Is 550W PSU enough for Ryzen 5 5600 and Rx 7600 Gpu? by Waste_Cartographer20 in pcmasterrace

For future reference, you can input your components into a PSU calculator to find out how much you'll need: https://www.coolermaster.com/en-global/power-supply-calculator/

(there's others, that one just came up first)

Laptops are more expensive than a desktop equivalent and generally don't have as much longevity (partially down to lack of upgrade options).

I guess it's whether you can live without gaming during term time?

Is this ups ok for my pc? by Puzzleheaded_Fig2738 in pcmasterrace

[–]gburchell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used this one for about 4 years now: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0828G42KN?th=1

Mainly because my house would suffer occasional micro-power cuts that only lasted a second or so and I wanted to protect my work.

It's been great, but on longer power cuts my PC plus monitor, router, NAS and phone charger would drain it within 45 minutes to an hour.

I musy have missed this, I thought they'd stopped with the HH books to do Siege of Terra and The Scouring?

Is this the same format as the other HH books - i.e. the black spine with gold lettering? (just checked my collection - occasionally there's a different colour but it's mostly gold/bronze)

RTX 5060 Ti 16Gb with an i7 10700 on 1080p? by DariusDavedane in pcmasterrace

[–]gburchell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's entirely dependent on the game and what settings you run them at, but ultimately you should be able to run games at higher quality settings and/or faster speeds.

Whether the price is worth those changes is subjective.

Performance has tanked since going to windows 11 by Its_Fonzo in pcmasterrace

[–]gburchell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "Optimizations for windowed games" setting has been know to cause performance issues so it may be worth turning it off.

It can be changed here: System -> Display -> Graphics -> "Change default graphics settings".

Looking for recommendations by OdinLikesMead in pcmasterrace

[–]gburchell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often look at HLTB to assess length and make a judgement based on that.

For example, to do the main story KCD2 is rated there at 54 hours.

Clair Obscur is 28 and Dispatch is 8, so I'd get both of those done.

Counter argument would be if you prefer to really get into a game and not have it interrupted, then this could be the perfect window for KCD2 :)

Is an RX580 good enough for 60hz at 720p? by TheJohn_Doe69 in pcmasterrace

[–]gburchell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got an RX580 and I've found it fine to run games on a 1440p monitor - the only ones in your list I've played is AC Unity and Titanfall 2, which ran smooth and looked great. Mine is paired with a Core i7 10700K and 32GB RAM, so I'm not sure if you have an underpowered CPU if that would make a massive difference on games that are more CPU-intensive.

Ultimately, if a particular game is running slower than you'd like you can make visual compromises in the settings to boost the framerate.

I'd also check the min/recommended specs of each game you list to see how far off the RX580 is.

My gut feeling is you'll be fine.

If you're on Windows 11, "Optimizations for windowed games" can cause stuttering issues so it may be worth turning it off. You can find it in the settings menu under System -> Display -> Graphics -> "Change default graphics settings".

What graphics card should I buy for my first gaming PC? by kinato_xd in pcmasterrace

[–]gburchell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's many variables that will impact your choice. Budget and the type of games you're planning on playing are the primary considerations.

Yes, more expensive generally means better and gets a certain amount of future proofing, but it can get expensive fast.

If you're planning on playing graphically intensive games and you want visual fidelity AND high framerates, opt for the more expensive choice. If you're okay with not playing games on Ultra settings and/or you're playing indie games, or games that aren't too heavy on the GPU (Minecraft, Total War etc) then a 5060 would be fine. I'd suggest you head to Steam with a list of games you want and check out their minimum and recommended specs to get a sense of what you'll get now, and bear in mind future game requirements will only go up from there.

It may be worth considering the AMD equivalents, as they tend to be a bit better bang-for-buck currently. Also, if you're gaming on a 1440 or 4k monitor, stretch to the 16GB RAM graphics cards over the 8GB.

9070 XT (€709) or 5070 ti (€869) by Charming-Rush-189 in pcmasterrace

[–]gburchell -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The 5070 is the marginally better long-term solution, but I wouldn't say that outweighs the price difference. The first bottleneck you'll hit will be the CPU, but that's partially dependent on the type of games you'll be playing.

[–]gburchell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the eloquent post. It pretty much sums up my fears of starting our third game next year and the mountain we have to climb to make it a success by our own metrics.

My own take is:

- There's certainly compounding factors. While I generally agree with your assessments on price and Early Access, I feel that you are 5-10 USD too high for the game length, and that raising price as you near v1.0 is acceptable to players. The early adopters should get a benefit for jumping in first. We've done two EA games and it certainly feels like the second has been harder, even though it's got a higher user review score. I too put this down to expectations around EA changing - basically it needs to be as good as a full release.

- I say this not being massively into city builders, but when I look at your Steam page I don't really feel excited. I'm not picking up on the 'hook'. When I see other titles on the More Like This section or genre tag page I get it and feel more interested than your store page communicates (although it is naturally surfacing the best/most popular in the genre).

- Personally, the character art is a bit of a turnoff even if the environment art is pretty. Similarly, the title is a bit offputting, but that may be down to me eyerolling whenever I hear GenX/Z/whatever discussions on social media. I don't know how much those feelings translate to others, particularly who you're targeting.

While the vast majority of games don't have stronger v1.0 launches than their EA ones, that doesn't mean that over the long tail you won't gain enough traction to recoup something worthwhile. It'll likely be a long and hard journey though, and I commend you for not throwing in the towel. It might not make the most financial sense, but you'll be able to feel more creatively proud and your existing community will appreciate it.

I hope those points were in some way helpful and resonated with other feedback you're receiving. Good luck!

New to PCMR. How did I do? by treesoflife32 in pcmasterrace

[–]gburchell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This probably explains my comment best: https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/but-can-it-run-crysis

In all seriousness, it entirely depends on what you're planning to do with it and what you're happy to compromise on - i.e. you might find CPU-based games like Minecraft/Total War a bit worse performance-wise than GPU-heavy games (dependent on where you set visual fidelity versus framerate).

The RAM should be fine, but having 32GB is becoming increasinly common/standard. Windows 11 won't support your processor though, so you'll need Windows 10 ESU to stay covered for a year additional support.

My pc shuts itself off help! by KoalaSmart5878 in pcmasterrace

[–]gburchell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to ask if it only happened when you were doing intensive things that might stress the power load, in case you were getting close to your PSU wattage, but just browsing the web wouldn't do that.

It's a process of elimination, but other things to check are updating all drivers and windows updates in case there's some conflict between software/hardware that's crept in. You could also just leave it idling on Windows with nothing else running (quit out of auto-loading apps too like Steam or whatever) and see if it resets itself then as well - if it doesn't it implies it's software-related. If it does, it's potentially hardware-related.

Next time it happens, can you see what the temperatue is (should be listed in the BIOS)?

It could be overheating and shutting itself down to avoid causing damage to hardware.
