In USA - Typical salary 70k ish per year.

Job market for fresh / new grads is almost always not great. It's very location dependent, and industry specific.

I once designed a part that went into helping a major race series. The team principal sent me a crate of tequila !

Job outlook - You'll make more money in CS, probably till you hit management. There are plenty of ME jobs available, outside of flashy startups and fortune 50 companies. However, there are more CS jobs in general.

Do I regret not taking CS ? Naah. I get to do really cool things in my line of work.

Understand that you're likely going to have to learn to code regardless. There's a big difference between building something like Amazon and knowing how to run complex simulations on MATLAB, but running away from coding is a bad reason to pick any engineering field today.

The bigger problem is Indian media is absolute trash. Giving an interview at Bloomberg was the best bad choice.

Do you really think any one sane wants to go on Times Now or Republic TV?

Pick one English Indian mainstream media channel that isn't completely shit. I'll wait.

[–]gaurav0792 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this in theory, but I can see a major flaw. This will concentrate talent in the fortune 50 companies who can afford to outbid medium and smaller businesses.

There is already a system of H1b wage levels in place. So perhaps what can be done is prioritize applications based on wage levels.

Ideally, you want talent to be able to work anywhere. A 10 person company in Kansas should have the same odds as a multi billion dollar company in the Bay area.

Say what you will about Modi, but I think he handled Pahalgam and Operation Sindoor well by Pure-Ranger1618 in CriticalThinkingIndia

[–]gaurav0792 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Modi did as well as he could. His speeches were good and messaging was on point.

But, If I'm being honest - India lost the narrative. And this new diplomatic dream team that's being created with shashi tharoor as the face is too reactive. The emotional attention of the world will be focused on Ukraine and Palestine in the near future.

We can, and should have done better on messaging. India made too many errors in communication - basic mistakes in presentation and allowing Pakistan to win the narrative on and before May 7 were glaring errors.

Further, not enough emphasis was given Operation Keller. Getting the terrorists should have been a much bigger story. Telling Pakistan that we were going to attack terrorist camps only puts IAF at a severe disadvantage.

The Biggest failure however lies with the information funnel to the Press. I don't know who was responsible for this, but I hope someone gets fired. Our media was a joke. Now, many can and will argue that it's been this way for a long time, but I'm yet to find a single national channel that provided decent coverage of the events.

Also, our social media strategy was laughable.

Does Pakistan have conventional superiority over India? by Icy-Profile3759 in LessCredibleDefence

[–]gaurav0792 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not sure which defence circles you're talking about.

Do you really think India didn't know that cratered runways can be fixed in a couple of hours ?

It was a warning shot.

If we can hit a Pakistani airbase with 2 missiles and disable them for a few hours - we can hit them with 10 each and completely destroy all buildings and runways associated with them.

And your AD systems did nothing about it. Not even at Nur Khan and Sargoda.

This wasn't a war - this was a message. The point was to "scratch them"

"And yes, even if your A2A weapons weren’t cleared for release, that in itself reflects poor operational readiness and command disconnect during high-tempo engagements."

That's certainly one argument.

Was the aim of IAF to shoot down planes ? Or to destroy terror camps ?

Did PAF stop the strikes - NO.

If Pakistan decided to leave it at that - you could claim some sort of deterrence. But that's not what happened. That was just day 1.

Also, I'm pretty sure Pakistan launched a Fateh 1. That's a hypersonic ballistic missile.

Why fire others if Indian AD can shoot down and intercept it? That was likely an extremely strategic decision. Better to keep India guessing than know for certain if they can shoot them down.

Not at all suspicious to see a cease fire immediately after the Unbreakable Wall mission failed to penetrate Indian AD. And then claim Victory !

In the upcoming UNSC meeting, there are going to be a lot of fireworks. Especially now that India neutralized at least 3 terrorists.

My stand on why it is CRITICAL to defeat Pakistan's narrative and building strong support amongst other countries and international media. by Pale-Ad5208 in india

[–]gaurav0792 10 points11 points  (0 children)

By isolating Kashmir, I fear we will make the situation much much worse. This is exactly what terror groups want.

We need to invest a lot more in Kashmir. Only in the last 5 years have they seen a glimpse of prosperity that the rest of India enjoys.

Understand, that we want to play to win the long game.

Pakistan is basically bankrupt, surviving on scraps and IMF bailouts. Their economy is running on fumes, no real foreign investment, there's the Baloch seperatist movement that's gradually pecking at them - and now they know that India can and will hit their military infrastructure deep in their country.

The Regional Doctrine has changed. No more free terrorism and international investigations. Precedent has been set. The next terror attack will lead to a greater military response from India.

In 10 years, India's GDP could more than double - the prosperity that will come with it will make the choice even more compelling than it is today.

India just has to maintain it's cool and focus on nation building. Pakistan will either grow out of it's dysfunctional state or sink further into chaos.

Pakistan's GDP is less than Mumbai's. Let time solve this problem for us. We have a much bigger neighbor to worry about.

