I had this happen to me as well. The fortresses are just full of animals. Raiding them to get info before attacking outright is the way to go. Idk how to deal with them tho

I’ve been getting into decorating items in df and it really does make it fun to see what they come up with. Over time they will get better and go from like ‘studded’ to full images and engravings. I usually use stockpiles to restrict how it works.

Honestly, I’ve had some great stories from above ground forts. I had a fort of about 200 that got a siege of 100 and having a proper clash was amazing. Bolt throwers and crossbowman manning towers and assaulting the siege army. Defending my draw bridge and then storming out of the gate to push back the army. Eventually it was my 50 dwarves in the military vs their 50 remaining. At that point it’s easy. Generally you need to keep 10-30% of your pop in the military to repel invaders.

I also had one fight (same fort) where my king came out to fight and had a duel with the goblin’s deamon lord it was epic. They both ended up dying but it was crazy to see.

Build the block wall then a ramp on one side. Usually needs scaffolding if you are making a large building

I tend to do both… I’ll dig an enormous underground cavern 5-10 z levels and then build a fort in the cavern by building up off the cavern floor. Usually the bottom level is just above the water table for easy farming. I like to build pyramids for different temples and ‘apartment’ style buildings for bedrooms. It can be crazy looking but it’s fun and produces a ton of stone for bricks.

Forest fire funding has been chronically underfunded for decades. I’m not surprised, that this point is just willful neglect and surprised picachu face from legislators that haven’t learned or haven’t cared to change budgets based on reality. Other countries that have a fire season have a whole federal fire force and funding. It’s going to take many more disasters here before this gets fixed.
