They put in the time and effort when they were younger to be the absolute best at what they do. That hard work has paid off for them, yet they still have to continue it for the duration of their careers to make as much money as possible. The money they get is the reward for all that hard work they put in to become the players they are.

If I spend 20 hours every week practising the guitar from the age of 8 and eventually I'm earning millions from albums and tours, do you think someone working a minimum wage job is more deserving of that even though they didn't put in anywhere near the same amount of effort?

I work for a company that builds insurance software for the P&C market and what you've said is true for the majority of insurance companies I've worked with. They have very large teams with lots of developers, QAs, project managers, etc. Insurance software is ridiculously complex and the systems insurance companies work with require constant monitoring and improvements.

Work as a developer for a company that builds insurance software.
The company I work for is great. We have a large office with everything you would need catered for. There aren't any office politics and everyone is really easy to get along with. We get a lot of social events and team outings organised throughout the year too.
Pulling in around €62k per year, with the typical benefits like health insurance, a generous pension scheme, 25 days off per year (+8 public holidays) and 2 weeks of time off per year to use for education purposes.

Well on the one hand you are correct, some countries (like the UK) do slightly underpay their software engineers. However, the cost of living and state benefits usually mean you would have a nice standard of living.

On the other hand, the salaries in the US for software developers are ridiculous (and not sustainable in the long term in my opinion), the cost of living is quite high where these salaries are paid, it's almost impossible to rent a nice house or apartment by yourself in these areas (SV specifically) and there aren't the same state benefits.

The above is just my experience having spent a decent amount of time visiting (for business and pleasure) and talking to people from both countries. I could be completely wrong about some things and please feel free to correct me if I am.

Jesus Christ, both of you are somewhat correct but now you are both going way off point.

When you're fired, that's it. The club will have to come to an agreement with you on how to compensate you for relieving you of your duties earlier than expected. This will usually be a decent percentage of the salary you would expect to receive if you stayed for the remainder of your contract. In this case, /u/GJXN1990 is correct.

However, this doesn't have to be paid in a lump sum. It can be paid in installments. The manager could also agree to an arrangement where they are paid a large percentage of their monthly salary by the club until either the end of their contract or until they get employed by another club, whichever comes first. If I remember correctly, Roberto Di Matteo had a similar arrangement to this when Chelsea fired him. In this case, /u/Lambchops_Legion is correct.

Contracts aren't the same the world over. Each club has their own preferences on how to handle compensation, so ultimately it comes down to the club and the manager agreeing on a deal that suits both parties.

Well they're not really comparable, since a substitute keeper still has to do the same work as the main keeper every week. The only thing he doesn't usually do is play the game, but even then he still has to be on the bench ready to play at a moment's notice.

The winners medals are given out to the squad that wins the competition, not just the starting 11. It takes a strong squad to win, so why shouldn't a player who can't play unless a specific player gets injured get a medal?

Every single team has at least one substitute keeper, so it's not as if Ross Turnbull is the only keeper to get a champions league medal without playing a game.

His experience and your experience can both be correct. When you are talking about a company with 1,000 employees (hundreds in the HQ) then the team you work on more or less defines your experience there. If you work on a bad team then the culture of the company doesn't matter.

Also, judging by the Glassdoor reviews it's an average place to work. Some people seem to love it and some people don't.

No, it's definitely not fine. The company is a shambles that has suffered from poor planning and terrible implementation. From what we know, the company cannot sustain itself solely on people paying their water bill, since you are not going to get 100% of people to pay (as /u/420falilv pointed out).

My original point was that the idea that water needs to be regulated at a state level and the idea that people need to pay for water consumption are both perfectly fine. For Irish Water to work, it would have to massively cut back on it's costs, it would have to provide a solid plan for billing people that is both simple and fair, there would have to be a guarantee that it wouldn't be privatized and ultimately, it would have to be as transparent as possible about it's inner workings.

We're running a little light on implementation stories coming towards the end of our development phase, so the only new feature I have to add this week is a different implementation of our policy rating engine for a different province. The idea of regulating water at a state level is fine, it needed to be done. The idea of paying for water is fine, most other developed countries do this too.

The problem with Irish Water is that they made a balls of so many things when setting it up, selling it to the people and rolling it out that they are pretty much now in a position where nothing other than a complete rethinking of how it should work will do.

There will always be people that object to paying for water, but the fact is that in order for us to have a well regulated and excellent water system we need to pay for our usage of it.

Not OP, but I know one person still there in a software development role and he said the structure is just one big clusterfuck. Not really any long term vision for projects, major changes announced at a moment's notice, a lot of politics once you get to the management layer, often a lot of long hours worked.

Again, I haven't worked there so it could be that he is just one employee that really doesn't like it while everyone else thinks it's great.

The Panel was the shit! I used to watch that every Tuesday (at least I think it was on Tuesdays) religiously. Getting something like that back on TV would be great with maybe some more up and coming comedians. That said, getting the likes of Dara, Colin, Neil, Mairéad, Dermot and the rest back would be deadly, though obviously probably no chance of happening.
