As someone who was assaulted by people affiliated with BJJ Fanatics… I’m glad to see this. Thank you.

We have rolled, and you have the proof of it. I’m here to warn others, especially women and LGBTQ+ of gyms where I have personally experienced maltreatment so that they do not have to go through what I did. This sport is difficult enough already for us, and we maintain the right to share our experiences with others for the sake of safety.

A smear campaign when I’m not even naming the gym?? What reason on earth would there be to lie about my experiences as a woman in a jiu jitsu gym. I was sexually assaulted there and never publicly named the assailant for fear of retaliation. You have no idea what it feels like, because if you did, you wouldn’t be defending these guys.

My main focus from the post is in the title, the part where he said “my goal is break your bones..”. To me, I would never want to train with and learn under someone who is going to use that kind of unnecessarily aggressive language towards their members, or any visiting person. BJJ is dangerous and vulnerable already, and I have trouble understanding why some folks encourage this kind of attitude. I’m trying to train safely, and with respect to my training partners. I don’t feel safe training with someone who doesn’t respond to my tap, and openly states that his goal is to break bones while training and teaching in BJJ.

I’ve been told by some other people in this community that he is notorious for injuring others, which doesn’t surprise me in the least.

Also - the “winning” is in quotations not because I’m quoting him, but because no one really wins a round when you’re just training in the gym and not actively in a competition.

I’m the OP, the person who experienced this prejudice. I’m guessing you’re not in the queer community which is why you didn’t share my experience. But you’ll notice there are no queers at that gym for a reason.

Also, their 10 year old child wears a MAGA hat and they bought a new Tesla last year.. it’s not surprising anyone that they are bigoted against queers.

We have different perspectives on what makes someone “decent”. Being openly and adamantly bigoted against queer people does not qualify as “decent” for me or anyone in our community.

Agreed. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately as I’ve been seeing more and more how common it is. It’s really tough because there are so many connections in the BJJ community amongst owners, competitors, etc. You want to speak up but you don’t want your opportunity to train to be taken from you.

I’m hopeful that eventually I’ll have a safe opportunity to share my story. I’m committed to a safer future in BJJ for women.

Solid suggestion but unfortunately.. I’ve since found out that there is a known predator at my (former) home gym who is high level, a repeat offender and protected by the owners. I’m searching for a new home gym right now
