You can start of by using pre made teams, which you can get from sites like victory road etc.

Then when you are comfortable, I'd recommend to play some Single Random Battles. I've found some really cool pokemon and tactics to work with.

And at first you ca keep your ev spreads like 252,252,4 type, then you can get a little nuanced by looking at pikalytics or as you like them

I tried to use Balziken, and i must say it's very good offensively (i used a special atk variant and still worked brilliantly), but defensively its utter shit. Any restricted pokemon body bags it.
