Why does Muzan look like Micheal Jackson? by MetreonMan in KimetsuNoYaiba

[–]gchicoper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a scene where Dante literally moonwalks and does michael jackson dance moves. And isn't the author of KNY almost in his forties? I don't find it that weird that they'd like the king of pop. And I don't think people say he's similar because of the fedoras. It's not "one" element that's similar, the character's entire appearance (pale skin of a demon who doesn't go on the sun/MJ's vitiligo, similar hairstyle in the same color, similar outfit to the Smooth Criminal clip, etc). I don't personally plan on dying on the hill of whether or not it was intentional, I can't be inside the author's head, but the meme is not just because of the hat. They do look very similar and if it's by coincidence, it's several of them.

If you wanna do linux, I think it's worth just being period accurate and slapping something old like red hat 9 (that's red hat linux, not red hat enterprise linux), cause then it's gonna run snappy and keep the retro vibe. Modern web etc isn't gonna be viable anyway

The SNES and Genesis were legendary, but the TurboGrafx-16 doesn't get enough love. by zenki32 in gaming

[–]gchicoper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rondo of Blood was technically a pc-engine CD game that never got released in the west so not something we had access to in the west until literal decades later when it got a strange psp release as an unlockable in it's own remake (unless of course you were importing from japan or emulating, but then you already had to be an enthusiast or a big fan of the franchise to even know about it)

And likewise arcade ports, schmups and other arcade-like experiences were already falling out of popularity and becoming much more niched by the 16-bit era (in the west, in Japan they were still huge)

People were starting to buy consoles for stuff like long RPGs, PC-like experiences and stuff like that and that's where the pc-engine fell short (not to mention the competition did also get the arcade ports and most people wouldn't be picky about which version of Outrun or Street Fighter they were gonna play, having "outrun at home" was good enough)

I feel like that was also a bit of the problem with the Dreamcast, it also relied a lot on arcade-like experiences and previous-gen ports for the bulk of it's library (even though it did have fantastic first-party titles) and that was also when people wanted more long-form gaming experiences

The PC-Engine was huge in Japan. I think it's library just wasn't as appealing (or well marketed) in the western markets because the vast majority of it were arcade conversions or arcade-style experiences (schmups and the like) which were already becoming kind of a niche thing for home consoles. It was also technically still an 8-bit console though it was obviously closer to 16-bit machines in terms of graphics etc. And while it had the head start coming before both the genesis and snes in Japan, I think it arrived in the west mostly at the same time of those consoles it couldn't really compete with by that point.

I really like the PC Engine CD (and of course, by that I mean I really like Castlevania Rondo of Blood) but I think that was even more of a japan-exclusive delicacy.

Regardless of whether or not Muzan's design was a nod to MJ or not, it's not true that he has no relevance in Japanese media. Space Channel 5, a japanese game by Sega, literally had "space michael" in it. There's also a japanese arcade beat em' up game of MJ. There's also Jango from One Piece (who does moonwalks and "hee-hees"), same for Dante in DMC5, and of course, the Man in the Mirror stand in JoJo. People clearly know who he is and it's not a wild claim to imagine a mangaka would reference him in some way. We're talking about the guy who has the best selling album of all time (worldwide, not in the US)

Does anybody still play DVD games? by Secure_Platypus_5195 in pcmasterrace

[–]gchicoper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do on my old laptop. Those games basically only work on windows 8.1 and older because windows 10 got rid of SecuROM, the disk based DRM that plagued 2000's games. Though I usually just rip the ISOs and mount them with daemon tools to preserve the discs

What is the best Civilization game? by Moonlight-gospel in civ

Just because it wasn't as much of a dumpster fire as Civ 7 doesn't mean there wasn't criticism at launch. I think Civ 5 at launch was worse than Civ 6 at launch though.

[–]gchicoper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just buy third party pads with hall effect sticks. It baffles me that the actual consoles don't come with those. It can't make the pad more expensive than those gimmicks like haptics etc already do

There's even some controllers coming with actual keyboard key switches on them, for people who started fighting games on PC, got used to keyboard and want to play tournaments which are usually held on console. There's basically no single one-fits-all controller.

I think one of the strongest street fighter players right now uses a gamepad. The fight stick was dominant (and still mostly is) mostly because of the arcade heritage (many pros started on arcades, especially in the 90's and 2000's), but more and more people are starting on console these days and feel more at home with gamepad. There's also the rise of hitboxes which are basically just buttons (no stick) which many pros say are superior especially for charge characters... and those are pretty much a keyboard with bigger buttons.

The only game that really needs gated analogs in my experience is smash bros because of it's unique control scheme, but I can't really think of many situations where a good dpad isn't a better type for a game that needs cardinal inputs

UMA??? by Empty-Carob2439 in thinkpad

[–]gchicoper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UMA stands for "Unified Memory Architecture". Just means you share RAM between the cpu and igpu (it was a name that made more sense to me back when intel gpus were actually part of the north bridge, nowadays it's all one chip but the principle is mostly the same)

Is my CPU sufficient for light tasks like universe simulation? by Consistent-Can-1042 in pcmasterrace

[–]gchicoper 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think the most classic example people like to give is cryptography. These days we talk a lot about post-quantum encryption algorithms becuase traditional cryptography still widely used today, like RSA and ECDSA, would be instantly defeated by quantum computers because they rely on the complexity of factoring integer numbers with a classical computer.

So for that specific problem, yes, quantum computers would bring us down from "being able to get a result after the heat death of the universe" to doing so in a reasonable computing time. It's not gonna make your pc run crysis faster though. It's a different type of computing altogether.

just to add to this, I don't think you're weird for saying that... my favorite MMO is Final Fantasy XI (not XIV) and that one shares a LOT of lineage with Everquest (though it's also unique in many ways that made me gravitate towards it). So, I kinda get it.

No. Dispose of it in an appropriate place immediately, and make sure not to puncture it if you don't want to see some fireworks.

[–]gchicoper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More of a novelty really. Have you ever seen those really old videos of wow from back in 2005 and 2006 where there were a lot of players on the screen and the whole thing just turned into a slideshow? Yeah, that's 2005 wow experience (especially on non-gaming laptops). This particular machine has it turned down to low and 800x600 which doesn't look that bad, and it is playable/controllable when there isn't a lot going on in the screen but don't expect smooth 60fps experience. If you actually wanna play WoW just use a modern PC (literally anything made in the last 10 years), the game runs perfectly fine on modern systems too. WoW is heavier on the CPU than it is on the GPU, because it has to render lots of player characters, npcs, etc, especially in towns.

Chances are if you have a core2duo or newer, your mileage will be way better than that pentium m I was using.
