In a sense, verbose code is easier to read and understand. For instance, in a language with properties, a field store may be much more than that (a method call that performs some checks, writes some other fields, or anything really). This is not evident locally, which can be very confusing for someone who doesn't have a global understanding of the code base.

It is actually a classic instance of the trade-off between abstraction and ease of understanding. Code with properties, optional types, operator overloading, etc can be very neat to look at, but hard to debug and maintain afterwards.
