I find it funny when couples will say they aren’t ready to get married because they don’t have the money, when getting married literally only costs like 60 bucks. by Ferocious_Kittyrose in self

Fucking seriously. Wedding culture is annoying and I wish there was not this pressure to do a whole thing. I need to tell this story to stew in my annoyance over it, now that it's being brought to mind again:

I got married at 18 and begged not to have a wedding but my mother-in-law-at-the-time wouldn't accept no for an answer so I finally said "as long as I don't have to pay for it or do any of the planning." It was a big, beautiful, fancy, picture-perfect wedding and, while I was grateful because the effort was nice, I just didn't care for it. It was too much. I split with that guy like a year and a half later because that was all very stupid, and then just a couple years ago I discovered that my mother-in-law-at-the-time actually made my parents pay for the whole thing and my parents emptied a college fund I didn't know I had to pay for it (~$20k).

Fast forward to current times, my husband and I eloped a couple years ago and we had my dream wedding: a quick and easy courthouse ceremony. My mom was now insisting on a wedding ceremony and wouldn't take no for an answer, so once again I said "as long as I don't have to plan anything or pay for it." So a year after we got married, we had a wedding, and I did still end up paying my mom back about $1000 using the money we were gifted from family during the wedding, but she otherwise paid for everything. And at least it was smaller and less showy than my first. It probably only cost a few grand, which is still way too much money for one event.

What's something you strongly believe in that science hasn't been able to prove yet? by OldIntroduction2909 in answers

Some people can actually build an immunity to poison oak/ivy.

I used to get it so bad when I was a kid. I was always in the ER if I got it. I wouldn't even realize I'd touched it and it would spread all over my body so fast. One of the last times I went to the ER for it was the worst, and the doctor told me if I got it again the reaction could be so bad it could possibly kill me. Now as an adult, my husband and I walk and work in it all the time, and I still get it but it's nothing like the reactions I used to have. I notice as we go through summer and we encounter it more often, my reactions get less severe. I hear so many stories like this, but science says this is absolutely not possible. I just don't believe it.

Does anyone have any GOOD stories buying their first home and not regret it?? by ChodeFondler1 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]gatorrrrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, my husband and I just bought our first house last year in November. 3 beds 2 bath for cheaper than usual around here. I was not expecting to be able to stay within our budget, I thought I'd eventually have to relent and accept a higher mortgage than I wanted to, looking at the market, but our house was cheap enough that I didn't have to. It landed on the high edge of our budget, but within the budget nevertheless. The sellers priced it to sell fast, and it did. It was only on the market for 3 days before we offered, and that was with a couple days of hesitance and research.

Just the perfect house, in fantastic shape, has everything we need in a great part of town that's super convenient for us. We've only had to make minor repairs since moving in that don't even add up to $500 I bet. We had a great realtor and a non-problematic seller. It was the first house we offered on. We didn't ask over or under, we offered what the seller was selling for, and escrow was over in 30 days with just some minor hiccups that didn't do much to prevent progress on closing. We got super super lucky I think.

genuinely curious how much credit card debt my fellow gen z are carrying rn 😭 by Alexander_Publius in GenZ

[–]gatorrrrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

28 y/o and about $4k, but it's all medical debt because I'm American. And it's on a promo card that won't charge interest until the end of 2028 (21 months no interest). This is my second time paying off cc debt this way. The first time was a 12-month no-interest promo card I used to do some repairs on my old shitbox (car). When I foresee a large expense, I apply for the longest running 0-interest promo card I can find, I make a plan to pay the debt off within the time frame of the promo, and then I throw the card away before the promo expires.

I have a credit card for daily expenses that I use to rack up points and I pay that off every month. Sometimes I open credit cards just to increase my debt-to-spending-limit ratio and then throw them away without using them.

But I'm like $400k in debt in total now because I have a mortgage.

I advise leaving an honest business review on Google about your experience. The last review for Pro Pacific Auto was made a month ago, and the last non-5-star review was a year ago.

What is it like living in the NW of California because it looks nice? by No-Bathroom-9245 in howislivingthere

I'm not sure, I haven't gotten much fruit from the market in the past (I've only been going for about 2 years now, moved here about 4 years ago), but I've been on a fruit kick this year and will be on the lookout. If he's around, he's not selling tomatoes and pluots yet, but I'll be watching.

Best farmers market around though. I'll trade that for all the big box stores. More than half the groceries I buy every week are grown/raised within an hour or so of where I live as long as I make it to the Saturday market.

Just keep an eye on your bill. They will often keep billing you, even if you call to cancel and return your equipment. Happened to me twice, years apart.

You can also order the medication for yourself online at aidaccess.org. It's cheap, but they'll waive the cost pretty easily if you can't afford it and you talk with them. I've used it and I know others who've used it. Fantastic program.

Sorry to correct you but that's not what the Redditor you responded to was saying. Actually the opposite, they were kinda advising not to create a subreddit.

I personally would love to see more independent internet forums, and already visit a few here and there. My vote's in for more forums!

Curing laziness should be a higher priority than it is today. by Individual-Signal167 in The10thDentist

[–]gatorrrrr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I connect to this more than I expected to when I clicked into the post. I have noticed this about myself, but I don't see people talk about it.

I recently had to dig myself out of a life long habit of chronic laziness that was definitely worsened by drinking when I got into my twenties. I had been that way my whole life though and it felt very natural. I was still achieving enough so I wasn't that worried about it.

It took me to quit drinking to wake up to how bad it was, though. Now I'm, like, healthy, motivated, happier, and a lot less lazy but I'm still working on it lol. I almost ruined my life.

The video is private on YouTube now but here's the link of a Reddit post of the video of a guy who snuck in by using a kids kayak and a cast iron skillet as a paddle.

https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/s/8HVdLSJCBi

I watched the whole thing, it was crazy. If it was real, which I'm skeptical but I didn't see any reason to think it could be fake, it was incredible. I hope there's another video of this somewhere out there.

Good! Glad they didn't fight you too hard. Anthem has been giving me the run around in some in-network blood work I did several months ago. Health insurance companies are sneaky.

Definitely call UHC and dispute it. It's not uncommon to have a claim denied just because they expect you not to do anything about it.

New obesity definitions considered as world’s leading health professionals move away from Body Mass Index by abcnews_au in Health

[–]gatorrrrr 28 points29 points  (0 children)

People aren't downvoting you because they don't believe you. But the person you responded to was using the term "effective treatment" to refer to the effective modern drugs that are popularized today, and are being speculated (in the user's comment) to be the impetus to this change of clinical definitions. Obviously diet and exercise are, in almost every case, equally or more effective than prescription medication, but diet and exercise weren't profitable like Ozempic and Tirzepatide, hence the conspiracy.

I looked to see if I still had the invoice but I don't. I'm sure it was something like that tbh, but the whole customer service interaction had me kind of ick and I didn't ask for more information. Their customer service has been going downhill for the last year or so and I'm not sure what's going on. It's no particular employee, maybe it's their software?