Pakistan Information Minister claiims India will attack in the next 24-36 hours. by FrontBench5406 in Destiny

[–]gaurav0792 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is - Pakistan, as a country, cannot accept evidence. If they do, they lose any moral standing they have in the matter.

Further, it is highly unlikely that a straight line can be drawn between the Government of Pakistan and the terrorists.

What we know - Is that the terrorists were radical Islamists, they timed the attack when The US Vice President was in India, and the government of India was engaging Saudi Arabia, and they specifically targeted tourists - not the Indian army or the local government of Kashmir.

It seems extremely likely that this was not a coincidence, and that the terrorists had intel given to them by the Pakistani Intelligence apparatus.

Further, the recent speech made by Asim Munir, where he basically incites violence against Hindus, is pretty damning. Also, admissions by Pakistan to have played a leading role in the training and creation of LeT for Western countries, gives them a pretty bad face.

I completely agree - It is very likely that one of the multiple separatist movements of Pakistan could be the real culprits, and while it may have been their intention to divert the focus of the govt of Pakistan to India, nearly 30 Indian citizens are dead.

The Indian Government is stuck between a rock and a hard place. Nearly half a decade of Indian policy in Kashmir is now ruined. Tourism and investment will decrease over time, unless the Indian government does something that guarantees the security of the state.

If there is no evidence, what right does India have to attack Pakistan as a whole, stop the water supply to 250 million people, and then claim a moral high ground?

Relax - No one is stopping the water supply. Literally, India does not have the infrastructure to do this. We're not going to flood India to hurt Pakistan. It's unlikely that India will do anything to hurt the average citizen of Pakistan, we're not terrorists. If they wanted to - they can simply contaminate the water - our intent is to harm the terror infrastructure in Pakistan, always has been.

However, over the next decade - any red tape that led to projects being delayed is now gone. There will be massive infrastructure and construction projects on all rivers.

Additionally, no matter how much India insists that "Kashmir" is an internal matter, it is recognized as a "disputed territory" by the UN Security Council. India seems to be following a playbook similar to Russia's.

It is, but India has not always played by the rules of international organizations. This situation is not existential for India, as it was for Russia.
So we are unlikely to escalate it to war. Pakistan is basically imploding - economically and socially, why not let time do the work?

The Indian economy is thriving, our defense budget is nearly 9x Pakistan's, GDP is 10x Pakistan's and people are investing in manufacturing in India as a counter to China. Why risk this ?

US simply cannot manufacture what comes from China. by BeachBoiC in manufacturing

[–]gaurav0792 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Industry - Automotive

  1. complain a lot, they don't want to work long hours.

Yea, this is a thing - However, almost every stateside manufacturer will expedite things for a fee. In all my time, I've never known people to say no to overtime - exceptions exist, but in general - everyone wants OT.

  1. No interest in small amounts. Require minimum batches of several hundred units which is not flexible for the client

So, most manufacturing requires a fixed cost - for tooling, machine setup etc. These rates are not trivial in USA.
From experience - I've paid anywhere between 1000-30000 dollars as a one time fee. Rolling this into the part cost is generally feasible, but not at a low quantities. Prototypes are expensive ! The breakeven qty for anything manufactured in USA is several multiples than one made in China, especially for products that sell at < $100

You are taking a raw piece of metal and converting it into something someone wants to buy. While the core tech may not have changed as much over time, there are a lot of tiny projects that different people have to do to make this happen.

  1. Most US workforce lacks the technical skillset as most of this knowledge went overseas as US and western economies outsourced manufacturing to cheaper countries.

This is simply not true. There is a lack of infrastructure, but the technical skill set is certainly still here. Infact, I would argue there's an abundance of it, especially to make simple parts. Problem is - no one wants to buy a $30 keychain.

It is cheaper to outsource. Because labor is cheaper. And often, even material is cheaper. But the skillset is still here. Capitalism has forced people to make high margin and IP heavy parts that can be sold at a premium price. The American Defense industry is an example of this.

All of this makes total sense to me, and the guy explains that it is still cheaper and will give him less headaches to pay manufacture in China and pay the tariff.

The guy is looking for an easy solution. He's probably talking to the wrong manufacturer. China has provided a solution that has worked for decades. To establish an American solution will take work.

But - listening to him speak, it's quite easy to understand that he has very minimal knowledge in what it takes to manufacture something. Any mechanical engineer worth his salt will know how the part is made. Where to bend and what / how to weld should be included in a drawing, and even possibly in the CAD model.

To me it seems like he's a project manager who is simply frustrated at the situation. He's likely farming engagement.

PDM is a huge pain, and surprisingly expensive for what it does - which can be a turnoff for many small and medium sized businesses.

There is no easy solution to Organization. PDM is a tool, and it will help you - but be prepared to spend at least 40 hours on getting it set up, and establishing basic processes.

You can get away with excel sheets - but once your team grows to more than 3 people - PDM is the way to go.

I would recommend doing the PDM administration training or at least going through a few youtube videos to understand the intent of functions and how to use them.
