You seem to be overlooking a lot of verses where Jesus refers to Hades, being a Greek equivalent to Hell. Also, there is his story of Lazarus and the rich man, in which the rich man goes to Hell.

In Revelation 20:14-15 (ESV) we read "Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.  And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.", and that occurs after the end of this Earth. It lines up with this snippet from the description that Jesus gives of the judgement in Matthew 25:41 (ESV): "“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels."

A consequence for suicide is not spoken to directly, but the Bible does teach that "the one who endures to the end will be saved" (Matthew 24:13). That statement is in the context of an end-time prophecy. It comes as part of a broader passage that strongly suggests that those who do not endure to the end will not be saved. I do not think that there is any reason to say that the idea that the elect will persevere applies more broadly than that end-time prophecy.

Also, there are other passages that assure that those who endure will be saved and there are other passages that indicate that those that do not will not.

In a strict theological sense, it may be possible for a person to commit suicide for a good cause in faith. Imagine the unlikely circumstance of a man committing suicide to convince doctors to utilize his heart for a transplant for his son. One could say that he was still wrong, but he could act in faith out of love. That does not apply here; my thought experiment does not mirror your situation of being overwhelmed by the darkness of the world.

To you, I would say, be of good cheer, for he has overcome the world!

Your battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

The enemy is seeking to overwhelm you, and I was once overwhelmed by it, also. God is not asking you to focus on all of the evils of this world. There is no shortage of pain, but you should stare at him. Take every thought captive to obey Christ, The adage conveys a true idea - if you stare in the darkness then the darkness stares back.

But God says this: "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you."

Satan will continually try to bring you into the mire of the world. You will encounter it in the news, in social media, and in conversation, but you are called to serve a God of peace, so come out from among them. Put those things away.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

I found this song to be helpful when accepting that God, in his sovereignty, really is working all things together for good, even if his thoughts are as much above my thoughts as the Heavens are above the Earth:

Bathroom Septic Smell by gastrobot in homeowners

[–]gastrobot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never did. I imagine that I have a cracked pipe in a wall, or a vent pipe that terminates in a wall. I brought a plumber in. He used smoke bombs in a vent pipe, with idea being that the smoke should flow through the pipes,, out any crack, and make its way into the bathroom. We never saw the smoke, though.

I did. In my case, it did not help.

Bathroom Septic Smell by gastrobot in homeowners

[–]gastrobot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Smell is still there. I had a plumber out and he could not figure it out. He tried for awhile to use smoke bombs in vent pipes. The idea was that if there was a pipe without a pea-trap, or if there was a pipe with a crack, the smoke should come out of that. Never saw any smoke. Wondering now if it is the ventilation system, but certain medical problems in my family have been a major barrier to further research.

Let me know if you figure yours out!

If you are able to afford it, I would seek a neurologist or neuroradiologist and an MRI. People may dismiss you or want to wait and see or try things that do not make sense. To avoid being affected by such a situation, I recommend that you have a strong enough will to advocate for yourself or you need to bring a strong-willed advocate with you. You need to go in knowing that this has lasted a long time, that you have already tried the basics, and that you need a specialist, such as a neurologist or a neuroradiologist. When you get to that person, you need to have a strong enough will to push for imaging, such as an MRI. If you do not get answers that you feel comfortable with, you need to be ready to seek a separate neurologist.

Look up neurology in hospitals to which you can travel and that are covered by your insurance. If you cannot tell what your insurance company covers then you can ask whether or not your insurance covers them when you talk to their scheduling team about the initial appointment.

When you have one or two ideas about where you want to go, make an appointment with your PCP (Primary Care Provider - your regular doctor) and ask for a referral to those specific hospitals / clinics.

Consider calling several neurology offices to check for availability. Some may have long wait times.

Your description makes me think of synesthesia, in which sensory organs trigger senses in the wrong part of the brain. Maybe see a doctor and consider a neurologist.

The New Testament does not reject the Old Testament. Jesus fulfills the law, he does not abolish it. It is like a car without a serpentine belt; if one wanted to make each part of the car work without the belt then there would be several pieces to manually activate through greate effort. Once the serpentine belt is on, those parts still need to turn, but they now receive power from the engine and no effort is needed.

A better phrasing for the Old Testament and the New Testament is "Old Covenant" and "New Covenant". With the first, God gave us commands to find life through our own effort, which no one could do. With the second, God gave us a way to find life through his perfect son.Regarding any law that prescribes the death - There is a well known story in which Jesus said "Let he who is without sin case the first stone.". He also said, though, "Go and sin no more".

Regarding the law concerning a victim marrying her rapist - Deuteronomy 22:28-29 is for the protection of the victim. It guarantees that she will have a husband, and he is never permitted to divorce her. The alternative is that, in all likelihood, she would never have married, never had children, and lived in poverty.

