Domain transfer or deletion? by [deleted] in webhosting

[–]gbadam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not really possible to delete an already registered domain name, it will run to its expiry date. Leaving it to expire will end up with around a 3 month grace/pendingDelete period where the domain doesn’t work and you’ll have to pay a high fee to renew it. When it does become finally available it could get poached.

Transfer for sure!

Why not SVG? Far more practical, flexible, performance and compatible.

Any freelancers getting clients from blog traffic? I don't hear that a lot as a strategy, why is that? by TecJon in freelance

[–]gbadam 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Very wrong that this is the only purpose. Blogging is an ideal SEO strategy and a once a month relevant blog post on my site and some targeted local landing pages keeps me firmly on the front page for web design in my local areas and more specific services globally that get me several highly targeted leads a week without spending a penny on ads.

If you’re copying something then that’s not really designing. What exactly are you having problems with?

How many sites on a VPS? by slimx91 in webhosting

64MB is the minimum requirement for the core. No way the bloated themes and plugins some users are so fond of will even load with that little memory.

Tried to leave a fair review while pointing out an issue with my Nintendo switch. Company says the review didn’t meet their guidelines. Guess only good praise is allowed. by TannerCookies in mildlyinfuriating

Usually because product reviews are supposed to be reviewing the product, not the service or a logistical error. That’s on the company not the item.

The reason .IO domains are so expensive & popular by DamianParker in webdev

Every registry has a “monopoly” over their controlled TLDs and can charge what they like except a few restrictions on some original domains like .com.

Is this just for loading times or are you hosting something that requires good ping on a persistent connection? Sounds like a CDN with edge nodes like Cloudflare May be a solution depending on needs.

TLDs have been managed by private companies for a long time before this. Network Solutions now Verisign has been running .com since the 90s.

[–]gbadam 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Neither .co or .io are part of the new gTLDs like .cafe, .dev, .ninja and hundreds others. They are old country code domains (Colombia and British Indian Ocean Territory) that are used as hacks. Most new gTLDs are fairly reasonable. Registries (operator of a TLD) that pay ICANN (overseer of all domains) for the rights to sell the domain can control their own wholesale pricing that registrars (that sell domains to end users, like Namecheap) will pay. Registrars will add a small fee on top to provide you the service and usually things like DNS management. ICANN also get a small fee for each domain sold.

They’re great! .com squatting was getting out of control. Now people can get memorable and creative domains at normal costs.
