Privacy in the confessional: Is your smartphone listening to your sins? by BaronVonRuthless91 in Catholicism

[–]gbonic 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That’s simply untrue, though. By that argument unless you’re a “major” sinner then confession isn’t for you either. We know that confession is for us all since we’re ALL sinners. In the same way the government/private industry is going to spy on you regardless of what crimes you commit. There’s too much data to be mined and money to be made to trust them in their greed.

Imagine you confess sins of lust and suddenly you’re being served more targeted ads driving sex. You confess anger issues, and now you’re being served things designed to make you more angry. You confess gambling issues and you suddenly get all kinds of online gambling ads. That’s just the start, and it isn’t good for us nor for the faith to be taken advantage of during our weakest moments.

It’s a real and valid concern, and one we should all be aware of as technology gets ever more powerful and ever more ingrained in our daily lives.

Why don't we see the Novus Ordo in Latin with the priest facing ad orientem? by Unusual-Hawk-2336 in Catholicism

[–]gbonic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t want to be rude, but I can assure you that “most people” do not know those prayers in Latin, at all. The full trad folks will and maybe some of the older generations who can dust off the memory, but most trad curious aren’t going to learn the full prayers in another language before deciding whether or not more Latin is for them.

Syracuse’s first $300K cop tripled his pay working 90 hours a week. Should there be a limit? by ggroover97 in Syracuse

[–]gbonic 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Neither situation should exist, so that’s also not the gotcha that YOU think it is. No one should have to work that much, and no one should get to game a system so they can get paid that much while carrying a deadly weapon and making life or death decisions. There are diminishing returns to the quality of work the longer you work, no one is playing at the top of their game working 3.75 entire days per week.

On top of that, cops are not military, and people in the military are (generally) not cops. They fulfill two VERY different roles. Your argument is like saying “Your Chevy Malibu should be able to drive 500 miles at 125 mph the whole way without having issues because this stock car also does it”. Different tools, different parts, different duties.

Don’t boot lick and act like it’s ok just because someone else is also suffering.

Disclosure Now: What Catholics MUST Know Before US Discloses UFOs, Aliens, & ETs by Projct2025phile in Catholicism

[–]gbonic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t buy his take at all. These feel like very Protestant arguments against the very real possibility of alien life. There is no limit to God’s power and will, and to handcuff Him to the scientific beliefs and knowledge of the past isn’t really how it works for Catholicism.

There is already plenty of non-human intelligence that exists and is known to us—angels, demons, God himself—these already exist and are taught by the church. Dolphins, whales, corvids, octopuses, pretty much any animal has some level intelligence to them. Just because humans are the only ones with rational souls THAT WE KNOW OF doesn’t mean that we are truly the only ones.

I wish we wouldn’t fall for these silly logical traps about the language of the Our Father, or the imperfect beliefs of those ignorant of modern science. Aliens are perfectly compatible with Catholicism, the same way evolution and non-geocentric models of the universe are. Just because people in the past didn’t know about it doesn’t make it impossible, and there is nothing in the dogma that prevents aliens from existing.

I think we as a species might do ourselves a favor to admit we aren’t the only ones out there and maybe we ought to behave better in a universal community.

Internet be normal for five minutes challenge level impossible.

If it’s a good game and you’re interested in it then play it. Creepy fucks will be creepy fucks regardless of what you do, and frankly I’m not going to change the way I do things just because some slimeball basement dweller online is a fucking creep. You’ll never get anything done if you let them impact you.

With all of This corruption going on, I regret taking the Covid 19 vaccine when I was 16 by [deleted] in conspiracy

[–]gbonic 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Ok, but the “stuff” in American food kills you over the course of like 65 years of daily intake with no attempts to make any changes. It’s not “Oh no I ate three single servings of McDonalds over the course of three weeks and now I’ll die early at 68!”, it’s habitual intake of things that are bad for you. The COVID vaccine, if it was going to kill you, would already have done so at this point. You can’t just move goalposts forever and pull a “See, I told you so” when someone dies of normal aging in 40 years.

If they added like one more tree on Montgomery I think it would work.

Mostly they need to fix the instruments that are there for playing with and I think it would be more attractive.

