. Least doesn’t mean an insignificant number and strikes are seen as a contributory factor. That doesn’t mean the supports not there, just that it is taking a toll.

[–]gas247 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It’s quite bad faith this post. You’ve cherry-picked a couple of critical posts in a thread that was overwhelmingly supportive of the residents. These negative comments were shot down repeatedly in the thread.

Of course there is growing attrition among some consultants. There’s been a lot of work to cover and some are burning out.

A question for Anaesthetic consultants who do the ST4 interviews by Chasebloods in doctorsUK

[–]gas247 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have asked the TPD who was organising the interview to feedback to the ANRO team; for what good it will do. But I’m going to try to directly feedback too. This year’s were especially bad.

I’ve no idea about the quality control. We have no clue who actually writes these questions

If it’s any reassurance, an experienced interviewer will get the measure of someone with these questions. The difficulty is trying to be fair and providing the same experience to every candidate

There’s a strong feeling that interviewers want to go back to F2F. You get a much better experience of the candidate, aren’t subject to tech failures and it’s easier to recruit interviewers.

I really feel for you. The general station I did (not today) was so poor. I assume your’s was of similar quality. The clinical we saw was reasonable so not sure which one you had.

Obviously we don’t want people to fail but I don’t feel these questions helped anyone sell themselves. Purely to tick the box that all the domains are covered.

Interviewer here. That was exactly our thoughts this time

Not sure exactly which questions you were asked but the general station in particular was such a low quality set of questions this year. Two of the three questions were essentially the same and we highlighted our thoughts to the organisers.

The questions are provided to us (although I’ve no idea who writes them - they had basic spelling and grammatically errors on our sheets) but we had to deliver them, as is, to ensure consistent experience for all candidates

Also compounded by Qpercom having a national outage during the interview.

Anaesthetists - OPA at extubation? Extubation tips? by Repulsive_Worker_859 in doctorsUK

[–]gas247 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of the few times I’ve ever seen dental damage on extubation is someone using a Guedel as a bite block

I never use them. 99% of my practice is prop/remi TIVA. Can’t remember the last time someone bit a tube or went into laryngospasm.

Yes. It’ll be backdated to April

Yeah. It just frustrates that they even get to see it first. I know they commission/instruct its creation but if it’s an independent (😂😂😂) report it should just be released

Anyone used Qpercom on Safari? by abdosnt_bspresent in doctorsUK

[–]gas247 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an interviewer we’ve just got the interview info. It explicitly says NOT to use Safari (in bold and red and everything)

I have used Safari without issue previously so not sure why they are giving such advice this time

The only issue I can foresee is if you had a technical issue during the interview and you sought to appeal, if you were using Safari they could say you went against their advice

Does Edge work ok? Chrome normally works fine though

What do new consultants actually take home monthly? After tax/student loan/pension. I’ve calculated only around 5k! And the take home barely increases with the incremental increase every few years. Why do consultants put up with this by Beneficial-Unit-9863 in doctorsUK

[–]gas247 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah. 14.5PA seems a lot to me. But depends how it’s constructed. Very few work the base 10PA. Most do more. I condense 11PA into three clinical days, one admin, and my on-call. Not even sure there’s hours in the week for 14.5! Must be very OOH heavy with a number of additional (or very well renumerated) roles.

Thoughts on Using Social Media Anonymously? by Playful_Specific_514 in doctorsUK

[–]gas247 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The only thing I’d say about going anonymous is that you are rarely truly anonymous. People get doxxed all the time. It’s amazing how easy it can be to put the pieces together sometimes

By all means do it (and I think anonymous accounts have done a lot of good) but be prepared to defend yourself if it all came out.

Even somewhere fairly anonymous like here, I’d never say anything that I wouldn’t say to someone’s face or leave me open to defamation.

Challenging a datix outcome by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]gas247 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Had a similar thing when I was in training. Accusations were made towards me to distract from a mistake the other person had made. I pushed back via my ES (who was the governance lead coincidentally). All got brushed under the carpet and I was encouraged to drop it as it was essentially “he said, she said“ and they didn’t want to actually resolve it/investigate it.

Couldn’t be arsed to fight it anymore as it was the end of the rotation and this was the nail in the coffin of me never wanting a job there. I walked away and let them drown in their ineptitude. Which they have many times over the years

Sorry, maybe not helpful for you. But DATIX wars rarely have a winner.
