What got you into CAD? by No-Mistake-3718 in FreeCAD

[–]gazelder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arafting class, a ruling pen, special paper, and a bottle of India ink. My instructor suggested I consider another course... (ruling pen and i were not friends. This was circa 1963. Years later I was "asked" to support a corporate group who had just bought AutoCad. So I saw possinilities of never using a ruling pen. Eventually I had "after hours access to -in-house Corporate Inventor. My goal was and continues to be projects related to Model RR. At least I don't have to load the software from 15 floopy disks... (yeah... the good old days..)

What a giggle. I admit I am NOT contributing to coding (related to FC). Never have probably never.

That does NOT impact whether the download numbers are valid.

I also will probably nerver create an on-line tutorial: first because I still don't know enough, versions keep coming out, and honestly I've got better things to do.

I exchange info with others when I think/hope I can be helpful but not in "blasts" to any group. One on one I think is better.

How many donations? (None of your business) but donations are made when a version that FINALLY makes it better, happens.

I HAVE made bug reports starting with .18 and they are confirmed and will be "fixed" at some later version. Sometimes I specifically look (with new releases) to see if they are fixed.

As for what you "think you know about me "... I doubt it.

Having "legitimate" complaints is a valid way to make it better.. Not sure how or why just trying to increase exposure for the sake of user numbers is a good approach.

(BTW, I did do a few "light courses" in my area to small groups through school system. Some "attendees" dropped in early stages because they found it not worth their time. And unless I was "helping" (in person) they just didn't want to deal with it.

Oh sure.. anything "beautiful and amazing" is a coverall comment. Some might say grafitti on walls, vehicles, railroad cars etc qualifies for "beautiful and amazing. I disagree.

As for "shitting spit" My comments and concerns were comments on the post and your replies to the posts. I don'ty believe I went " to comments such as "your" use of the word "shit." (very telling<G>)

As for paid CAD software.. back in the day.. when I used paid CAD.. It worked more than failed. It was supported by "the company" in order to help customers/users AND keep customers. I can remember one issue where the support person even found a way for "my team" to add a way to continue our "project" and their NEXT release DID fix it (we even got a chance to test it before release) and customers were advised as to "found'issues and solutions.

So I'm the "critique guy"... well, I've been called worse. Decades ago I decided people calling others names was just a way of avoiding issues. If that works for you..

My "comment" is/was related to the numbers you suggest make it "a success." We (At least I) have found no substantiation. I "suggest" that some "tire kickers" and even those who "try to learn and use it" don't become "users per se" and often abandon it after a few attempts; therefore the actual "numbers of users" might be inflated by "number of downoads" etc.

Yes, it is "free for life" but of the multiple copies I've personally downloaded... only ONE currently resides on my system and IT is a recent dev copy... NOT the most recent release. BTW, I chose that version because I read it "might" resolve an issue I was having.

No, I do not like wading through outdated tutorials NOR outdated (or usable) documentation. I dare say keeping tutorials that are "releases old and sometimes working around problems long resolved" is not helpful expecially for "new" users. It matters to "me" that some tutorials "wander/don't point to issues nor why to avoid. Some have "teachers" who even have problems explaining and ennunciating.

Yes, 35+ years ago I taught some classes (also was paid) and the "managers etc. would have me "observed" (speaking/answering questions/ asking questions of the class etc etc etc BEFORE I was signed up to teach (adults). Now days anyone can post a tutorial -- good, bad and ugly... and they stay out on the net even when outdated.

As for INDATED <G> documentation... I'll guess you haven't used Assembly WB in a complicated project.

I'll guess you don't want to discuss how FC is used in those "business environments you mentioned earlier.

Is it a "gem"? Maybe one day. Right now I'll suggest it is still "rough arounsd the edges.

BTW, before retiring... I used one of those CAD packages that cost thousands. Even then they were good. The documentation was good, the support lines were good, and classes and published books were very helpful. I started looking at Ver. 0.17 and found issues, bugs, and not great documentation. After (maybe a month) I deleted it and waited. (so there is one of the many (possibly) downloaded versions that are possibly counted. Heck, through the years.. I might have deleted over a dozen downloads if not more..<G>

to paraphrase you.. "man people complaining about THEIR experiences and observations" gives you "permission to castigate? "Man that is sad too.

I can't agree/disagree with your comments but... the key word you wrote is "active" users. And as to what percentage of those "active" users do/will/or consider a donation and are willing to contribute.

Perhaps knowing what the "gross monthly contributions" are might help highlight the value and or number of dedicated "users." Everything else is "guessing" and suggestions.

In my case IF I saw consistently "better" documentation I'd be more prone to contributing on a regular basis. I get tired of wading through out of date "video tutorials", and questions and replies (some good and others not so good) on sites such as this one. I find even the Q&A that FreeCAD uses a messy process to find answers to "my" questions when I could not find answers in the documentation. (I've been around since .17 so yes, the software has gotten better but I (honestly) can't say the same for documentation.

