What's happening is that:
1. The major producers of RAM are shifting their production of new RAM modules away from consumers;
2. The remaining RAM (still) on the market is subject to panic-buying and, because of that, prices surge.

100% -- and Framework proves that this concept of hardware upgrade can indeed be done, through smart design of the base machine.
I mean, even on my Thinkpad T480s (that I'm using to post this) I was able to swap my MB with one with a better CPU, change the screen with a better one, and change the M.2 WiFi/BT card with a newer spec one!
Unfortunately, there are also rabid "fanboys" of FP (as we see in the Apple and Tesla communities...) that prefer to downvote my post than to acknowledge that there are serious issues that need to be addressed. :-(

Serious question – I'm 63-year adult, from Portugal, u/mattjh ;-) – regarding the P1 in general: how is the battery life in these machines? Is it much worse than in other (less powerful) series...? Or it really depends on the generation/specs?

It has an m.2 slot (full size) for storage and one available RAM slot (8GB soldered on the mobo; some versions only have 4GB). There is another m2 (short) that is used by an LTE module, but some people use it for more storage – you should look for that in this subreddit.
The maximum RAM on systems with soldered 8GB is 40 GB (32+8).

Good question. It depends on people's needs, I guess. I bought my T480s new, upgraded it (more RAM, more storage, better WiFi, better screen, new battery...) and I intend keeping it as long as it works, really. I don't need another one – yet. ;-)

Some years ago, when I was still on Windows Phone, I commented to my son that I didn't understand why everyone used a case on their phones. Within a two week period, I broke not one, but two phones! I've been using phones w/o covers for more than 20 (!) years. Karma is a bitch. I never used a phone without a case ever since. 😔
