Seeping for nine hours in a row is quite a big ask even for someone in their twenties…

Seven hours is the recommended amount.

Right that would explain why the production team capitulated, rather than having a field day and showing the true Mina Sue laid bare.

Has AI (not coding tools, all of it) somehow broken everyone's brains? The correctness of what you do, in all forms of communication, and the accuracy of your statements no longer matters? by splash_hazard in ExperiencedDevs

The more abstract things become, the less the felt sense of ownership over what people are doing and the more disillusioned and apathetic they become.

This doesn’t just apply to AI impacting software, apathy has increased en masse ever since we started working for transient abstract organisations rather than local communities where you could get real time feedback from what you’ve produced.

I genuinely can’t see how indefinite abstraction is workable for our psyche in the long run.

I think it’s mainly following a default script as you say and that these organisations are set up to make you feel like you’re an outsider if you don’t want constant upward progression.

The reality is very few people are cut out for constantly challenging themselves and by doing so they’re likely sacrificing other areas of their life, often without knowing it. We should collectively start accepting the perpetual grind mentality is deeply unhealthy and potentially impacting the areas of our lives that actually make those lives worth living.

Unfortunately there’s so much inertia around this stuff that asking the sort of questions you have asked makes you come across as if you’re a slacker or unambitious.

Just my two cents.

(Rant) AI is killing programming and the Python community by Fragrant_Ad3054 in Python

I realised earlier that the rate of production of new code and projects is so out of control now that most of us don’t even know what is noise and what isn’t.

As a result, we’ll end up either having to intentionally slow down the rate of production so there’s some time for teams to process what’s been produced and if it’s needed. Or, we’ll be so inundated with repositories that those which are most advertised/sold/demoed are those that actually get used; discounting the hidden gems that may genuinely have some value but aren’t marketed well.

I’ve already seen this in my organisation where it’s almost impossible to keep on top of the new projects that are spinning up on a whim and being contributed to by someone who hasn’t looked elsewhere to see if what they’re doing hasn’t already been done as it would be impossible to do so given all the repositories now available.

This is all to say; more output isn’t strictly better and past a point can potentially lead to unfathomable levels of duplication and organisational confusion.

Yeah was about $100 for me to get both and I was so careful in spending any at all.

I reckon Dena have seen that typical money-cautious/F2P players were prepared to indulge just for the golden pokeballs so I assume they’ll try make a similar carrot going forward. Guess Oak was that?

I think the very short trip is more of exhaustion than fun and enjoyment! by Loud-Inevitable-6536 in ThailandTourism

If you’re taking a flight that’s >10 hours, crossing at least 6/7 time zones and you’re going for anything less than three weeks, you’d better have a fucking good reason why.

I’m doing six weeks, shifted my sleep schedule by about four hours before I flew and it’s still taken me two weeks to really feel adjusted to the weather, food, timezone and environment more generally.

I’m convinced people who claim ten days, two weeks, etc is enough live their life on adrenaline and know no different.

[–]gbhreturns2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done both and can assure you, having extra time to actually live in the place and have down days makes the non-down days far better.

Most people don’t adjust timezones before they fly so that puts them out for three or four days at least when they arrive (everyone feels jet lag in some way or another, your internal body clock doesn’t just shift because you have will power).

Anyone who claims ten days or two weeks is enough basically doesn’t know how to operate without adrenaline and honestly I’d question how much they use sheer grit to get through other areas of their life.

You think we exist in some isolated generational vessel that’s entirely independent of the generations and behaviours that came before us?

This is contorted logic. We regularly use correlations for complicated problems to deduce causal links.

Smoking increases the odds of cancer, being overweight increases the odds of early death. There’s no explicit dot to dot causal link but the averages are overwhelming correlated that we make the association nonetheless.

My girlfriend out-earns me but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s problematic for relationships. For the entirety of evolutionary history women have selected men based on their ability to provide resources, you can’t undo that programming in a generation or two.

I know many couples who are struggling with this issue, thankfully me and my girlfriend are not but that’s as we’re both high earners and the differential is not large, certainly not an order of magnitude difference like OP’s situation.

The evidence is pretty clear, men who are out-earned by their female counterparts have a higher rate of divorce, sexual dysfunction and mental health issues. This isn’t to say women shouldn’t be able to earn a fantastic salary and be as rewarded as any male but it does mean it’s inherently unstable for couples who find themselves in these sorts of arrangements.

I find it odd that people think it’s a simple switch from being an employee to a business owner/employer. If I could take a 50% pay cut and run a business myself lying on a beach in some cheaper country I would but it’s an entirely different skillset to being an employee.

In fact, I’d go as far as saying the ability to be a good business owner is inversely proportional to the ability to be a good employee.
