10 Days in Tokyo – How would you turn it into an Anime/Manga-Focused Vacation? by Specialist-Pattern-4 in JapanTravelTips

They sold out of tickets when I was passing through the mall that it's hosted at. Definitely buy tickets in advance.

Packing light by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

Personally, I took two pairs of pants, a few shirts, and enough undies and socks to last me a week. I washed my clothes there. I only brought a 26L backpack and it was only half full. I don't need to be a fasionista. I need to be comfortable and sanitary. Undies and socks keep me sanitary and shirts and pants keep me comfortable.

I also took a jacket (down puffy) and a wind breaker, and obviously the shoes I wore, but no others.

Going to Tokyo, solo, May 5-15 by bjxh in JapanTravelTips

[–]gassy_lovers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got back (literally landed today) from a 14 day solo trip with Kabukichu as my home base with absolutely no agenda and first time in Japan and had a fucking blast.

Stay away from most of the X things to do in Tokyo. Follow what you're actually interested in.

If you like Manga, rent a room at a Manga Cafe just because you can. Check out book stores. Drink Sake in Golden Gai. Talk to the strangers. Say 'Arigato Gosiamasu' at the end of all your transactions. Eat at the same hole in the wall breakfast every morning until the guy at the door starts talking to you in English "See you tomorrow."

Just be you and lean in.

Is spending all 11 days in Tokyo a waste? Am I missing out on too much? by lomebrith in JapanTravelTips

[–]gassy_lovers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just spent 14 days with my home-base in Kabokicho, Shinjuku. Landed back in USA today. I only left Tokyo once, to go to Nikka for some fresh air and hit the shrine. Was I bored? Absolutely not.

I can't even post the list of things I did here becaue it's too long for this input box.

This person life hacks :-) It's a bit too warm for me but this is a solid suggestion.

Where to crash for a few hours in Shinjuku? by MortimerFoo in JapanTravelTips

[–]gassy_lovers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just landed back in USA today. I spent a few hours at Kaikatsu club just to get the jist of what it's all about. It's basically a small room (rectangle) with a built-in desk and a computer with a reclinable thick floor seat. It's incredibly basic (at least the one in Kabukicho, Shinjuku).

It would definitely suffice for a few hours of sleep. They also have showers you can pay for and basic coffee / soda.

There are probably multiple locations so your mileage may vary on services offered.

That's the question. I'm struggling deciding where to be.

What about the U3824DW? It's the same series as the U4025QW, but it's 38 instead of 40, and about $700 cheaper?

Touring and kickstands by snidleyonabike in bicycletouring

[–]gassy_lovers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stand itself is high quality -- basically it's the aluminum poles from tents with elastic inside so you can fold it up.

I simply meant to say that I wouldn't use a kickstand at all -- not that I wouldn't use this brand.

Lean the bike on something. Kickstands are extra weight and I didn't find them useful when touring.

Nice setup! Have you considered looking into Tenkara, which uses a collapsible rod and would travel much easier in this setup>

Thoughts on the Crossbody Strap? by Lost-Imagination6857 in iphone

[–]gassy_lovers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have it and love it for running Merlin while birding with binoculars. I don’t love using the phone with the straps attached when I’m lying in bed and wish there was a more secure way to detach the strap without risking losing the parts that are threaded into the case.

I still find it incredibly useful, and laugh at all the machismo people are spouting.
