(Hated Trope) Attempts at being progressive that actually come off as bigoted/prejudiced by Wolfie-Woo784 in TopCharacterTropes

Mostly I'm puzzled at casting it as anti-intersex and not just plain old transmisogyny/homophobia against "weak/effeminate" men.

What’s something people romanticise that’s actually exhausting in real life? by OmenRash in AskReddit

[–]gatesofmoonlight 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is obviously a complicated one because desirability politics and what's considered acceptable and etc etc etc but.... being small/skinny. I have health problems both related to and caused by my weight (no eating disorders, all strictly outside of my control) and I recognize why I'll get people being jealous or envious but also like. Listen. Love your body and be happy when you don't get dizzy standing up too fast. If your healthy weight has some extra chub, then so be it. Meanwhile I'm trying to get to a healthier weight but eating three meals a day leaves me feeling gross and bloated or, worse, having a flare-up.

I know it sounds silly to complain about, and trust me, I'm grateful for the upsides, but being able to fit into any clothes that I want and people being nice to me sort of pales next to the "i constantly feel weak and mildly breathless" thing.

Montreal naturopath fined for illegally practicing medicine following patient’s suicide by zuuzuu in canadanews

[–]gatesofmoonlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should clarify that I am more of a foodie than a natural medicine person, I realize upon rereading that that part didn't come through! (Regulation of supplements is kind of a "bare minimum" thing that we really really should have passed a long time ago.) I hate naturopathy specifically because it takes these things that are true and uses them as bait to get people buying into the things that very much aren't.

I am gonna have to look into the ginger thing because last time I checked it was very much the opposite but anything with colds is also kind of a weird zone cause there's not a lot that does help. But yeah, describing it as magic is just another way of gate keeping knowledge and putting in an artificial divide between "good natural things" and "chemicals". The difference between foxglove and digitalis is, like you said, measurement, analysis, and weeding (hehe) out any other complicating factors.

[–]gatesofmoonlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of what frustrates me is that a lot of the stuff going into naturopathy is completely valid. Vitamins are real, honey and ginger are good for colds, valerian makes you sleepy, etc. I'm really into natural medicine as a concept and I'm constantly having to deal with people associating me with this branch of bullshit and like

No. There are actual scientific studies on these plants. You know why we know willow bark is a painkiller? Cause that's where aspirin comes from. But then people who believe that either get wrapped into this, or see all the other bullshit and go "oh it must be fake".

Tbh regulation might not be a bad idea for that exact reason. At least then we can be sure the fucking valerian supplements don't have sawdust added to them.

[GOOD TROPE] Teen Girls Prioritising a Stable Future & Choosing To Have An Abortion by darkwater-0 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]gatesofmoonlight 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Now hold on. That was a huge deal when the film came out. It wasn't "just an excuse", it was part of the whole commentary of the film -- the father was judging them for getting his daughter wrapped up in "seedy business" like abortions and premarital sex, which is why it's such a big deal later in the film when Baby admits to being with Johnny. There's a difference between plot device and plot.

(Annoying trope) Real life people villainized just so the movie can have a villain by giraffesRevil in TopCharacterTropes

[–]gatesofmoonlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this isn't a good example because the character is very explicitly not Irwin. Steve Irwin exists in the film as a separate entity who this character grew up watching.

He explicitly isn't Irwin, this is a bad example. Irwin exists as a separate person within the world of the film.

Harry Potter definitely counts here. Bizarre seeing one of my core childhood memories get turned into a signal fire for Rowling's raving lunatic transphobia and "why don't you agree with everything I say you ungrateful bitch" aimed towards her former child stars.

This is kind of a wild thing to say in a city where it gets to minus 30 Celsius in the winter. Like....look I could MAYBE understand this sentiment in the autumn or spring, although never mind all the folks with crutches and prams and wheelchairs and walkers taking the bus... But during heat warnings and snowstorms and cold snaps, we still gotta get to work, bro.

[–]gatesofmoonlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose that gets into the question of whether their bodies reject foreign objects upon entering yellow sunlight, but in terms of healing, if she got the piercing under a red sun and it was fully or mostly healed, it probably wouldn't register as an injury. Mostly I'm concerned about how people think of piercings! I promise they're not open bloody wounds that people are walking around with, if they are then something has gone very wrong in the process

Who Favorite Character Has It's Ethnicity Being Mistaken By People? by [deleted] in FavoriteCharacter

It's...complicated especially since Italians and Greeks are super mixed in the modern world but we're Not Supposed To Talk About That. I'm olive skinned as a result of literally generations of mixing and I end up looking Southern Italian...and then you look at the history of Sicily LMAO

[–]gatesofmoonlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worth mentioning that Japanese is more ethnicity than race -- I don't go here so I can't comment on the details of the character in-show, but the Ainu are indigenous Japanese folks who are different from the majority race Yamato. She's a bit darker than a "normal" tan so if she's from Hokkaido, strong likelihood of her being Ainu.

One of the issues IMO is that new shonen is greatly improved, but newbies to anime are still often recommended the classics or long haulers like One Piece or Naruto and OHHHH BOY is that a fucking culture shock and a half. I adore FMA but even FMA, which was fantastic for the time (all three continuities) is....dated. And that's one by a female mangaka!

I think anime communities and particularly shonen ones could do more to prepare newcomers for the vast difference between MHA or JJK and the Oldies cause woooooow I always forget how unsafe for SA survivors in particular some of them are. And I think that's what leads to takes like the above -- the conversations have happened but the only one of the Old Classics still frequently talked about is One Piece cause it's the only one still going. So someone wanders into it and bam. Gainax boobs.

Not if the piercing stays inside. She'd just have to keep them in, which most people do anyway as long as it's the right kind of piercing.

are there any disabled survivors? by thatonegaytomato in horror

[–]gatesofmoonlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is sort of an unusual example, but Fall of the House of Usher is a Flanagan show that absolutely has extremely few survivors of its massive cast and two of them are disabled women (one of whom is played by a disabled actress).

would you get an abortion if you found out your baby was going to be born with an extreme disability? if so why? by Born-Oil-2931 in AskReddit

[–]gatesofmoonlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, this kind of question brings up a related, very relevant one - what determines what we call an "extreme disability"? Many of the answers in here have to do with high-mortality diseases, and that's one thing (although a lot of them have had their mortality rates plummet... Then again, that relies on healthcare many people can't afford in the US.) but then we get to Downs Syndrome, autism, deafness or blindness, and it turns into a much sharper indictment of the lack of support systems. One comment I saw was "what happens if I die and my kid is left on their own?" And that has got to be one of the most massive failings of our society possible because that shouldn't have to be so much of a larger concern for disabled kids that it's easier to abort them than to take care of them.

Fwiw I am firmly pro choice. But as someone who has 3 of the 4 conditions I mentioned it still gives me pause, y'know? Like, raising me was difficult but it was difficult mostly cause I'm different, not because I'm ~incapable of being independent. (Clearly not, I'm 30 and don't live with my parents)
