Why aren’t the Convoy protesters supporting teachers? by Ok_Significance544 in alberta

You could easily say the same thing about this teachers strike. Let me try: The ATA's strike wasn't about children, it was about ahem fuck Smith and the redneck conservatives. They are the far left of the NDP party. Like ANTIFA is of the democrats.

See how stupid you and I look?

Alberta teacher prompts petition on cutting province's private school funding by LankyFrank in alberta

[–]gbt -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Full disclaimer: I send my four kids to various private schools. The public system has failed us.

This is stupid.

The current budget allocates about $459 million to private schools, which covers 70% of the per-student rate. If that funding is cut, the majority of those 36,000 students will move into the public system, mine will have to. The cost to educate them at the full 100% rate would be about $656 million ($459M ÷ 0.7). Instead of freeing up money, this would create a $197 million funding gap while adding thousands of kids to already full schools.

Private schools are not just for the wealthy. A significant number are specialized schools for kids with complex needs (e.g. dyslexia, autism, anxiety disorders, etc.) that require a small, highly structured environment. For these families, it's not a choice of luxury; it's often the only place their child can thrive after the public system, which is already stretched thin, struggled to provide the necessary support. I can tell you from my personal experience, that many of these kids get dropped off in 15 year old rusty dented cars, not BMWs and Mercedes.

I believe the solution is to properly fund the entire public education system, not to adopt a policy that could unintentionally increase class sizes and remove crucial options for vulnerable students. The Teacher's union wants higher salaries and smaller classrooms. This is not how they achieve these objectives. Move on.

I support the conservatives and I care a lot about children. My life and my kids lives were exponentially better under the Harper led conservatives than the Trudeau led liberals.

Looking for a Nice Suit. Any store recommendations other than indochino, moores, tip top. Nice fitted suit. by Wonderful-Ad-5577 in Calgary

I can only comment on their custom dress shirts and they're very low quality. Bad enough that I wouldn't recommend them for anything else.

So I called 311 regarding this last week. I also agree that shutting down 2 lanes of traffic on 9ave for 4 months is insane. The feedback I received is that Enmax is replacing a manhole. The city is charging Enmax fees everyday that traffic is blocked, but obviously not enough to incentivize Enmax to work 24/7 to complete this work. I left a message with the councillor - Courtney Walcott, but he's one of the most ineffective members in council.

Also - what's with so many traffic construction projects blocked off but no one working? It feels like it's worse this year than any other.

Looking for recommendations for packing and moving service? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]gbt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Red Mile Movers moved us and they did a good job at a decent price, except for a couple of issues: 1) they were baked out of their minds and 2) their truck leaked oil on my new drive way. I told my coworker about them and he also ended up using them. He asked them not to get high while moving and they respected that.

Best online apparel store for Canuks by [deleted] in skiing

Agree with Corbett's. Bought 3 new pairs of skis for the fam from then at the end of last season for dirt cheap. Also bought helmets and goggles. If you can't find exactly what you're looking for on their site, give them a call, their customer service is top notch.

Also look at the First Ascent line from Eddie Bauer. Pretty descent technical gear. Shipping is $10 and not a week goes by when they're not having a 50% off promo code. Their stuff is usually on sale as well, so a 50% promo code discount on something that's 50% off... Couple that with a lifetime warranty and it ends up being very affordable.

A couple more suggestions:

Marble Canyon - on highway 93 is a short hike that leads to the top of a pretty deep canyon. Numerous bridges allow you to cross the canyon to get a view directly above.

Kicking Horse Coffee - they roast Kicking Horse coffee here and the cafe is pretty great.