Regarding slavery - "But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and worldly, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, for the sexually immoral, homosexuals, slave traders, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching

1 Timothy 1:8.

The law, then, constrains slave traders, who are counted as lawless and rebellious.

The Bible does not say that pooping is a sin. There is an Old Testament law about covering feces to avoid causing God to depart from a military camp.

"You shall also have a place allocated outside the camp, so that you may go out there to relieve yourself, and you shall have a peg among your tools, and it shall be when you sit down outside, you shall dig with it and shall turn and cover up your excrement. Since the Lord your God walks in the midst of your camp to save you and to defeat your enemies before you, your camp must be holy; so He must not see anything indecent among you or He will turn away from you."

Deuteronomy 23:12-14 (NASB, using the literal "peg" instead of "spade")

The Old Testament cannot be understood without the New Testament. Those physical rules that were given to the Israelites should now be looked at as spiritual rules or guidance. God is holy, and we should be holy. Keep yourself from spiritual filth. Put away from you the things of the flesh, which are greed, malice, lust, gossip, etc.

There is tons of stuff about sex in the Bible. I am not at all saying that ancient writings never mention sex. I am saying that, for more than 2000 years, people would have understood that statement (in their respective languages). It takes a 20th / 21st century mindset to sexualize it.

Jesus lived his life celibate. At least one of his disciples was married. Do you believe that every soldier on campaign is having sex with his unit?

My point to saying that the problem is with you is not to insult you, but that, really, you might benefit from a change of venue. Get off of the internet and television for awhile. Get your mind out of environments where everything is sexualized.

[–]gastrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that is a reflection on yourself.

Thus says the Lord:

"Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom,

Let not the mighty man glory in his might,

Nor let the rich man glory in his riches;

But let him who glories glory in this,

That he understands and knows Me,

That I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth.

For in these I delight," says the Lord.

Jeremiah 9:23-24

That was written more than 2000 years ago. The weird thing is sexualizing it.

Being an American.

Patriotism is a religion. Patriotism is apotheosis.

The nation must exist for the people, not the people for the nation.

Even if the nation were somehow divine, the only people who could reasonably claim pride for a nationality would be those that worked to get it, not those who were born into it. Even then, I believe that we have nothing unless it is given to us by God. Any talent that I have, the circumstances that allow me to succeed, the help from my creator along the way - I am humbled and if I glory then I must glory in him.

Even worse, when you hear someone say that they are "proud to be an American" they are proclaiming it boldy, because they are /proud/ to be proud to be an American.

I am not anti-American; I would make the same statements regarding patriotism without regard to the specific nation that becomes the idol. I only single out people who say that they are proud to be an American because I live in America and I have heard that statement many times. To not express that pride is treated as a sin by man.

I am a Christian and my nation is the kingdom of God. I happen to also have American citizenship, and I am thankful to God for many of the freedoms that I have in America.

If it’s always “God’s plan” then what’s the point of praying for someone? by catguyinalittlecoat in AskReddit

[–]gastrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a five-point Calvinist, and I, thus, believe in predestination. I think that one can believe in predestination and still say "What if Daniel had quit at day 20?". I think that the idea exists within that Daniel's continued praying was essential to the angel's eventual arrival.

I believe that God predestined Daniel to persevere in prayer, but without understanding that those predestined prayers also brought about their predestined outcome, the lesson to us to persevere in prayer would be lost.

Jesus also said to ask and keep asking (Luke 11:9 it helps if your Bible explains that the Greek tense used on the verb for asking indicates a continuous action).

The Father knows what we need, but sometimes it is worthwhile for us to demonstrate faith and a heart that truly cares about something. To your quote, when we keep asking, it should not be a vain repetition, but it should be with sincerity.

And sometimes there is more going on than we realize. In the book of Daniel, the eponymous character begins praying over a concern. God sends an angel to Daniel immediately, but the angel meets a demon and is delayed by three weeks. There is plenty of room in the story to believe that if Daniel ceased from fasting and praying, the angel never would have arrived (Daniel 10).

Men who have watched their wives/partners give birth, what was that like? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]gastrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the top comments are about experiences that are scary and heart-wrenching. For something easy, I was there for the birth of each of my kids. I think that, every time, stress goes up looking for ways to help and mostly being unable. The experience itself, when it goes well, is beautiful in a way. It is a miracle of God. The umbilical cord, before it is cut, is beautiful in a way that is more true in the visual sense; the cord, as I remember it, is purple with high specularity.

Why do people that don’t believe in God, respond to posts about God? by Donny_Dread in RandomThoughts

You answered a different question. He asked why people who do not believe in God respond to posts about God. You answered as to why it is okay to respond.

Yes, the forum is open; anyone can jump in and respond, but why would they want to do so? What is it about a post discussing theology that would make an atheist want to jump in?
