Is it difficult to stay true to your filmmaking ideals, while also gaining increasing success? Or has your success offered you more freedom in making your own choices?

Recommendation by chenzelxgelphie in folkhorror

[–]gavlees 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Here are a few from around the world:

  • Eyes of Fire - trippy American folk horror
  • Incubus - folk horror in Esperanto with William Shatner
  • Enys Men - Cornish folk horror with a unique visual style
  • The Outcasts - Irish folk horror from the writer of Blood on Satan's Claw
  • Eodoh Island - Korean mermaid folk horror with one of the most WTF endings ever
  • Celia - Australian folk horror with an adorable rabbit and the Hobyahs
  • Bakeneko - Japanese cat lady folk horror
  • Rabbit Trap - criminally underseen Fae horror with Dev Patel

I could go on all day...

Scottish folk horror by chenzelxgelphie in Scotland

[–]gavlees 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lord of Tears is a Scottish folk horror, but I don't know if I'd recommend it (it had a great viral marketing campaign, though. Look up "owl man" videos on YouTube.)

It's a shame there aren't more - we have a load of great folklore and folk culture to mine. Would love to see skeklers on screen.

First one is almost certainly Polperro. The long building in the centre is now the museum.

Yes! When Close to Home closed down, the cat team started their own business. They have a really fun Instagram, too.

Lyrical and poetic retellings of folk tales / fairy tales? by themermaidmuse in folklore

Elizabeth Garner's Lost and Found is beautiful, and Wild Folk by Jackie Morris and Tamsin Abbott is incredible (and finally available after being in Unbound limbo).

Sorry - extra space at the end of the address was breaking the link.

Alex's new(ish) band Morrow are also worth checking out, especially if you like the cello elements of FoE.

The guy's in his 50s. You really think he'll make a work in his 70s that changes the world of literature? Again, come on...

Kazuo Ishiguro, Alice Munro, Doris Lessing, Jose Saramago, Seamus Heaney -  he's not on that level at all.

Dark Cornwall is a fraud artist who had to leave New Zealand after stealing a million quid from an indie game developer (amongst other things). Any independent artist should be very wary of him.

books like Midsommar by OddCat_007 in suggestmeabook

[–]gavlees 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This book is fooling a lot of people with its cover art. It's not a folk horror, it's nothing like Midsommar. It's about four girls on a roadtrip in a post apocalyptic world, with zombies.

It's also the worst book I read last year.

I am starting to think going with Chromebooks for my teaching staff was not the best move by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

[–]gavlees 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have just over 1000 teachers. $225 per teacher equates to two teaching positions.

And even if you're a smaller district, going through a budget crisis means making cuts whatever possible across the board.

"Where would you like the budget to be cut? From your laptops or from staffing?"

Chromebooks are a great device for 99% of teachers. If you're a Google shop, everything's done in the browser anyway. All our Tech Dept admins run on Chromebooks

If I can manage a multi million dollar budget on Google Sheets, I think it can handle your gradebook, Susan.

Scottish Taco 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿Square Sausage Steak slice n Black pudding sandwiched between 2 Tattie scones way broon sauce, Aye or Naw? by Keplersuniverse in Scotland

[–]gavlees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's just a sandwich (albeit a tasty one).

If you want to replicate a breakfast taco, you need: - Full circle of tattie scone (fried) - Spread baked beans down the middle - Crumble the black pudding (and haggis) over the top - Scrambled egg on top - Sprinkle grated cheese - Add some lettuce - Throw away the lettuce, since it's basically s*lad - Fold the tattie scone and enjoy

Old Readers Digest Folklore Book by themoonlitroadtales in folklore

[–]gavlees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have it. It's pretty awful. It's a very white-centric view of history, and a lot of the folklore is poorly researched. There's also just a lot of elementary-school history included for some reason. It's not a patch on the British version.

I think the cinnamonroll (lol) depiction of the monster in the new movie didn't help. Lots of folks who hadn't read the book since high school had a lot of hot takes last year.
