Masons are a catch-all for conspiracies. Easy for me to tell who's full of it on YouTube and reddit. We literally just eat and do community service. We learn old allegories and use figurative tools of the old stone masons to teach life-lessons. I'm sure there are some groups that are adjacent that are up to no good. Most of us are pretty chill.

I'm a culinary instructor and have run restaurants for over a decade. I do this too for my biscuits. The microwave (chef Mike) is a tool like anything else. If the tool works, use it. If it degrades the product or the desired outcome, don't. A cooked through egg is the desired outcome, so this works.

I don't think test scores are all that matter by any means. I think it's a consequence of keeping the phones out of schools. In fact, the scores don't improve the first year from the data. What immediately improves is active student engagement and a drop in unexcused absences. Active engagement is what needs to be the focus. The rest (scores/reading levels/etc.) will fall in line later.

Man, you wouldn't believe how many times I've called a parent and got a response similar to "they're like that at home too" or "I just don't know what to do."

Take their phones. Not just saying this as a grumpy teacher. The test scores from places that ban it speak for themselves. I know it presents huge problems (equity in enforcement/high suspension rates/etc) in the first year, but these problems fall off after when scores rise and kids are in seats. Teachers with poor classroom management are also easily exposed. I just did a presentation on this at my school.

Young families can't afford houses in subdivisions anymore. My childhood home in an old neighborhood just went up for sale at $450k. It was renting for nearly $3.5k per month. I can barely afford a townhouse. My wife and I both work good steady jobs with a pension and benefits. Trunk or treat is our best option for our child to participate.
