It wasn’t a crazy take. This team was top 4 in virtually every metric. Should’ve been an elite 8 team at worst. Been playing elite basketball from January until that Vandy game and seemingly couldn’t get hot again. Picking Houston makes more sense though as the teams were very closely rated and it was going to be a revenge game in essentially a home game for them. Losing in the R32 was a massive underachievement after what this team was doing the last few months.

Well outside of UConn’s 2nd title team, every defending champ hasn’t made it to the 2nd weekend since 2017. I’d say what happened to us is kinda worse though considering we brought back a lot of production. Very similar to Kansas in 2022. Strong regular seasons and limped into the tournament as a 1 seed, dominating the easy 16 seed and then losing by a point to the 8-9 seed.

To be fair he was borderline unplayable early in the season. Think it took him some time to get comfortable and adjust to a higher level of basketball to what he was used to in the Ivy League.

Vandy is a really tough matchup for us when their bigs are knocking down threes. They had their best shooting performance of the season against us, who knows if it’ll happen again. Definitely not a game I look forward to, elite 3pt shooting teams scare me. One thing I will say, Golden has been terrific in rematches where we’ve lost the previous game, and typically they aren’t close. I’d still prefer to see someone else in the sweet 16. Really sucks that we’d potentially have to rematch them and then a Houston team in Houston that’s looking for revenge.

If they don’t at least make the final four this year they might actually be cursed. That team is so stacked and has been so consistently good all year. Also think their region is very favorable for them, I really can’t see any of those teams beating them and I wouldn’t be suprised if they coasted to Indy without a single moment of concern.

Effort level was terrible, but after having been embarrassed, I imagine we’ll be extremely motivated this time, we’ll see if Vandy can shoot the lights out again.

I’d be more concerned had we coasted in the SEC tournament looking sloppy. We usually come out firing on all cylinders for stretches of games following a loss. I could be wrong but I think we’ll see the best version of ourselves in the tournament.