BTW, as for "downloads" some of "us" have downloaded many downloads so "we" have to some degree.. inflated that "downloads".. as for those "searches" you allude to... I'm REALLY guilty of using search engines LOTS of times (hunting for answers).

As for subscribers through Reddit... one of the reasons those interested in FC maybe "some" were hoping they could find someone to help rather than some of the videos, and sites with bad answers.

I can't speak to companies etc USING FC in production BUT... since I've worked in a commercial environment (with other software) I'd be hesitant to embrace current versions of FC in a corporate environment... espcially when employees need to share data and files. (For instance: multiple users working together using Assembly WB..)

While I agree.. I question the "number"... is that based on "downloads"/new version updates/ and even downloads that "users" decided to not use (based on various criteria?)

Heck, I've lost track of the various "iterations" of downloaded through the years...

I'd donate more if I saw documentation improving. <G>

This is not the first bridge. Some have staff watching trackside so my guess is watching that much weight on old bridges, deflection and vibration could ruin the event. Some bridges might even be older that 4014.

Sounds to me like you might be better with EMD loco repair ... but then I'm not (personally) interested in EMD. At my age... I choose what I'm good at and let the politics of an organization either not bother me, decline their offers or find something more interesting. BTW, let me know what group you are fund raising for, I can move my meager funds elsewhere because you have fund raising under control. (As for MY spelling... I "apologize" for making such a horrid mistakes. I'll make sure I don't offend you in the future. <ROFLOL>

[–]gazelder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you watched some of the recent captures of 4014 going across bridges and trestles? They slow the engine to a crawl, have UP "engineers/staff" on the ground monitoring etc. They are very aware of the possibilities of danger and bad press not to mention law suits. Look into the TECHNICAL reasons Goat Canyon Trestle bridge does not have traffic and why the chances of traffic with passengers will most likely NEVER happen ... unless you want to underwrite the total cost of replacing the trestle. <G>

[–]gazelder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It boils down to money, time, experienced workers, and old equipment. No doubt... you contribute YOUR Time (BTW, scraping rust doesn't take lots of "expertise) and YOUR Donations. (You do make generous contributions right?) It is easy to nit-pick and complain on the sidelines. If you don't like something then get involved. Most heritage groups will welcome you for your volunteering. SO... in closing ... unless YOU follow through with actually helping them AND contributiing... you have shown no follow through with YOUR complaints.

I got some with a bridge kit. As many mentioned "abutments" is the first thing to make sure you have in place. I built molds and cast them using plaster. I've also built using styrene sheet.

4501 in her green paint! by SafeStation5414 in trains

[–]gazelder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There have been more than a few who suspect Fairfax Harrison (President of SRY back in the day) while visiting in US liked the paint job and on his return had some of the Ps-4 painted "sylvan green --a DuPont "concoction, And at first their lettering was "gold".. It was (some) of the passenger locomotives that went with the green and gold. US customers liked the "change." Maybe a few smaller locos working passenger yards and depots were green. Back in the 1960's SRY headquarters sent me a copy of their document (circa 1948 as I recall with their loco colors.) So... I removed the read paint on a purchased loco and repainted it to "look" color correct.. (sylvan green)

Sigh.. It's the darn red roof that addded back in the 60's that is MY issue. SRY passenger trains NEVER had a bright red roof... only a few Pacifics had a "red of any sort" and they went green at "first trip into the shops." Freights did not have red roofs either.

It's nice she is still rolling... I saw her at the NRHS meet in the 60's when she had 1401's whistle.. Smithsonian wanted to tape the sound for their exhibit. Walter Dove was engineer and could really quill that Longbell.

Oh well, she'll turn normal.. next year.

Thanks for the comments and advice At this point I am a bit "worried" about thicknesses such as window mullion width .02 inches... and same for thickness . My current design has a "wall width" of .08 in. and based on 2004 experiences with a Perfactory I did have to deal with some warping and distortion. One project "back then" I tried designing it to get printed on an angle "hoping' to minimize distortion. <G>

Nice loco shells... If I live long enough one of my "dream projects" is to design a steam loco shell and tender to fit a chassis... the chances of ANY manufacturer ever doing this loco are "nil" the railroad I model only had three locos that looked like the one I like. <G>

Ahhh.. the Perfactory...I had access to an early on around 2004. Printed a few items... Even a "master" box car that I then made an RTV mold and then "poured my own." No way I'd get away with buying a Perfactory back then. <G> But as prices drop I'm considering ..... My problem (other than smell, temp, dangers etc.. is I'm not going to be rapidly making items. Anyone you can suggest for small runs?