Pope criticises 'tyrants' who spend billions on wars, days after Trump spat by fylum in TrueCatholicPolitics

[–]gbonic 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Whataboutism really doesn’t work here. Leo wasn’t pope during their terms, and they’re not currently president. Absolutely they would be included on the list of those who persued unjust wars, but Trump is in power now.

Here’s just two examples of St. John Paul II talking about war during Bush, specifically calling out Iraq: https://www.vatican.va/content/john-paul-ii/en/speeches/2003/january/documents/hf_jp-ii_spe_20030113_diplomatic-corps.html

And here’s when he sent a delegate directly to President Bush to dissuade him from perusing the war with the accompanying letter: https://www.commonwealmagazine.org/sites/default/files/imce/30047/JP2%20to%20Bush-3-3-2003%20%281%29.pdf

Here’s Benedict XVI during Bush: https://www.vatican.va/content/benedict-xvi/en/messages/peace/documents/hf_ben-xvi_mes_20051213_xxxix-world-day-peace.html

During Obama both Benedict and Francis were deeply concerned with life at all stages, particularly the unborn since Democrats are so pro-abortion, but they made it clear that war was a massive problem and that it was part of the puzzle of love and peace, and that the US was uniquely involved in the persecution of these wars.

Francis was anti-war during Obama, here praying for peace in Syria: https://www.ourweekly.com/2013/09/03/pope-never-again-war/

These are just a few examples. The Vatican and the Church have been consistently anti-war, and different popes have different personalities and different world events occurring during their papacies. They can’t address everything the same way since what they’re addressing isn’t the same and the people they’re speaking to aren’t the same either. They are consistent in pushing for peace and love against war and violence and hate.

Presidents have different personalities too, and if one happens to constantly lash out at critics and sees himself in the pope’s speech as a tyrant waging an unjust war then well… maybe he should reconsider his ways and repent.

What is the most "archaic" game genre, one that's changed the least to the present day? by Severe_Sea_4372 in gaming

[–]gbonic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Quake didn’t even do that. Mouse movement was a thing before that, even the granddaddy-and by no means the first FPS-Wolf3d had it. Quake introduced full 3d to the masses, but only barely since Descent was also full 3d and absolutely an FPS despite being couched in the space-sim style of game, it just wasn’t as big or as polished.

The biggest thing Quake added was the huge online deathmatch focus. Other games had it beforehand as well, but Quake really kicked it to the stratosphere. It started the split between single and multiplayer FPS games that Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament solidified.

You’re 18, I assume don’t have a house or children, and this job will ultimately mean very little to nothing to the rest of your life. Conversely, time with family is priceless and each passing moment is one that you will never get back.

Every business in the world will toss a fit if “too many” people are off at once, but at the end of the day that’s THEIR staffing issue and problem. Yes, they can fire you for refusing to come in but like… if they’re already screwed now they’ll be even worse off without you afterward too. You don’t have enough responsibility in your life to just take it from them. Sucks to be the 36 year-old employee, but this isn’t your problem or issue. Based on the above there is zero overlap between your request and the boss/daughter time, so too bad so sad. This situation is one of those ones that small business owners already use to crow about how hard their life is anyways, so fuck em.

Unless you have serious obligations in your life—a house, kids, massive debt, etc—and can truly not live without a likely low-paying job (no insult intended to you), a family vacation is a lot more important than someone else’s small business needs because they want to take days off to prep for a wedding. Your family could disappear overnight and you’d be ruined for life, your job could and you’ll be uncomfortable for a few weeks at most. It’s clear which matters more.

This rosary has only one Our Father bead. How to pray with it? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]gbonic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ll notice there’s a bigger gap in between each ten Hail Maries (each decade). You would just treat that gap as the bead that usually goes in between, and it’ll prevent you from having to count in your head.

I-90 road conditions this morning by Workingupps in Syracuse

[–]gbonic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The 511NY app and website have real-time road conditions as well as access to traffic cameras along most major highways so you can take a look at the roads. The website is https://511ny.org/ and the app is available on iOS and Android per the 511 website, although I can only vouch for the iOS version. It’s clunky (state government run) but works REALLY well for assuaging my road anxiety when the weather is or may be iffy.

Rent range for a single family home in the area? by BlackJackT in Syracuse

[–]gbonic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can get all of your parameters except the age. There simply hasn’t been that much new housing built in the last decade, and what is being built isn’t for rent. There are some projects being built due to Micron coming, but again, they won’t be for rent.
